46. ḍicca. ḍit is in the nominative (prathamā) case, ca is an indeclinable word (avyaya); this sūtra has two words. From ‘alo’ntyasya’ the word antyasya is carried over (anuvṛtti).
A ḍit substitute (ādeśa), even when it consists of more than one letter (anekāl), takes the place only of the final (antya).
This sūtra is the setter-aside (bādhaka) of ‘anekāl śit sarvasya’. Even if a substitute is anekāl and also ḍit — that is, even if in the substitute the ḍakāra is receiving the it-saṁjñā — that substitute does not take the place of all, but takes the place only of the final al letter; that is, it takes the place of the final letter present in the sthānin. In this way it is established that whether a substitute is anekāl or not, if it is ḍit it will take the place of the final; while a non-ḍit anekāl substitute and a śit substitute will, according to ‘anekāl śit sarvasya’, take the place of all.
