kevale vatsale nāsti mukhyasya khalu sauhṛdam |
ato’tra vatsale tasya natarāṁ likhitāṅgatā ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
kevale vatsale nāsti mukhyasya khalu sauhṛdam |
kevale vatsalewhen the parental rasa (vātsala) stands alone, pure locative — 'in the case of pure vātsala', with nothing mixed inकेवल (शुद्ध) वात्सल्य में, जहाँ और कुछ मिला हुआ न हो
nāstithere is noनहीं रहता
mukhyasyawith a primary rasa genitive — friendship of/toward the mukhyaमुख्य रस का (उससे सम्बन्ध रखने वाला)
khaluindeed, as a settled ruleनिश्चय ही
sauhṛdamfriendship (sauhṛda, the felt kinship one rasa can have for another)सौहार्द अर्थात् मैत्री-भाव
kevale vatsale — when the parental rasa stands alone, pure; mukhyasya — with a primary rasa; sauhṛdam — friendship; khalu — indeed; nāsti — there is none.
When the parental rasa (vātsala) stands by itself, unmixed, it has no friendship with a primary rasa. That is the rule. And friendship is what lets one rasa nourish another; without it, no nourishing bond forms.
L2conclusion
ato’tra vatsale tasya natarāṁ likhitāṅgatā ||
ataḥtherefore, because of that missing friendshipइसलिए
atra vatsalehere, in the vātsala entry [of this laharī] locative — the place in the text where such helper-roles are listedयहाँ वात्सल्य के प्रसंग में (जहाँ ऐसी अंग-भूमिकाएँ गिनाई जाती हैं)
tasyaits — the primary rasa's genitive; antecedent supplied as mukhyasyaउस (मुख्य रस) का
natarāmby no means, not at all na + -tarām, an intensive 'not in the least'किंचित् भी नहीं
likhitā aṅgatāis its serving as a helper-limb written down / listed (aṅgatā = the state of being an aṅga, a subordinate rasa that feeds the predominant one)अंगता लिखी गई है
ataḥ — therefore; atra vatsale — here in the vātsala entry; tasya — its, the primary rasa's; aṅgatā — serving as a helper-limb; natarām — by no means; likhitā — is written down.
So here, in the vātsala listing, Rūpa does not record the primary rasa serving as a helper-limb. Not at all. Because pure vātsala befriends no primary rasa, no such helper-role gets written into its entry.

unneyamthe same thing must be inferred / suppliedऊहकर समझ लेना चाहिए
kevale — 'kevale' means; śuddhe — 'pure'; vatsale — in the parental rasa; tatra nāsti iti — the phrase 'there is none there'; upalakṣaṇam — is a sample mention; kutracit anyatra api — so also elsewhere; unneyam — must be inferred.
Jīva first fixes the word: 'kevale' means 'pure'. Then he reads the verse's 'there is none' as an upalakṣaṇa — a sample case, not the whole list. So we should carry the same denial over: pure vātsala's want of friendship, and hence of a primary helper-limb, holds in some other cases too, not only here.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa: a viśeṣaṇa states part of what a thing is — 'the blue lotus', where blue belongs to it; an upalakṣaṇa only points you to it — 'the house with the crow on it', where the crow is not part of the house but helps you find it. Here Rūpa names only vātsala, but that mention merely flags a wider rule, so Jīva infers the same denial applies beyond vātsala.

kevale — 'kevale' means; śuddhe — 'pure'; vātsalye — in the parental rasa; mukhyasya rasasya — of a primary rasa; aṅgatā — serving as a helper-limb; nāsti — does not occur; kintu — but rather; gauṇasya eva — only of a secondary rasa; iti arthaḥ — this is the meaning.
Viśvanātha too takes 'kevale' as 'pure'. In pure vātsalya, he says, no primary rasa steps in as a helper-limb. Only a secondary (gauṇa) rasa does. That is the sense.
mukhya vs gauṇa rasas: the mukhya (primary) rasas are the five rati-grounded moods — śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, madhura; the gauṇa (secondary) rasas are the seven that ride on a passing emotion — hāsya, adbhuta, vīra, karuṇa, raudra, bhayānaka, bībhatsa. Viśvanātha's point: pure vātsalya will take on a gauṇa rasa as its nourishing limb, but never another mukhya rasa.
