nirātapatraḥ kāntāre santataṁ mukta-pādukaḥ |
nirātapatraḥwith no parasol held over him nom., describing the boyजिसके सिर पर छाता नहीं है (ऐसा मेरा बालक)
kāntāreout in the wild forest loc., the placeघने जंगल में
santataṁthe whole time, without a breakनिरन्तर, लगातार
nirātapatraḥ — with no parasol over him; kāntāre — out in the wild forest; santataṁ — the whole time; mukta-pādukaḥ — barefoot, sandals off.
No parasol over his head, out in the wild forest, the whole time—and his sandals gone, barefoot.
The udāharaṇa opens here. It illustrates karuṇa (pathos), the secondary rasa (gauṇa), arising inside vatsala (parental love), the principal rasa (mukhya)—the placement this laharī on maitrī-vaira-sthiti is tracking (see the lead-in, 'atha vatsale karuṇasya,' now, of karuṇa within vatsala). The speaker is Śrī Vrajeśvarī, mother Yaśodā, as both included commentators state (śrī-vrajeśvarī-vacanāt).
L2example
vatsān avati vatso me hanta santapyate manaḥ
vatsān avatiis out tending the calves acc. object of avatiबछड़ों की रखवाली करता है
vatsaḥ memy own little one śleṣa: vatsa = calf and darling child—her 'calf' is tending the calvesमेरा वत्स — 'वत्स' शब्द में श्लेष, बछड़ा भी और प्यारा बालक भी
hanta—oh!—a cry of griefहाय!
santapyate manaḥmy heart is scorched with it passive, manas as subject(मेरा) मन संतप्त हो रहा है
vatsaḥ me — my own boy; vatsān avati — tends the calves; hanta — oh!; manaḥ santapyate — my heart is scorched.
My own boy is out tending the calves. Oh—my heart is scorched with it. Hear the echo: vatsaḥ, her darling, is minding the vatsas, the calves.
vatsa carries a śleṣa: it means both 'calf' and 'dear child.' Yaśodā's vatsa (her boy) is out tending the vatsas (the calves)—the same word for the herd and for the one she frets over.
L3definition
atra mukhye gauṇasya |
atrahere, in this verseयहाँ (इस उदाहरण में)
mukhyewithin the principal rasa—vatsala, parental love loc., the container-rasaमुख्य रस (वात्सल्य) में
gauṇasya[is a case] of the secondary rasa—karuṇa, pathos gen.; the elliptical verb is 'this is an instance'गौण रस (करुण) का (यह उदाहरण है)
atra — here; mukhye — within the principal rasa (vatsala); gauṇasya — [an instance] of the secondary rasa (karuṇa).
Rūpa tags the placement: here the secondary rasa, karuṇa, sits inside the principal rasa, vatsala. The whole verse is an instance of a gauṇa mood lodged within a mukhya one.
This one-line classificatory tag names what the udāharaṇa demonstrates for the maitrī-vaira-sthiti scheme: karuṇa (gauṇa) does not clash with vatsala (mukhya) but nests inside it.

atra — here; aniṣṭāśaṅkīni bandhu-hṛdayāṇi iti — per the maxim that loved ones' hearts fear the worst; śaṅkā-cintātiśayena — through her extreme anxious worry; śokaṁ sambhāvya — grief having arisen; śrī-vrajeśvarī-vacanāt — from Yaśodā's words; karuṇāvakāśaḥ — karuṇa finds its opening.

Jīva shows how karuṇa gets in. A loved one's heart, the saying goes, is quick to fear the worst. Yaśodā's worry runs to dread; grief takes shape; and in her words karuṇa finds an opening—right inside her motherly love.
The quoted line 'aniṣṭāśaṅkīni bandhu-hṛdayāṇi' is a proverbial verse-line—'the hearts of kinsfolk are, as it were, apprehensive of misfortune'—adduced to explain why a parent's mind leaps to imagining calamity.
