vatsalasya — for the parental rasa; suhṛt — the friends are; hāsyaḥ — hāsya; karuṇaḥ — karuṇa; tathā — and likewise; bhīṣma-bhit — bhīṣma-bhit.
Now the parental rasa (vatsala). Its friends are three: the comic rasa (hāsya), the compassionate rasa (karuṇa), and bhīṣma-bhit—a code-word the commentators will unpack in a moment.
This laharī (Uttara 8) classifies, rasa by rasa, which moods are friends (suhṛt / mitra), which neutral, and which enemies (śatru). Some rasas are named by code-word rather than plainly—bhīṣma-bhit here—and the commentary supplies the key.

śatruḥ — the enemies are; śuciḥ — śuci; yuddha-vīraḥ — yuddha-vīra; prītaḥ — prīta (dāsya); ca — and; raudraḥ — raudra; pūrvavat — as before.

Its enemies: śuci, the battle-heroism rasa (yuddha-vīra), prīta (the servitude rasa, dāsya), and the furious rasa (raudra)—the rest 'as before' (pūrvavat), pointing back to the scheme already settled.
'pūrvavat' ('as before') is the verse's shorthand for repeating the earlier verses' fuller treatment (the neutral rasas and the Kṛṣṇa-as-excitant detail) instead of re-listing it; Jīva calls this use an upalakṣaṇa (s7).

The hāsya and karuṇa meant here, Jīva says, are the varieties that belong to the first triad—that is, the varieties oriented to the first three primary rasas that precede vatsala.
'The first triad' = the three primary rasas that come before vatsala in this laharī's sequence: śānta, dāsya (prīta), and sakhya (preyas)—vatsala being the fourth. A gauṇa rasa such as hāsya or karuṇa takes different forms depending on which primary rasa it attaches to; Jīva pins down which form is meant.

The śuci meant here is the all-pervading variety (sarva-gata).
At the previous verse (4.8.5) Jīva glossed the friendly śuci as kṛṣṇa-gata, 'directed to Kṛṣṇa'; here, as an enemy of vatsala, it is the sarva-gata, 'all-pervading', variety—again fixing which form of the rasa is in play.

ataḥ pūrvavad ity upalakṣaṇam ||
ataḥtherefore, for this reasonइसलिए (इसी कारण)
pūrvavat itithe word 'pūrvavat' ('as before') in the verse'पूर्ववत्' — यह शब्द
upalakṣaṇamis used as an upalakṣaṇa—a pointer that stands in for more than it literally names predicate noun: 'is an indicatory mark'उपलक्षण है (केवल संकेत करने वाला चिह्न, न कि स्वरूप का अंग)
ataḥ — therefore; pūrvavat iti — the word 'pūrvavat'; upalakṣaṇam — is an indicatory pointer.
So the verse's 'pūrvavat' ('as before') is an upalakṣaṇa—an indirect pointer. It does not merely repeat one item; it gestures to the whole remaining scheme (the neutral rasas and the Kṛṣṇa-as-excitant detail) already settled in the earlier verses.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa: a viśeṣaṇa is part of what the thing is (the 'blue' in 'a blue lotus'); an upalakṣaṇa only helps you locate it and is no part of it ('the house with the crow on it'—the crow identifies the house yet belongs to neither). Here 'pūrvavat' works as an upalakṣaṇa: it points past its own literal content to the fuller scheme of the previous verses.

bhīṣma-bhit — bhīṣma-bhit; asura-viṣayaka-bhayānaka-bhedaḥ — is the demon-directed variety of the fearful rasa.
Viśvanātha decodes bhīṣma-bhit as the variety of the fearful rasa (bhayānaka) whose object is a demon (asura-viṣayaka). Jīva had called it the opponent-caused variety (s3); the two glosses stand side by side, unharmonized.
