There was a man who had become an absolute expert on the seducer's path — the rata-hiṇḍaka, the 'pleasure-thief.' It was as if he had taken formal initiation and sworn a vow, with lust for his religion.
An udāharaṇa illustrating bībhatsa-bhakti-rasa, the devotional rasa of disgust (laharī 7): the former libertine now recoils from what once drew him. The lead-in yathā— marks it as the example verse.

Viśvanātha runs the whole verse together as one paraphrase. On the rati-thief's path this man attained mastery; and he held emperor-like sway over the city of endless lechers — the women-chasers — doing just as he liked. So formerly he was a man sworn to a vow of lust. That very same man now chants the qualities of Hari, his eyes streaming with tears — and when a woman's face appears before him, his face twists up in disgust.
