tat-tad-vedī ca tad-bhaktaḥ — the one who knows those several beings, and his devotee; āśrayatvena — taken as the shelter [of the rasa]; tridhā ca — is of three kinds.
Now the āśraya of karuṇa-rasa — the person in whom the grief actually resides. He is the one who knows and experiences those several beings (Kṛṣṇa and the rest), that is, Kṛṣṇa's devotee. Taken in this role of shelter, he comes in three kinds.
ālambana (the persons on whom a rasa rests) has two sides: viṣaya, the one toward whom the emotion is aimed (Kṛṣṇa etc.), and āśraya, the one in whom it lives (the devotee). This line defines the āśraya side.

That shelter, too, is to be worked out case by case, by what fits the situation. As a rule he is not a śānta devotee or the like — grief of this kind does not usually rise in them.
śānta-ādi — the settled, neutral-toned devotional moods; the point is that karuṇa (grief) mostly does not take hold in a devotee whose standing mood is that calm.

The two words bhū-pāta and ghāta both attach to 'ground': one falls to the ground, and one strikes the ground with the hand — as the commentators spell out.

Jīva glosses tat-tad-vedī: it means the one who directly experiences the triad of such beings — Kṛṣṇa and the two others. That is why L1 calls the shelter threefold: there are three such objects to know.

Jīva reads the compact bhū-pāta-ghāta as two ground-actions: pāta is falling onto the ground, and ghāta is striking the ground with the hand. Both, he says, are to be taken this way.

Viśvanātha glosses tat-tad-vedī the same way: the one who does the experiencing of the triad of such beings, Kṛṣṇa and the rest — namely the devotee, who is of three kinds. So he ties the word directly to the tridhā of L1.

asya rasasya — of this rasa; āśraya-ālambanaḥ jñeyaḥ — he is to be known as the shelter-support.
This devotee, Viśvanātha adds, is to be known as the āśraya-ālambana of karuṇa-rasa — the foundational person in whom this grief resides.
ālambana (the persons a rasa rests on) has two sides: viṣaya-ālambana, the one the feeling is aimed at (a blue lotus's blue is part of what it is — here Kṛṣṇa is what the grief is over), and āśraya-ālambana, the one in whom the feeling lives (like the house marked by the crow perched on it — it locates the feeling; here the devotee is where the grief actually sits). Viśvanātha assigns the devotee to the āśraya side.

Here Viśvanātha unpacks L2's 'excluding śānta and the like': the point, he says, is that in devotees whose settled mood is śānta, karuṇa-rasa for the most part does not arise.
