aham — I; kuḍmalitāñjaliḥ — with hands cupped like a bud; muhuḥ — again and again; vīraṁ mayūra-dhvajaṁ — the hero Mayūra-dhvaja; vande — I worship.
Again and again, my hands cupped like a flower-bud, I bow to the hero Mayūra-dhvaja. The verse opens by naming its hero and the speaker's own worship of him.
An udāharaṇa (example verse) of the giving-heroism of vīra-bhakti-rasa — the dāna/tyāga-vīra whose standing emotion, tyāgotsāha ("eagerness to give up"), was defined at 4.3.43. King Mayūra-dhvaja lets his own body be sawn in half to give to Kṛṣṇa, who has come disguised as a brāhmaṇa asking for it.

By this hero — who wished to give half his own body to a brāhmaṇa who had come in disguise. And the poet quietly lifts the mask: that "brāhmaṇa" was really Kṛṣṇa, the enemy of Kaṁsa. So the gift is offered to the Lord himself, which makes it bhakti, not mere charity.

kaṣṭaṁ gadgadikākulo’smi kathanārambhād aho dhīmatā
kaṣṭaṁAlas! — an outcry of pain that breaks into the sentence interjection; it starts the embedded exclamation (the garbhita break Jīva analyzes below)हाय!
kathanārambhātfrom the very start of telling [his deed] ablative of cause — the choking is caused by merely beginning to narrateकहने का आरम्भ करते ही, इसी कारण (कहना शुरू करना ही व्याकुलता का हेतु)
ahooh!
dhīmatāby that wise one instrumental continuing yena — the agent of the sawing described in L4; grammatically it belongs under the outburst, not inside itउस बुद्धिमान् ने (जिसने) — यह 'जिसके द्वारा' को ही आगे बढ़ाता है, उद्गार का अंग नहीं, मुख्य वाक्य का कर्ता
kaṣṭaṁ — alas!; kathanārambhāt — at the mere start of telling; gadgadikākulaḥ asmi — I am choked with feeling; aho — oh!; dhīmatā — by that wise one...
Here the poet breaks off: "Alas! At the very start of merely telling his deed my voice already chokes — oh!" That sob is deliberate. Underneath it the main sentence keeps running: dhīmatā, "by that wise one," links forward to the sawing described next.
This line is the "embedded" break (garbhita) that Jīva discusses below: the whole exclamation "kaṣṭaṁ ... aho" is one sentence pushed into the middle of the main sentence (yena ... dhīmatā ... dāritam abhūt).

...by that wise hero his own head was split with a saw — and split joyfully, the sawing done by his own wife and son. He showed no reluctance; he took delight in giving himself away. That gladness in the giving is the heroism the verse holds up.

The source prints śivaḥ, but dāritam is neuter and can only agree with śiraḥ, "head"; Viśvanātha reads sva-śiraḥ, "his own head," which is the sense followed here.

In this verse the "kaṣṭaṁ ... aho" outburst is, on the books, a flaw — one sentence shoved into the middle of another. But Jīva rules: even that fault, here, is a merit. Why? Because it feeds camatkāra, the reader's astonishment. The poet's own voice breaking makes the deed land harder.
camatkāra: the flash of wonder or relish a poem produces — the test a device must serve. garbhita-doṣa: the "embedded" flaw, defined below in s5. The principle here is the standard poetic one: a nominal fault that heightens the intended effect counts as an ornament.

Notice its own middle clause, "even as we speak, behold, we thrill!," jammed into the sentence — the very embedded figure.
Why cited: Cited as the poeticians' own stock example (from the Sāhitya-darpaṇa) of the garbhita figure — one sentence inserted into the middle of another — to prove that this apparent "fault" is recognized and prized in standard poetics, so its use in the Mayūra-dhvaja verse is no blunder.

Then Jīva defines the term. "Garbhitatva" — being embedded — means just this: one whole sentence enters into the middle of another sentence. In our verse the sob "kaṣṭaṁ ... aho" is the intruder pushed inside "yena ... dāritam abhūt."

Viśvanātha lays the verse out in plain order and fixes the names. The "disguised brāhmaṇa" is Kṛṣṇa. The wise king, wishing to give him half his body, had his own head split with a saw — the tool people call karāta — the sawing done by his own wife and son, and done joyfully. Him, Mayūra-dhvaja, I worship. And at the mere start of telling his deed, my voice already chokes.
karāta: a common (deśī) name for the krakaca, the saw. Viśvanātha adds karaṇena ("as the instrument") and dvārā ("through, by the hands of") to fix the grammar: the saw is the tool, the wife and son are the agents wielding it.

Viśvanātha explains the exclamation "kaṣṭam." Its sense is: this itself is the great hardship — that I cannot even begin to tell such a deed without breaking down. The word does not lament the king's pain; it marks the teller's being overwhelmed by the wonder of it.
