L1definition
tad eva dara-saṁlakṣya-dantāgraṁ hasitaṁ bhavet ||
tad evathat very [smita just defined]; eva = the same smile, unchanged tad points back to smita, the grade defined in the previous verseवही (जो पूर्व श्लोक में स्मित कहा गया)
dara-saṁlakṣya-dantāgraṁbut now with the tips of the teeth just faintly showing dara- = 'a little'; the one added feature that raises the gradeजिसमें दाँतों के अग्रभाग थोड़े-से दिखाई पड़ें (दर = थोड़ा — यही एक बात जो श्रेणी को ऊपर उठा देती है)
hasitaṁ bhavetbecomes hasita (laughter of the next grade up)वह 'हसित' होता है
tad eva — that same smita; dara-saṁlakṣya-dantāgram — when the tooth-tips become slightly visible; hasitam bhavet — it becomes hasita.
Take that same smita just defined. Now let the tips of the teeth become just barely visible. That one addition is what turns it from smita into hasita, the next grade of laughter.
The lakṣaṇa (definition) of hasita, the second of the six grades of laughter (smita, hasita, vihasita, avahasita, apahasita, atihasita). Smita shows no teeth; hasita lets the tooth-tips show.

mad-veśena puraḥ-sthito harir asau putro’ham evāsmi te
mad-veśenadressed in a guise [making him look like] Abhimanyu — Kṛṣṇa in the man's own clothes instrumental of manner; the commentators gloss it tad-veśena, 'in his (Abhimanyu's) dress'मेरे वेश में (तृतीया, प्रकार का बोध); टीकाकार इसे 'तद्वेशेन' अर्थात् 'उस (अभिमन्यु) के वेश में' कहकर समझाते हैं
puraḥ-sthito harir asauthis Hari (Kṛṣṇa), now standing right in front of [Jaṭilā]सामने खड़ा यह हरि
putro’ham evāsmi te'I am indeed your son'; eva = truly, reallyमैं ही तेरा पुत्र हूँ
harir asau — this Hari; mad-veśena — in a guise like [Abhimanyu's]; puraḥ-sthitaḥ — standing before her; [says] putraḥ te aham eva asmi — 'I am truly your son.'
Kṛṣṇa has put on a disguise so that he looks exactly like Abhimanyu. He plants himself right in front of Jaṭilā and says: 'Mother, I really am your son.'
The lakṣaṇa/udāharaṇa pair: L1 (4.1.18) defines hasita — a smile that lets the tooth-tips show — and this verse (4.1.19), lead-in yathā, is its udāharaṇa, the illustrative verse in the poet's voice.

Kṛṣṇa finishes: 'Just look at me!' Jaṭilā swallows the whole story. Her eyes go red with rising anger — and it is she, so fooled, who will do the throwing-out in the next line.

skhalad-akṣarehis syllables stumbling and slipping locative absolute, agreeing with putre in L5 — 'when the son, his syllables faltering…'

skhalad-akṣare putre (L5) — when the son, his syllables faltering to just 'mā mā'; jaṭilayā — by Jaṭilā; vyākruśya — after shrieking at him; niṣkāsite (sati) — was thrown out.
Meanwhile the real Abhimanyu shows up. Too flustered to get a word out, he can only stammer 'mā, mā' — 'No, no!' His own mother Jaṭilā, fooled by the disguise, shrieks at him and throws him out.

prāṅgataḥ[driven] from the courtyard Viśvanātha (s5) glosses the scene as niṣkāsite 'from her own aṅgana (courtyard)'आगे (दूर) चला गया; विश्वनाथ इसे 'अपने आँगन से' (निकाला जाना) के रूप में लेते हैं

putre prāṅgataḥ (niṣkāsite) — once the son had been driven from the courtyard; sakhī-kulam — the troop of sakhīs; dantāṁśu-dhauta-adharam abhūt — became [girls] whose lips were washed by the rays of their teeth.
With the real son chased out of the courtyard, the whole band of sakhīs cracks up. Their teeth flash so bright it is as if their lips are being scrubbed white by the rays. That open, tooth-showing laughter is exactly hasita — the very grade the definition set out to illustrate.

Jīva sets up the whole comedy. Kṛṣṇa gets a look at Abhimanyu — Jaṭilā's son, who thinks he is Rādhā's husband. He copies the man's dress and comes to his house, approaching from a distance so that nobody sees through the disguise. The verse, Jīva says, is the speech Kṛṣṇa then makes to Jaṭilā.

When the verse says the son was 'driven out,' Jīva sharpens it: not just put outside — chased right off into the distance.

Jīva adds the comic reason he ends up so far away. The real son concludes his mother has gone crazy — she is embracing a stranger and throwing her own son out. So he bolts off to fetch his relatives. That is why he winds up far away, not just outside the door.

This is the heart of the joke. The real Abhimanyu is so upset he cannot form a whole word — all that comes out is 'mā, mā.' That, Viśvanātha says, is what the verse's skhalad-akṣare means. His own mother Jaṭilā, fooled, drives him out of her courtyard. At that, the whole band of sakhīs bursts out laughing, their teeth flashing so bright it is as if the rays scrub their lips clean. Their open, tooth-showing laughter is the hasita the verse set out to illustrate.
