sanātano nitya ātmā śrī-vigraho yasya saḥ śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ bhakta-niṣṭha-bhakty-atiśayena prītiṁ kurvan | pakṣe, sanātana-nāmā ātmā ātmīyo deho yasya saḥ bhakti-bhareṇa prītiṁ kurvan ||
sanātano nitya ātmā śrī-vigraho yasya saḥ śrī-kṛṣṇaḥhe whose self — his beautiful form — is eternal: that is Śrī Kṛṣṇa reading one of the śleṣa; ātmā glossed as śrī-vigraha, the Lord's own formजिनकी नित्य आत्मा — अर्थात् श्रीविग्रह (भगवान् का अपना स्वरूप) — सनातन है, वे श्रीकृष्ण हैं
bhakta-niṣṭha-bhakty-atiśayenabecause of the surpassing devotion that rests firmly in his devotees instrumental of cause — this reading supplies the source of the loveभक्त की निष्ठावान भक्ति की अधिकता के कारण — यही अर्थ प्रीति का स्रोत बताता है
prītiṁ kurvanas he makes/returns loveप्रीति करते हुए
pakṣeon the other reading marks the second, suspended sense of the same word sanātanātmā — kept open, not chosen over the firstदूसरे पक्ष में — उसी 'सनातनात्मा' शब्द का दूसरा अर्थ, जो पहले पर चुना नहीं गया, अपितु खुला रखा गया है
sanātana-nāmā ātmā ātmīyo deho yasya saḥhe whose self — his own body — bears the name Sanātana reading two; ātmā glossed as ātmīya deha, and sanātana taken as a proper nameजिनकी आत्मा — अर्थात् अपना देह — 'सनातन' नामवाली है, वे (सनातन गोस्वामी)
bhakti-bhareṇa prītiṁ kurvanas he makes love because of an overwhelming load of devotion this reading keeps the mūla's own phrase bhakti-bhareṇa as the causeभक्ति के गहन भार के कारण प्रीति करते हुए — यह अर्थ मूल का ही 'भक्तिभरेण' पद कारण रूप में रखता है
Reading one: sanātanaḥ nityaḥ ātmā śrī-vigrahaḥ yasya saḥ — he whose eternal self is his form; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ — namely Śrī Kṛṣṇa; bhakta-niṣṭha-bhakty-atiśayena — because of the surpassing devotion fixed in his devotees; prītiṁ kurvan — making love in return. || pakṣe — on the other reading: sanātana-nāmā ātmā ātmīyaḥ dehaḥ yasya saḥ — he whose self, his own body, is named Sanātana; bhakti-bhareṇa — by an overwhelming load of devotion; prītiṁ kurvan — making love.
Viśvanātha opens the pun and holds both halves. First reading: 'sanātanātmā' means the one whose eternal self is his own form — that is Kṛṣṇa, who returns love because of the surpassing devotion lodged in his devotees. Second reading, 'in the other sense': the one whose self, his very body, bears the name Sanātana — and here he reads the love as caused by bhakti-bhareṇa, the mūla's own phrase. He does not rank the two. Both stand: the verse blesses Kṛṣṇa and salutes Sanātana Gosvāmī at once.
A śleṣa (double-meaning) turning on one word split two ways: sanātana + ātmā. Reading one takes ātmā as 'form' (śrī-vigraha) and sanātana as 'eternal' → Kṛṣṇa. Reading two takes ātmā as 'body' and Sanātana as a proper name → Sanātana Gosvāmī. Notice each reading even pulls its cause-phrase from a different place — bhakta-niṣṭha-bhakty-atiśayena for Kṛṣṇa, bhakti-bhareṇa for Sanātana — so the two senses run cleanly in parallel.
