L1definition
dvayor militayor bhogaḥ sambhoga iti kīrtyate ||
dvayoḥof the two of them — the lover and the beloved, taken as a pair genitive dual; whose enjoyment it is. The dual holds them together as one couple, so no single-sided enjoyment countsदोनों का — नायक और नायिका, दोनों का मिलकर; द्विवचन दोनों को एक युगल बनाकर पकड़े रहता है, इसलिए किसी एक पक्ष का अकेला भोग यहाँ नहीं गिना जाता
militayoḥonce they have come together, once they have met past participle in the genitive dual, agreeing with dvayoḥ — the meeting is the condition, and this one word is what separates sambhoga from vipralambha, where they are apartजब वे दोनों मिल चुके हों — 'द्वयोः' के अनुरूप षष्ठी द्विवचन का भूतकालिक कृदन्त; मिलन ही शर्त है, और इसी एक शब्द से सम्भोग विप्रलम्भ से अलग हो जाता है, जहाँ वे अलग-अलग रहते हैं
bhogaḥthe enjoying, the being-together itself — this is the thing being definedजो भोग, अर्थात् आनन्द का अनुभव होता है
sambhogaḥ itigoes by the name 'sambhoga' printed sambhoga iti; iti puts the word in quotation marks — this is the term being fixed, not a descriptionउसका नाम 'सम्भोग' है — 'इति' शब्द को उद्धरण-चिह्नों में रख देता है; यहाँ पारिभाषिक संज्ञा बाँधी जा रही है, वर्णन नहीं किया जा रहा
kīrtyateis what it is called, is declared to be passive, third singular — the standard verb for laying down a technical nameकहा जाता है — कर्मवाच्य, प्रथम पुरुष एकवचन; पारिभाषिक नाम ठहराने की यही रूढ़ क्रिया है
dvayoḥ militayoḥ — of the two once they have come together; bhogaḥ — the enjoyment; sambhogaḥ iti — as 'sambhoga'; kīrtyate — is declared.
dvayoḥ — दोनों का; militayoḥ — मिल चुके हुए दोनों का; bhogaḥ — भोग; sambhogaḥ iti — 'सम्भोग', यह; kīrtyate — कहा जाता है।
Now the topic turns to sambhoga — union. The definition is one line and it turns on a single word. Take the two of them; let them have met. The enjoying that goes on then is what is called sambhoga. Notice what is doing the work: militayoḥ, 'having met'. The same two, the same love, but apart, and you are in vipralambha instead. Sambhoga is not a different feeling; it is the same feeling with the two of them in one place.
दोनों मिल चुके हों, तब उनका जो भोग होता है, उसी का नाम 'सम्भोग' है। द्विवचन दोनों को एक साथ बाँध देता है — अकेले किसी एक का सुख यह नहीं है। 'मिलितयोः' शर्त रखता है: मिलन के बिना यह संज्ञा नहीं लगती। और 'कीर्त्यते' बताता है कि यहाँ नाम ही निश्चित किया जा रहा है।
The lead-in is atha sambhogaḥ, 'now, sambhoga' — the standard way of opening a new topic. sam-bhoga is literally 'enjoying together': the prefix sam- carries what militayoḥ then spells out. It is the counterpart of vipralambha, separation, treated just before.
उपक्रम है 'अथ सम्भोगः' — 'अब सम्भोग', नया प्रकरण आरम्भ करने की यही रूढ़ रीति है। 'सम्भोग' का शब्दार्थ ही है 'साथ-साथ भोगना': 'सम्' उपसर्ग वही कहता है जिसे आगे 'मिलितयोः' खोलकर स्पष्ट कर देता है। यह ठीक पहले कहे गए विप्रलम्भ अर्थात् वियोग का प्रतिपक्ष है।

parama-anurāga-parayāwith her who was wholly given over to the highest anurāga — the deepest, ever-fresh love printed paramānurāga-parayā; instrumental feminine, describing Rādhā. -para at the end of a compound means 'intent on, having that as one's whole aim', so it is not that she has such love but that she is nothing elseजो परम अनुराग में ही तत्पर है, ऐसी (राधा) के साथ — तृतीया, स्त्रीलिंग, राधा का विशेषण; समास के अन्त में 'पर' का अर्थ है 'जिसका एकमात्र लक्ष्य वही हो', अतः बात यह नहीं कि उनमें ऐसा प्रेम है, बल्कि यह कि वे उसके सिवा और कुछ हैं ही नहीं। छपा है 'परमानुराग-परया'
athaand then — at that point in the meetingअब, तब
rādhayāwith Rādhā — she is the one he is with instrumental of accompaniment; the poet picks it up again in line 4 with tayā saha, 'together with her'राधा के साथ — सहार्थक तृतीया; चौथी पंक्ति में कवि इसे 'तया सह' कहकर फिर उठा लेता है
atha — then; parama-anurāga-parayā rādhayā — with Rādhā, who was given over wholly to the highest anurāga…
parama-anurāga-parayā — परम अनुराग में ही तत्पर, ऐसी; atha — अब; rādhayā — राधा के साथ।
Now the illustration, a verse borrowed from the Padyāvalī. It opens on her, not on him. Rādhā — and before her name, what she is made of: the highest anurāga, and she is nothing besides it. The sentence has no verb yet. The whole first half is description; you have to wait through two lines for anything to happen.
अब राधा के साथ — और वे राधा ऐसी हैं जो परम अनुराग में ही तत्पर हैं। 'पर' शब्द यही कहता है कि वह अनुराग उनका एकमात्र लक्ष्य है, कोई एक गुण भर नहीं। तृतीया साथ का सम्बन्ध दिखाती है, जिसे आगे 'तया सह' दुहराएगा।
An udāharaṇa of the lakṣaṇa just given in the preceding line — sambhoga, 'the enjoyment of the two once they have met' (3.5.34). The lead-in names its source: yathā padyāvalyām (199), 'as in the Padyāvalī, verse 199'. anurāga is the technical name for love that keeps renewing itself, so that the beloved is new at every seeing; parama makes it the highest grade of that.

parirambha-kauśala-vikāśi-bhāvayāwith her whose feeling was opening out as skill in embracing a second instrumental feminine describing Rādhā, running parallel to parama-anurāga-parayā. vikāśin is 'unfolding, coming into bloom'; the compound can be heard either way — her bhāva blossoming into that skill, or the skill making her bhāva visible — and the verse does not decide between themजिसका भाव आलिंगन की कुशलता में खिल रहा है, ऐसी (राधा) के साथ — यह राधा का दूसरा तृतीयान्त विशेषण है, जो 'परम-अनुराग-परया' के समानान्तर चलता है; 'विकाशिन्' अर्थात् 'खिलता हुआ, उन्मीलित होता हुआ'। समास दोनों तरह सुना जा सकता है — या तो उनका भाव उस कुशलता में खिल उठा, या वह कुशलता उनके भाव को प्रकट कर रही है — और पद्य इनमें से किसी एक का निर्णय नहीं करता
parirambha-kauśala-vikāśi-bhāvayā rādhayā — with Rādhā, whose feeling came into bloom as skill in embracing.
parirambha-kauśala-vikāśi-bhāvayā — जिसका भाव आलिंगन-कौशल में खिल रहा है, ऐसी (राधा) के साथ।
A second description of her, and it does something careful. The skill is not a technique she has learned. The inner feeling is what opens out, and the skill is the shape it takes when it opens. Bhāva on the inside; parirambha, the embrace, on the outside; vikāśi, blossoming, joining the two. That is how the verse keeps a physical line devotional.
उन्हीं राधा का दूसरा विशेषण: जिनका भाव आलिंगन की कुशलता में खिल उठा है। 'विकाशी' फूल के खिलने का शब्द है। समास को दो तरह पढ़ा जा सकता है — भाव उस कौशल में खिल रहा हो, अथवा वह कौशल भाव को खोलकर दिखा रहा हो। पद्य दोनों को खुला छोड़ देता है।
vikāśin belongs to the vocabulary of flowers opening — the same word used of a lotus at sunrise. Rūpa Gosvāmī's choice of illustration is deliberate: sambhoga was defined by the two having met, and this line shows the meeting from the inside, as feeling becoming gesture.

Now the subject, and now the object. He, with her — that is the sambhoga of the definition, the two together. And what they do is put as a public ceremony: a festival of receiving Kāma with honors. Desire is not indulged here, it is welcomed, the way a house receives a guest it has been waiting for. Keep in view that the verb is still coming.
अब कर्ता आता है — 'वह'। पर वह कौन है, यह अभी नहीं बताया जाता। उनके साथ, अर्थात् उन्हीं राधा के साथ — यही लक्षण का 'मिल चुके दोनों' वाला अंश है। और जो किया, वह है कामदेव के सत्कार का उत्सव। 'सभाजन' आदरणीय अतिथि के स्वागत का शब्द है।

Kṛṣṇa is identified by his crown rather than by his name, and it is the verse's last wordजिसके सिर पर मोर-पंख का शेखर है, वह — यह बहुव्रीहि यहाँ नाम की तरह खड़ा है: 'शिखी' मोर, 'शिखण्ड' उसकी पूँछ का पंख, 'शेखर' शिरोभूषण। कृष्ण अपने नाम से नहीं, अपने मुकुट से पहचाने जाते हैं, और यही पद्य का अन्तिम शब्द है
śikhi-śikhaṇḍa-śekharaḥ saḥ — he whose crown is a peacock feather; tayā saha — with her; smara-sabhājana-utsavam — the festival of honoring Kāma; niravāhayat — carried through.
niravāhayat — निभा दिया; śikhi-śikhaṇḍa-śekharaḥ — जिसके सिर पर मोर-पंख का शेखर है, उसने।
The verb, and then the name — except it is not a name. He whose crown is a peacock feather. That is who has been the unnamed 'he' since line 4, and you learn it only at the very end. And the verb is niravāhayat: he carried the festival through, the word for seeing a ceremony to its completion. So the whole verse is built as a rite — the honored guest is Kāma, the host is the peacock-crowned boy, and the celebration is carried out to the end with Rādhā.

Jīva does not gloss the verse; he points past it. The verse you just read shows one occasion of sambhoga. But the permanent version of it — union as a lasting state — is shown at the end of this verse. And he says whose: the goddesses of Vraja and the goddesses of the city, both. The word he leans on is yugapat, at once. Not the gopīs in one place and the queens in another, taken in turn, but both standing at the same time. The tu is what marks the shift from a single scene to a settled condition.
जीव गोस्वामी 'परमानुराग' पद्य के अन्त की ओर संकेत करते हैं। वहाँ, वे कहते हैं, नित्य स्थिति दिखाई गई है। और वह किनकी? व्रज की देवियों की भी, और पुर की देवियों की भी। 'च' दोनों को एक ही में जोड़ देता है। 'युगपत्' सबसे भारी शब्द है — दोनों एक ही साथ, न कि एक या दूसरी।
nitya-sthiti, 'permanent standing', is the state as against the episode: the verse gave a moment of union, this names union that does not stop. vraja-devī and pura-devī are the two households — the cowherd village and Dvārakā — and Jīva's point in naming both is that the source he is about to quote covers them in one breath.

And here is where it is shown: the verse that begins jayati jana-nivāsaḥ. Jīva gives only the opening words, as is normal, and leaves the rest to a reader who knows it. This sentence completes the one before it — that sentence said 'has been shown', and this one supplies by what.
यह दिखाना किसके द्वारा हुआ? 'जयति जननिवासः' इत्यादि वचन के द्वारा। पद्य को उसके पहले शब्दों से ही पुकारा जाता है, तो इतना कहना पूरे पद्य को उठा लेना है। 'आदि' जोड़कर वे बता देते हैं कि यह आरम्भ भर है, पूरा उद्धरण नहीं।
Why cited: Cited as the place where the permanent standing of both groups is displayed at once — the verse speaks of the women of Vraja and of the city in a single phrase, which is what licenses Jīva's yugapat, 'at one and the same time'.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह वचन इसीलिए उद्धृत है कि वहीं दोनों वर्गों की नित्य स्थिति एक ही साथ दिखाई गई है — पद्य व्रज की और नगर की, दोनों की स्त्रियों को एक ही वाक्यांश में कहता है, और यही जीव के 'युगपत्' का आधार है।

tayā rādhayā saha — together with her, Rādhā; kandarpasya sabhājanam — the honoring of Kandarpa; satkāraḥ — that is, a formal welcome; sammānanīyatvena svīkāraḥ — taking him in as one deserving honor; iti yāvat — that is all it means; tat-janma-utsavam — the festival at its birth; niravāhayat — he carried through.
tayā rādhayā saha — उन राधा के साथ; kandarpasya sabhājanam — कन्दर्प का सभाजन; satkāraḥ — सत्कार; sammānanīyatvena svīkāraḥ — सम्माननीय रूप से स्वीकार; iti yāvat — इतना ही तात्पर्य है; tat-janma-utsavam — उसके जन्म के उत्सव को; niravāhayat — निभा दिया।
Viśvanātha works on one compound. First the pronoun: tayā is Rādhā, he says so outright. Then smara-sabhājana. He gives it three times over, each tighter than the last. Honoring Kandarpa. Which is: a formal welcome. Which is: accepting him as someone who deserves to be held in honor. Then iti yāvat — that far and no further. Then the last piece, utsava, and he supplies a word the verse did not have: janma. A birth-festival. So the celebration is the kind you hold for something newly born. Desire arrives, is received as an honored guest, and its arrival is kept like a birthday.
sabhājana is a household word before it is a poetic one — the reception you give a guest at the door: a seat, water, honor. Viśvanātha's chain satkāraḥ → sammānanīyatvena svīkāraḥ moves from the outward act to the attitude inside it. In taj-janmotsavam the referent of tat is not fixed: 'that' may be the honoring he has just glossed, or Kandarpa, and the sentence leaves it standing either way.
