Friend, with the sound of his flute he is making me avaśā. The word is left open, and the commentators pull it two ways: either nothing at all is in her control any more, or she has been made her own mistress and steps past every boundary. That ambiguity is the point of the verse's last word.

The verse says bhrū-valli, with a short i, where the dictionary word is vallī. Jīva defends that. Māgha writes valli short, and so does a whole run of poets from the Gīta-govinda onward — two witnesses, poetic authority and settled usage. Then he adds a second option and leaves it standing: or you may simply recite bhrū-yugma-, 'the pair of brows'. He does not choose.
Why cited: Both lines are adduced as usage-proof that valli may stand with a short final i, licensing the reading bhrū-valli in the verse.

A jeweller tests gold by rubbing it on a black stone; the bright streak left behind is how he reads the metal. Jīva says the comparison is exact only if you supply a dropped word. The compound is not 'dress like a touchstone' but 'dress like the streak on a touchstone'. His dark body is the stone; the yellow cloth is the gold line drawn across it.
madhyama-pada-lopa is the compound type where an unspoken middle term must be read back in — like 'a mango-boy' for 'a boy who sells mangoes'. Here the missing term is the streak: nikaṣopala-svarṇa-rekhā-tulya-veśa.

Viśvanātha at the parallel place takes avaśā the third way, as asvatantrā, 'not independent'. The two commentators are not reconciled here; each is read on its own terms.
