kuvalaya-yuvatīnāṁ lehayann akṣi-bhṛṅgaiḥ
kuvalaya-yuvatīnāmbelonging to the young women of the kuvalaya — and kuvalaya here means the circle of the earth, so: the young women of the whole earth genitive, holding the eye-bees of the next phrase; kuvalaya is the verse's pivot-word — it will come back in line 2 in its other sense, 'blue lotus'कुवलय की युवतियों का — षष्ठी, जो आगे आने वाले 'नेत्र-भ्रमरों' से जुड़ती है; 'कुवलय' शब्द ही इस श्लोक की धुरी है, दूसरी पंक्ति में यही शब्द अपने दूसरे अर्थ 'नील कमल' में लौटेगा
lehayanmaking them lick, giving them a taste of present participle of the causative of lih, 'to lick'; whose licking it is — the women's eyes as agents or as objects — is exactly what the commentators fight overचटाता हुआ — 'लिह्' धातु के णिजन्त का वर्तमान कृदन्त; चाटना किसका है, अर्थात् युवतियों के नेत्र चाटने वाले हैं या चटाए जाने वाले, ठीक इसी पर टीकाकारों का विवाद है
akṣi-bhṛṅgaiḥby means of their eyes, which are bees instrumental in the text printed here — the eyes are the tool of the licking; Viśvanātha's gloss below instead puts the eye-bees in the accusative, as the thing made to lickनेत्र-रूपी भ्रमरों के द्वारा — यहाँ छपे पाठ में तृतीया है, अर्थात् आँखें ही चटाने का साधन हैं; नीचे विश्वनाथ अपनी व्याख्या में इन नेत्र-भ्रमरों को द्वितीया में रखते हैं, अर्थात् जिन्हें चटाया जाता है
kuvalaya-yuvatīnām — of the young women of the earth; akṣi-bhṛṅgaiḥ — with their bee-like eyes; lehayan — making them lick
kuvalaya-yuvatīnām — कुवलय की युवतियों का; lehayan — चटाता हुआ; akṣi-bhṛṅgaiḥ — नेत्र-रूपी भ्रमरों के द्वारा
The young women of the whole earth have eyes that are bees. He sets those bees licking. The word kuvalaya means 'earth' here — hold on to it, because the next line uses the same word for 'blue lotus'.
कुवलय की युवतियों के नेत्र ही भ्रमर हैं। वह उन नेत्र-भ्रमरों से चटाता है। यहाँ का पाठ तृतीया में है — नेत्र ही साधन हैं।
An udāharaṇa of harṣa, 'joy', which the lead-in introduces with 'harṣo, yathā' — quoted from Dāna-keli-kaumudī 34. The speaker is a young woman describing what the sight of him does to her.
यह हर्ष का उदाहरण है; प्रस्तावना 'हर्षो, यथा' कहकर इसे लाती है। यह श्लोक दान-केलि-कौमुदी ३४ से उद्धृत है। बोलने वाली एक युवती है, जो कहती है कि उसका दर्शन उसके साथ क्या कर देता है।

What he gives them to lick is the glow of his own limbs. That glow has the charm of blue-lotus petals. So the bees of their eyes settle on a blue-lotus-coloured body — the image completes itself.

kuvalayeti |
kuvalayetithe verse beginning kuvalaya… pratīka — the standard way a commentator picks a verse up, quoting its first word and adding iti'कुवलय' इत्यादि श्लोक — प्रतीक, अर्थात् टीकाकार की वह चाल जिससे वह श्लोक का पहला शब्द उद्धृत करके 'इति' जोड़ देता है और श्लोक को उठा लेता है
kuvalaya iti — [the verse] that begins with kuvalaya
kuvalayeti — 'कुवलय' इत्यादि श्लोक
Jīva picks the verse up by its opening word, kuvalaya. That word is where his comment will start.
जीव गोस्वामी श्लोक को उसके पहले शब्द से उठाते हैं। यही प्रतीक की रीति है।

The word kuvalaya appears twice and means two different things. First time: the earth. Second time: the blue lotus. Jīva settles that before anything else, because the whole picture depends on it — earthly women's eyes, and a lotus-blue body.
श्लोक में 'कुवलय' दो बार आया है। पहला भूमण्डल के अर्थ में है। दूसरा नील कमल के अर्थ में है। यही यहाँ का श्लेष है।

The poet never says the glow of his limbs is honey. No honey-metaphor was made. So, says Jīva, lehayan cannot carry the sense of tasting-by-drinking — there is nothing liquid to drink. It means only this: their eyes cling to him, they cannot look away.
यहाँ अंग-कान्तियों को मधु कहकर रूपक नहीं बनाया गया। इसीलिए 'लेहयन्' में पीने-चखने का अर्थ अभीष्ट नहीं है। उसका अर्थ केवल इतना है कि नेत्र वहीं आसक्त हो जाते हैं।
Viśvanātha reads this the opposite way below (s5): he finds the honey-metaphor suggested by the bee-metaphor, and therefore keeps the tasting sense. The two commentators are not reconciled here.

Two steps here. First the grammar: because lehayan does not mean eating or drinking, the rule that would turn the eye-bees into the object of the causative does not apply. That is why the verse leaves them in the instrumental, akṣi-bhṛṅgaiḥ. Then the identification: the 'mountain' is Govardhana — the context of the work tells us so — and once you say Govardhana, the hero of the verse is obviously Kṛṣṇa.
यहाँ खाने-पीने का अर्थ नहीं है, इस कारण भी नेत्र-भ्रमरों को णिजन्त का कर्म नहीं बनाया गया। वे णिच् से पहले के कर्ता हैं, इसलिए तृतीया में ही रहे। श्लोक का 'क्ष्माधर' प्रकरण के बल पर श्रीगोवर्धन है। इसीसे यह भी स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि यह नायक श्रीकृष्ण ही हैं।
The grammar at stake: when you causativize a verb, the original agent sometimes becomes the object. Compare English — 'the child eats' becomes 'he feeds the child', where the child is now the object; but 'Devadatta cooks' becomes 'he has the cooking done by Devadatta', where Devadatta stays the instrument. Sanskrit lets the first pattern happen only for verbs of going, knowing, and eating (and a few others). Jīva's point is that lehayan here is not a verb of eating, so we get the second pattern: instrumental, not accusative.

katham-bhūtaḥ — what is he like?; kuvalayaṁ bhū-maṇḍalam — kuvalaya means the earth; tatra-sthānāṁ yuvatīnām — of the young women there; akṣi-rūpa-bhṛṅgān — the bees that are their eyes; svāṅga-bhāsaḥ svīyāṅga-kāntīḥ — the radiance of his own limbs; lehayan āsvādayan — making them lick, giving them a taste; āsvādanārtha-liheḥ — because lih in the tasting sense; bhojanātmaka-pratyavasānārthatvam — has the eating-sense of pratyavasāna
He asks: what is this rogue like? Answer: he is the one who makes the eye-bees of the earth's women taste the glow of his limbs. Then the grammar. Viśvanātha holds that lih, when it means tasting, does belong to the class of eating-words. That single claim is what lets him make the eye-bees the object in the next sentence.
वह कैसा है? भूमण्डल की युवतियों के नेत्र-भ्रमरों को वह अपनी अंग-कान्तियाँ चटाता है। यहाँ नेत्र-भ्रमर द्वितीया में हैं। 'लिह्' आस्वादन के अर्थ में है, इसलिए वह भोजन-रूप प्रत्यवसान-अर्थ वाली धातु ठहरती है।
Note the split with Jīva, who ruled at s3–s4 that lehayan here has no eating or drinking sense at all. Viśvanātha asserts the opposite; the texts are left standing side by side.
यहाँ जीव गोस्वामी से मतभेद है — उन्होंने स३-स४ में निर्णय दिया था कि यहाँ 'लेहयन्' में खाने-पीने का अर्थ है ही नहीं। विश्वनाथ इसके ठीक विपरीत कहते हैं; दोनों पाठ अपनी-अपनी जगह ज्यों के त्यों खड़े रहने दिए गए हैं।

prayojya-kartṝṇām akṣi-bhṛṅgāṇāmof the eye-bees, which are the agents being made to act prayojya-kartṛ: the one whom the causer sets in motion — here the eyes that do the lickingप्रयोज्य कर्ता बने हुए उन नेत्र-भ्रमरों का — प्रयोज्य-कर्ता वह है जिसे प्रयोजक प्रवृत्त कराता है; यहाँ वे नेत्र ही, जो चाटते हैं
karmatvam itithey are the object — that is the conclusionकर्मत्व सिद्ध होता है — इसी से वे द्वितीया में आते हैं
tena ca — and by that; gati-buddhi-pratyavasānārtha ity ādinā — by the rule beginning 'gati-buddhi-pratyavasānārtha…'; prayojya-kartṝṇām akṣi-bhṛṅgāṇām — of the eye-bees, the agents set in motion; karmatvam iti — comes their being the object
tena ca — और इसी से; gati-buddhi-pratyavasānārtha ity ādinā — 'गति-बुद्धि-प्रत्यवसानार्थ' इत्यादि सूत्र से; prayojya-kartṝṇām akṣi-bhṛṅgāṇām — प्रयोज्य कर्ता नेत्र-भ्रमरों का; karmatvam iti — कर्मत्व होता है
Now he applies the rule. Pāṇini says that with verbs of going, knowing and eating, the person you make act becomes the grammatical object of the causative. lih is an eating-word, therefore the eye-bees are the object: he makes the eye-bees taste.
इसी कारण पाणिनि का 'गति-बुद्धि-प्रत्यवसानार्थ' सूत्र लागू होता है। चाटने वाले नेत्र प्रयोज्य कर्ता हैं। णिच् लगने पर वे कर्म बन जाते हैं।
Why cited: Pāṇini 1.4.52 is adduced as the rule that turns the eye-bees, the agents of the licking, into the object of the causative — grammatical proof for Viśvanātha's reading against the instrumental.
क्यों उद्धृत: पाणिनि १.४.५२ इसलिए उद्धृत किया गया है कि वही सूत्र चाटने वाले नेत्र-भ्रमरों को णिजन्त क्रिया का कर्म बना देता है — यह विश्वनाथ के पाठ का व्याकरण-प्रमाण है, तृतीया वाले पाठ के विरुद्ध।

kathaṁ-bhūtāḥ ? kuvalaya-dalasya nīlotpala-dalasya yā lakṣmīḥ śobhā tat-tulyā laṅgimā manoharatā yāsāṁ tathā-bhūtāḥ |
kathaṁ-bhūtāḥand what are they like? — now he asks about the radiances feminine plural, so the question is about svāṅga-bhāsaḥ, not about himवे कैसी हैं? — स्त्रीलिङ्ग बहुवचन है, इसलिए यह प्रश्न 'स्वाङ्ग-भासः' के विषय में है, उसके विषय में नहीं
kuvalaya-dalasya nīlotpala-dalasyaof a kuvalaya petal — meaning here a blue-lotus petal he replaces kuvalaya with nīlotpala to mark that this second occurrence carries the other senseकुवलय-दल का, अर्थात् नील कमल की पंखुड़ी का — 'कुवलय' के स्थान पर वे 'नीलोत्पल' रखकर दिखाते हैं कि इस दूसरी बार वह शब्द दूसरा अर्थ लिए हुए है
yā lakṣmīḥ śobhāthe lakṣmī it has, that is, its beautyजो लक्ष्मी, अर्थात् शोभा है
tat-tulyāequal to thatउसके समान
laṅgimā manoharatālaṅgimā, meaning charm — the power to steal the mindलङ्गिमा, अर्थात् मनोहरता
yāsāṁ tathā-bhūtāḥthe radiances that have such a charm are the ones meant he spells the bahuvrīhi out: yāsām … tāḥ, 'those whose charm it is'जिनकी है, वैसी वे — वे बहुव्रीहि को खोलकर रख देते हैं: 'यासाम्… ताः', अर्थात् जिनकी वह मनोहरता है
kathaṁ-bhūtāḥ — what are they like?; kuvalaya-dalasya nīlotpala-dalasya — of a kuvalaya, i.e. blue-lotus, petal; yā lakṣmīḥ śobhā — the beauty it has; tat-tulyā laṅgimā manoharatā — a charm equal to that; yāsām — whose it is; tathā-bhūtāḥ — such are they
kathaṁ-bhūtāḥ — वे कैसी?; kuvalaya-dalasya nīlotpala-dalasya — कुवलय-दल अर्थात् नीलोत्पल-दल का; yā lakṣmīḥ śobhā — जो शोभा; tat-tulyā — उसके तुल्य; laṅgimā manoharatā — लङ्गिमा अर्थात् मनोहरता; yāsāṁ tathā-bhūtāḥ — जिनकी है, वैसी
What are these radiances like? Take the beauty of a blue-lotus petal; their charm matches it. He unpacks the compound as a bahuvrīhi so it is clear the charm belongs to the radiances, not to the petals. Note he too reads this second kuvalaya as 'blue lotus'.
वे कान्तियाँ कैसी हैं? नील कमल की पंखुड़ी की जो शोभा है, वैसी ही मनोहरता उनमें है। यहाँ 'कुवलय' का अर्थ नीलोत्पल है। समास बहुव्रीहि है।

madhu-rūpakatvamits being, by metaphor, honeyमधु-रूपक होना, अर्थात् उन्हें मधु कहकर रूपक बनना
dhvanyateis suggested — not stated, but sounded out dhvani: what the words make you hear without saying itध्वनित होता है — ध्वनि वह है जो कहे बिना ही शब्दों से सुनाई पड़ जाए
bhṛṅga-rūpakeṇa — by the bee-metaphor; svāṅga-bhāsāḥ — of his limbs' glow; madhu-rūpakatvam — its being honey by metaphor; dhvanyate — is suggested
bhṛṅga-rūpakeṇa — भ्रमर-रूपक से; svāṅga-bhāsāḥ — अंग-कान्तियों का; madhu-rūpakatvam — मधु-रूपक होना; dhvanyate — ध्वनित होता है
Once the eyes are called bees, honey follows on its own. The poet never writes the word honey — but bees only settle for honey, so the glow of his limbs is heard as honey. That is suggestion, not statement.
भ्रमर का रूपक कहा गया है। उसी से अंग-कान्तियों का मधु-रूपक ध्वनित हो जाता है। कहा नहीं गया, फिर भी सुनाई पड़ता है।
This is the pivot of the disagreement. Jīva argued at s3 that no honey-metaphor was made, and drew his grammar from that; Viśvanātha says the metaphor is there by suggestion, and draws the opposite grammar. Both readings stand as they are.
यही मतभेद की धुरी है। जीव गोस्वामी ने स३ में कहा था कि मधु का रूपक बनाया ही नहीं गया, और उसी से अपना व्याकरण निकाला; विश्वनाथ कहते हैं कि वह रूपक ध्वनि से मौजूद है, और उलटा व्याकरण निकालते हैं। दोनों पाठ ज्यों के त्यों रहने दिए गए हैं।

tasmād āsvādayatherefore taste it! imperative — the unspoken invitation the figure is really makingइसलिए इसका आस्वादन कर — लोट् लकार; यही वह अनकहा निमन्त्रण है जो यह अलङ्कार वस्तुतः दे रहा है
iti protsāha-mayī prayojanāsuch is the point of the figure, and its whole flavour is encouragement prayojanā: what a figure of speech is for — the effect it is placed there to produceऐसी प्रोत्साहन से भरी प्रयोजना — प्रयोजना अर्थात् अलङ्कार का प्रयोजन, वह फल जिसके लिए उसे वहाँ रखा गया है
gamyateis what we are given to understandसमझ में आ जाती है
tataś ca — and from that; yasmāt idam madhu eva — since this is honey itself; tasmāt āsvādaya iti — therefore taste it!; protsāha-mayī prayojanā — a purpose made of encouragement; gamyate — is understood
tataś ca — और उससे; yasmān madhv eva idam — क्योंकि यह मधु ही है; tasmād āsvādaya — इसलिए आस्वादन कर; iti protsāha-mayī prayojanā — ऐसी प्रोत्साहन-मयी प्रयोजना; gamyate — समझी जाती है
So why is the metaphor there at all? To urge. It says: this is honey — so drink it. The figure is not decoration; its work is to push the eyes forward. That, says Viśvanātha, is what the verse leaves you understanding.
इससे यह प्रयोजन निकलता है — यह मधु ही है, इसलिए इसका आस्वादन कर। यही उकसाने वाला निमन्त्रण अलङ्कार का फल है। शब्दों में कहे बिना वह समझ में आ जाता है।
