preyasīṣu harer āsu pravarā vārṣabhānavī ||
preyasīṣuout of all the beloved women locative of the group from which one is singled out (nirdhāraṇa) — 'among X, Y is best'प्रेयसियों में से — जिस समूह में से एक को छाँटकर श्रेष्ठ कहा जा रहा है
harerbelonging to Hari, Kṛṣṇaहरि (कृष्ण) की
āsuthese ones, the ones just listed locative, agreeing with preyasīṣu; it points back to the beloveds already enumeratedइन (ऊपर गिनाई हुई) प्रेयसियों में
pravarāstands first, is the very bestसबसे श्रेष्ठ
vārṣabhānavīthe daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, that is, Rādhāवृषभानु की पुत्री (राधा)
āsu harer preyasīṣu — out of these beloved women of Hari; vārṣabhānavī — Vṛṣabhānu's daughter, Rādhā; pravarā — stands first.
preyasīṣu — प्रेयसियों में; harer — हरि की; āsu — इन्हीं में; pravarā — सर्वश्रेष्ठ; vārṣabhānavī — वृषभानुनन्दिनी।
Out of all these beloveds of Hari just listed, Vṛṣabhānu's daughter is the very best. Rādhā is named not by her own name here but by her father's — she is the one the whole list has been building toward.
हरि की जो प्रेयसियाँ अभी गिनाई गईं, उन सबमें वृषभानु की पुत्री ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं।
This line closes the survey of Kṛṣṇa's beloveds and singles out one. The next four lines, introduced by 'asyā rūpaṁ' ('her form is—'), describe her.
यह पंक्ति कृष्ण की प्रेयसियों की गणना को समेटकर उनमें से एक को छाँट देती है। इसके आगे की चार पंक्तियाँ 'अस्या रूपं' — 'इनका रूप ऐसा है' — इस उपक्रम से उन्हीं का वर्णन करती हैं।

mada-cakita-cakorī-cārutā-cora-dṛṣṭir
mada-cakita-made unsteady by intoxication instrumental sense folded into the compound: startled/reeling because of mada. Jīva and Viśvanātha both comment on a variant reading cakurā hereमद के कारण जो चकित (विह्वल, डगमगाती) है
cakorī-a female cakora birdचकोरी पक्षिणी की
cārutā-the loveliness that bird hasमनोहरता को
cora-dṛṣṭirshe whose glance steals that loveliness away bahuvrīhi: the whole compound describes Rādhā, 'she whose eyes are the thief of…'चुरा लेने वाली है दृष्टि जिसकी — यह सारा पद राधा का ही विशेषण है
mada-cakita-cakorī — a female cakora bird reeling with intoxication; tasyāḥ cārutā — her loveliness; cora-dṛṣṭiḥ — [Rādhā] whose glance steals it.
mada-cakita- — मद से विह्वल; cakorī- — चकोरी की; cārutā- — मनोहरता का; cora-dṛṣṭir — चोर है दृष्टि जिसकी।
A cakorī bird tipsy and startled is the standard of a lovely, quivering glance. Rādhā's eyes simply steal that loveliness from the bird. The bird is left with nothing; the beauty is now hers.
मद से डगमगाती चकोरी की जो मनोहरता है, उसे इनकी दृष्टि चुरा लेती है। अर्थात् वैसी चंचल-सुन्दर चितवन इन्हीं की है।
An udāharaṇa illustrating the rūpa of Vārṣabhānavī, the foremost of Hari's beloveds, declared in the line just above (3.5.7); the stanza is introduced by the lead-in 'asyā rūpaṁ—', 'her form is—'. Note the moon-thread running through the description: the cakorī is the bird said to live on moonbeams, and the next line has her face defeat the moon itself.

vadana-damita-rākārohiṇī-kānta-kīrtiḥ |
vadana-by her face instrumental of means folded into the compound — the face is what does the defeatingमुख के द्वारा — दबाने का काम मुख ही करता है
damita-has been beaten down, put in its placeदबा दी गई, हरा दी गई
rākā-rohiṇī-kānta-the lover of Rohiṇī on the full-moon night, that is, the full moonपूर्णिमा की रात्रि के रोहिणीकान्त (चन्द्रमा) की
kīrtiḥshe whose face has humbled that fame bahuvrīhi again: kīrti belongs to the moon, and the whole compound describes Rādhāकीर्ति — कीर्ति चन्द्रमा की है, और यह सारा पद राधा का विशेषण है
vadanena — by her face; rākā-rohiṇī-kāntasya — of the full moon, Rohiṇī's lover; kīrtiḥ damitā — the fame is beaten down; [sā] — she is such a one.
vadana- — मुख से; damita- — दमित; rākā-rohiṇī-kānta- — पूर्णिमा के चन्द्रमा की; kīrtiḥ — कीर्ति।
The moon is famous for beauty. Rādhā's face beats that fame flat. The moon is named the long way round — Rohiṇī's lover, on the full-moon night — so you feel the moon at its fullest and still see it lose.
इनके मुख ने पूर्णिमा के चन्द्रमा की कीर्ति को दबा दिया है। जो शोभा चन्द्रमा की मानी जाती थी, वह अब इनके मुख की है।
rākā is the night of the full moon; rohiṇī-kānta, 'Rohiṇī's beloved', is a standard name for the moon, since Rohiṇī is his favourite among the twenty-seven wives who are the lunar mansions.
'राका' पूर्णिमा की रात है; 'रोहिणीकान्त' अर्थात् 'रोहिणी का प्रियतम' चन्द्रमा का प्रसिद्ध नाम है, क्योंकि नक्षत्ररूपिणी सत्ताईस पत्नियों में रोहिणी ही उनकी सबसे प्रिय हैं।

avikala-kala-dhautoddhūti-dhaureyaka-śrīr
avikala-without a single flawजिसमें कोई कमी न हो, निर्दोष
kala-dhauta-refined gold kala-dhauta, literally 'washed clean', is a standing word for goldस्वर्ण का — 'कलधौत' शब्द का प्रसिद्ध अर्थ सोना है
uddhūti-the towering renown gold hasउत्कर्ष, ऊँची प्रतिष्ठा
dhaureyaka-takes that load on itself the way the lead ox takes the yokeउस भार को ढोने वाली, अर्थात् उसका बोझ अपने ऊपर ले लेने वाली
śrīrshe whose beauty does so bahuvrīhi: śrī is the beauty, and the compound as a whole is said of Rādhāशोभा — शोभा वह है, और यह सारा पद राधा के लिए कहा गया है
avikala-kala-dhautasya — of flawless refined gold; uddhūtiḥ — its towering renown; tasyāḥ dhaureyakā śrīḥ — [she] whose beauty is the lead-bearer of it.
avikala- — निर्दोष; kala-dhauta- — सोने का; uddhūti- — उत्कर्ष; dhaureyaka- — भारवाहक; śrīr — शोभा।
Flawless gold has a famous glow. Rādhā's own glow now carries that reputation — she shoulders it the way the lead ox carries the cart. Gold's fame has changed hands.
निर्दोष सोने का जो ऊँचा उत्कर्ष है, उसका सारा भार इनकी शोभा ने अपने ऊपर ले लिया है।
dhaureya belongs first to ploughing and carting: the dhurya is the ox yoked at the pole who bears the real weight. Viśvanātha glosses it exactly so, bhāra-vāhikā, 'the one who carries the load'. Here the load is a reputation, not a cart.
'धौरेय' शब्द पहले हल और गाड़ी का है — 'धुर्य' वह बैल है जो जुए के पास जुतकर असली बोझ उठाता है। विश्वनाथ ठीक इसी अर्थ में 'भारवाहिका' कहकर इसकी व्याख्या करते हैं। यहाँ जो भार ढोया जा रहा है, वह गाड़ी नहीं, कीर्ति है।

madhurima-madhu-pātrī rājate paśya rādhā ||
madhurima-sweetness, mādhuryaमाधुर्य, मिठास

madhurima-madhu-pātrī — the cup of the honey that is sweetness; rādhā — Rādhā; rājate — shines; paśya — look!
madhurima- — माधुर्य; madhu- — मधु; pātrī — पात्री; rājate — शोभित होती हैं; paśya — देखो; rādhā — राधा।
Sweetness itself is the honey; Rādhā is the cup you drink it from. Look — she is shining. The verse opened with her father's name and closes with her own.
देखो, राधा शोभित हो रही हैं — जो माधुर्यरूपी मधु की पात्री हैं। श्लोक यहाँ परिभाषा नहीं देता, चित्र दिखाकर सामने बैठे सुनने वाले को पुकारता है।
This is the phrase Viśvanātha unpacks at the end of his comment: mādhuryam eva madhu, tasya pāna-pātrī.
इसी पद को विश्वनाथ अपनी टीका के अन्त में खोलते हैं — 'माधुर्यम् एव मधु, तस्य पान-पात्री', अर्थात् माधुर्य ही मधु है और वे उसे पीने की पात्री हैं।

madena cakurā capalā yā cakorī |
madenabecause she is drunk instrumental of cause — the intoxication is why the bird is unsteadyमद के कारण — मतवाली होने से ही वह डगमगाती है
cakurāthe word cakurā, which Jīva is reading here in place of cakitā'चकुरा' अर्थात् चंचल (यही जीव का पाठ है)
capalāmeans restless, flickering, never stillचपल, अस्थिर
yā cakorīthe female cakora bird who is like thatजो चकोरी है
yā cakorī — the cakorī bird who; madena — because she is drunk; cakurā — is 'cakurā'; [tat] capalā — that is, restless.
madena — मद से; cakurā — चकुरा; capalā — चपल; yā cakorī — जो चकोरी।
Jīva takes the word in the verse as cakurā and glosses it with a plain word: capalā, restless. The bird is drunk, so she cannot hold still. That flickering unsteadiness is what makes her glance lovely — and it is that loveliness Rādhā's eyes carry off.
मद के कारण जो चकोरी 'चकुरा' अर्थात् चपल हो उठी है — पद का पहला अंश इतना ही कहता है।
Jīva glosses only the first member; he leaves the rest of the bahuvrīhi (cārutā-cora-dṛṣṭiḥ) to be read off the verse itself.
जीव केवल पहले अंश की व्याख्या करते हैं; बहुव्रीहि का शेष भाग (चारुता-चोर-दृष्टिः) वे श्लोक से ही समझ लेने को छोड़ देते हैं।

cakitā iti pāṭhe — where the reading is 'cakitā'; lakṣaṇayā — by implication; sa eva arthaḥ — the meaning is just that same one.
cakiteti pāṭhe — 'चकित' पाठ में; lakṣaṇayā — लक्षणा से; sa eva arthaḥ — वही अर्थ।
Jīva records a second reading of the verse: some texts have cakitā, 'startled', not cakurā. He does not force a choice. He says the startled reading gets you to the same sense, only by implication — startled leads you to restless — instead of saying it outright.
यदि 'चकित' ऐसा पाठ मानें, तब भी लक्षणा से वही अर्थ निकल आता है।
Two readings stand side by side here; the verse text printed in the mūla above has cakita, while Jīva's own lemma is cakurā.
यहाँ दो पाठ साथ-साथ खड़े हैं — ऊपर मूल में छपा श्लोक 'चकित' पढ़ता है, जबकि जीव का अपना प्रतीक 'चकुरा' है।

madena — मद से; cakurā — चकुरा; cañcalā — चंचल; yā cakorī — जो चकोरी; tasyāś cārutāyāś — उसकी मनोहरता की; caurī dṛṣṭir yasyāḥ — चोरनी दृष्टि है जिसकी।
Viśvanātha reads the same word cakurā and glosses it cañcalā, flighty. Then he finishes the compound, which Jīva left alone: the bird's loveliness is what is stolen, and the thief is Rādhā's glance. The 'she whose…' at the end shows the whole compound is an epithet of Rādhā, not a statement about the bird.
मद से जो चकोरी 'चकुरा' अर्थात् चंचल है, उसकी मनोहरता को चुराने वाली दृष्टि जिनकी है — वे राधा। विश्वनाथ चोर को स्त्रीलिंग में 'चौरी' लिखते हैं, जिससे वह 'दृष्टि' के अनुरूप बैठे।

Viśvanātha translates the ornate name into the plain one: Rohiṇī's lover on the full-moon night simply means the full moon. Her face subdued its fame. He again supplies the relative, 'by whom', so you see the line is describing Rādhā.
जिनके मुख से पूर्णिमा के चन्द्रमा की कीर्ति दब गई — वे राधा। विश्वनाथ 'रोहिणीकान्त' का सीधा अर्थ 'पूर्णिमा का चन्द्रमा' बता देते हैं।

Three glosses in one breath. First, the poetic word for gold means the finest gold there is, and its uddhūti is a fame nothing outranks. Second, dhaureyaka means the load-bearer, like the lead ox at the yoke: Rādhā's beauty now shoulders the reputation that used to be gold's. Third, the honey in the last line is not honey plus sweetness — the sweetness is the honey, and she is the cup you drink it from.
निर्दोष सोने का जो उत्कर्ष है — अर्थात् वह ख्याति जिससे बढ़कर कोई नहीं — उसी का भार जिनकी शोभा-सम्पत्ति ढो रही है, वे राधा। और माधुर्य ही मधु है; उसी को पीने की पात्री वे हैं।
dhaureyaka comes from cart and plough language: the dhurya is the ox yoked at the pole who takes the real weight. Viśvanātha keeps the picture and gives the plain word, bhāra-vāhikā, so the transfer is concrete — the burden of gold's good name has been handed over to her.
'धौरेयक' शब्द गाड़ी और हल की भाषा से आया है — 'धुर्य' वह बैल है जो जुए के पास जुतकर असली बोझ लेता है। विश्वनाथ यह चित्र बनाए रखते हुए सीधा शब्द 'भारवाहिका' दे देते हैं, जिससे भार का हस्तान्तरण ठोस हो जाता है — सोने की सुकीर्ति का बोझ अब इन्हीं के कंधों पर आ पड़ा है।
