nava-nava-vara-mādhurī-dhurīṇāḥ
nava-nava-ever new, new at every moment the doubled nava-nava carries repetition — 'new and new again', not merely 'new'नित्य नयी — नयी और फिर नयी; 'नव' का दुहराव बताता है कि नवीनता एक बार की नहीं, बार-बार होती रहती है
vara-mādhurī-of a sweetness that is the finest there isउत्तम माधुर्य की — जो मिठास सबसे श्रेष्ठ है, उसकी
dhurīṇāḥthey carry that whole load — they are the ones who bear it, so they stand first in it dhurīṇa is from dhur, the yoke-end of a cart; the bearer of the yoke is also the leader of the teamवे ही उस भार को उठानेवाली हैं — जुए के आगे जुती हुई, अर्थात् उसी माधुर्य को वहन करनेवाली और उसमें अग्रणी
nava-nava-vara-mādhurī — of a sweetness that is the finest there is and new at every moment; dhurīṇāḥ — they are the ones who carry that load, and so stand first in it.
nava-nava — नित्य नयी; vara-mādhurī — उत्तम माधुर्य की; dhurīṇāḥ — भार उठानेवाली, अग्रणी।
They bear the very best sweetness — and it is new at every moment. The load of that sweetness rests on them. Bearing it, they lead in it.
उनका माधुर्य सदा नया-नया रहता है। उस श्रेष्ठ माधुर्य का सारा भार वे ही उठाती हैं। जो भार उठाता है, वही आगे भी चलता है।
dhurīṇa literally names the ox yoked at the shaft of the cart: the one who takes the weight is also the one in front. Viśvanātha takes it in the plain 'load-bearer' sense (bhāra-vāhakāḥ).
'धुरीण' शब्द का सीधा अर्थ है — गाड़ी की धुरी पर जुता हुआ बैल। जो बोझ सहता है, वही सबसे आगे रहता है। विश्वनाथ इसे सरल अर्थ में ही लेते हैं — भार-वाहक।

praṇaya-taraṅga-karambitātaraṅgāḥ |
praṇaya-taraṅga-by the waves of praṇaya — love so intimate that it drops all formality instrumental in force: these waves are what does the mixing, as the commentators' praṇaya-taraṅgaiḥ showsप्रणय की तरंगों के द्वारा — मिलाने का काम ये तरंगें ही करती हैं, जैसा टीकाकारों के 'प्रणय-तरङ्गैः' से स्पष्ट है
karambitā-taraṅgāḥtheir inner faculty is stirred through and through with those waves — mixed with them, not merely touched by them printed as karambitā-taraṅgāḥ; all three commentators read the compound as karambita-antaraṅgāḥ, 'whose antaraṅga (inner faculty) is mixed'छपा हुआ पाठ 'करम्बिता-तरङ्गाः' है; तीनों टीकाकार इसे 'करम्बित-अन्तरङ्गाः' पढ़ते हैं — जिनका अन्तरङ्ग (भीतरी करण) मिला-जुला हुआ है
praṇaya-taraṅgaiḥ — by the waves of praṇaya, that formality-free love; karambita-antaraṅgāḥ — their inner faculty is mixed right through with them.
praṇaya-taraṅga — प्रणय की तरंगों से; karambitā-taraṅgāḥ (करम्बित-अन्तरङ्गाः) — जिनका अन्तरङ्ग उनसे मिश्रित है।
Waves of praṇaya keep breaking inside them. The inside — the mind and all its movements — is not just wet with that love; it is mixed through with it. Love is the medium they think in.
प्रणय की तरंगें उनके भीतर घुल-मिल गयी हैं। भीतरी करण अलग नहीं रह जाता — वह उन्हीं तरंगों से सना हुआ है।
karambita means 'mixed in, stirred together' — the commentators gloss it with the everyday word miśrita. The line's inner word is read as antaraṅga, 'the inner limb', which Jīva and Viśvanātha then unpack as antaḥ-karaṇa and its vṛttis.
'करम्बित' का अर्थ है — मिला हुआ, घुला-मिला। टीकाकार इसे रोज़ के शब्द 'मिश्रित' से ही समझाते हैं। पंक्ति के भीतर का शब्द 'अन्तरङ्ग' पढ़ा जाता है, अर्थात् भीतरी अंग, जिसे जीव और विश्वनाथ आगे अन्तःकरण और उसकी वृत्तियों के रूप में खोलते हैं।

nija-ramaṇatayā hariṁ bhajantiḥ
nija-ramaṇatayātaking him as their own lover — that is the relation in which they approach him instrumental of the mode: 'by way of his being their own ramaṇa', i.e. in the mood of a lover, not of a master or a fatherइस भाव से कि वे उनके अपने रमण हैं — प्रियतम के भाव से, स्वामी या पिता के भाव से नहीं
hariṁHari — he is the one they serveश्रीहरि को
bhajantiḥthey worship, they serve him — this is what they are doing, continuously for bhajantyaḥ, feminine nominative plural of the present participle, describing the kiśorīs of L4जो भजती हैं — 'भजन्त्यः' के स्थान पर; स्त्रीलिंग प्रथमा बहुवचन का वर्तमान कृदन्त, जो चौथी पंक्ति की किशोरियों का वर्णन करता है
tāḥ — those young girls; nija-ramaṇatayā — taking him as their very own lover; hariṁ — Hari; bhajantyaḥ — worship him.
nija-ramaṇatayā — अपने रमण के भाव से; hariṁ — श्रीहरि को; bhajantiḥ — भजती हुई।
They worship Hari. But not as master, not as child — as their own lover. That relation is the whole of their bhajana.
वे श्रीहरि को भजती हैं। पर किस भाव से? इस भाव से कि वे उनके अपने रमण हैं। यही मधुर भाव है।
ramaṇa is the lover, the one who delights and is delighted with; nija, 'one's own', makes the claim personal — he is theirs.
'रमण' वह है जो रमाता है और स्वयं भी रमता है — प्रियतम। 'निज' अर्थात् 'अपना' — इससे बात व्यक्तिगत हो जाती है; वे उन्हीं के हैं।

praṇamata tāḥ paramādbhutāḥ kiśorīḥ ||
praṇamatabow down — he tells us to do it imperative, second person plural: the verse's one main verb, and the point everything else has been building toप्रणाम करो — मध्यम पुरुष बहुवचन की आज्ञा; यही श्लोक की एकमात्र मुख्य क्रिया है, और शेष सब इसी तक पहुँचाने के लिए कहा गया
tāḥto those very ones just describedउन्हीं को
parama-adbhutāḥutterly astonishing — nothing prepares you for themजो परम अद्भुत हैं — आश्चर्य की पराकाष्ठा
kiśorīḥthe young girls — that is who they areउन किशोरियों को
tāḥ parama-adbhutāḥ kiśorīḥ — to those utterly astonishing young girls; praṇamata — bow down.
praṇamata — प्रणाम करो; tāḥ — उन; parama-adbhutāḥ — परम अद्भुत; kiśorīḥ — किशोरियों को।
Now the instruction. Bow to them. Those young girls, the ones just described, are astonishing past anything — so bow.
अब आज्ञा आती है — उन किशोरियों को प्रणाम करो। वे परम अद्भुत हैं। तीनों पंक्तियों का वर्णन इसी एक क्रिया पर आकर टिकता है।
The lead-in atha tasya preyasyaḥ — 'now, his beloveds' — sets the verse up: these are the beloveds of the Kṛṣṇa described just before, the āśraya side of madhura-rasa.
इससे पहले की भूमिका 'अथ तस्य प्रेयस्यः' — 'अब उनकी प्रेयसियाँ' — श्लोक को खड़ा करती है। अभी-अभी जिन कृष्ण का वर्णन हुआ, ये उन्हीं की प्रेयसियाँ हैं — मधुर रस का आश्रय-पक्ष।

antar ity antaḥ-karaṇam |
antar itithe word antar in the verse — that is what he is picking up iti quoting the pratīka, the catchword lifted from the mūla'अन्तर्' — यह जो मूल से उठाया गया प्रतीक-शब्द है, उसे 'इति' से उद्धृत करके
antaḥ-karaṇammeans the inner faculty — the mind with which one thinks and feelsउसका अर्थ है अन्तःकरण — भीतरवाला करण
antar iti — the word antar; antaḥ-karaṇam — means the antaḥ-karaṇa, the inner faculty.
antar iti — 'अन्तर्' ऐसा जो पद है; antaḥ-karaṇam — वह अन्तःकरण है।
First he settles one word. 'antar' in the verse is not a vague 'inside'. It means the antaḥ-karaṇa — the inner instrument, the mind.
जीव गोस्वामी पहले शब्द ही पकड़ते हैं। मूल का 'अन्तर्' अन्तःकरण है। यही तय हो जाने पर आगे की बात खुलती है।
antaḥ-karaṇa, 'the inner instrument', is the standard term for the thinking-and-feeling faculty. Fixing it here is what lets the next line read antar-aṅgāni as 'the limbs of the mind'.
'अन्तःकरण' अर्थात् भीतरी करण — सोचने और अनुभव करनेवाली शक्ति का शास्त्रीय नाम। यहाँ इसे तय कर देने से ही अगली पंक्ति में 'अन्तर्-अङ्गानि' का अर्थ 'मन के अंग' बनता है।

karambitāniare stirred together with themजो करम्बित हैं — घुले-मिले हुए
miśritānithat is, are mixed — he replaces the rare word with the everyday oneअर्थात् मिश्रित — सीधे शब्द से वही बात
antaḥkaraṇasya aṅgānithe limbs of the inner faculty — so antar-aṅga is read as 'the aṅgas of the antaḥ-karaṇa'अन्तःकरण के अंग
vṛttayaḥmeaning its vṛttis, the movements the mind actually makesअर्थात् उसकी वृत्तियाँ
yāsāṁ tāḥthe women who have these — the whole thing describes them the bahuvrīhi formula: yāsām … tāḥ, 'those of whom …', resolving the compound as an adjective of the kiśorīsजिनकी ऐसी हों, वे — बहुव्रीहि की यही रीति है; इससे सारा समास किशोरियों का विशेषण बन जाता है
yāsāṁ antaḥkaraṇasya aṅgāni — the women the limbs of whose inner faculty; vṛttayaḥ — that is, its vṛttis, its movements; praṇaya-taraṅgaiḥ karambitāni miśritāni — are stirred and mixed through with the waves of praṇaya; tāḥ — they are the ones meant.
praṇaya-taraṅgaiḥ — प्रणय की तरंगों से; karambitāni — करम्बित; miśritāni — मिश्रित; antaḥkaraṇasya aṅgāni — अन्तःकरण के अंग; vṛttayaḥ — वृत्तियाँ; yāsāṁ tāḥ — जिनकी वैसी हों, वे।
He unties the compound. The 'inner limbs' are the limbs of the antaḥ-karaṇa — and by limbs he means its vṛttis, the mind's own movements. Every one of those movements is mixed through with waves of praṇaya. And the women who are like that are the ones the verse is pointing to.
अन्तःकरण के अंग अर्थात् उसकी वृत्तियाँ। वे प्रणय की तरंगों से मिश्रित हैं। जिन किशोरियों की वृत्तियाँ ऐसी हों, वे ही यहाँ कही जा रही हैं।
vṛtti is the mind's activity — a thought, an impulse, a turn of feeling. Jīva's point is precise: the love has not merely settled around the mind, it has entered each single motion the mind makes.
'वृत्ति' मन की हलचल है — एक विचार, एक उठान, भाव का एक मोड़। जीव गोस्वामी की बात बारीक है — प्रेम मन के चारों ओर ही नहीं ठहरा, वह मन की हर एक हलचल में घुस गया है।

mādhurīṇāṁ dhurīṇā bhāra-vāhakāḥ |
mādhurīṇāṁof the sweetnesses — plural, so more than one kind of sweetness genitive supplied to show what the load consists of; the mūla had it locked inside a compoundमाधुर्यों का — षष्ठी लाकर दिखाया कि बोझ किस चीज़ का है; मूल में यह समास के भीतर बँधा था
dhurīṇāḥthe word dhurīṇāḥ in the verseधुरीण अर्थात् धुरी पर जुते हुए
bhāra-vāhakāḥmeans the ones who carry the weight of themअर्थात् भार ढोनेवाले
mādhurīṇāṁ — of those sweetnesses; dhurīṇāḥ — the word dhurīṇāḥ; bhāra-vāhakāḥ — means their weight-carriers.
mādhurīṇāṁ — माधुर्यों का; dhurīṇāḥ — धुरीण; bhāra-vāhakāḥ — भार ढोनेवाले।
Viśvanātha takes dhurīṇāḥ in its plain sense: load-bearers. They carry the weight of those sweetnesses. Sweetness is not something laid on them from outside — it is the burden they were made to bear.
विश्वनाथ 'धुरीण' का अर्थ सीधा करते हैं — भार ढोनेवाला। और भार किसका? माधुर्यों का। मूल में यह षष्ठी समास के भीतर छिपी थी।
bhāra-vāhaka is an ordinary word for a porter or a pack-animal. Viśvanātha does not reach for anything grander: dhurīṇa is the one at the yoke, and the yoke here is mādhurī.

He does both steps in one breath. 'antar' is the antaḥ-karaṇa. The 'limbs' of that antaḥ-karaṇa are its vṛttis, its movements. And those movements are mixed through with waves of praṇaya. The whole phrase, then, describes the girls.
'अन्तर्' का अर्थ अन्तःकरण। उसके अंग अर्थात् वृत्तियाँ प्रणय की तरंगों से मिश्रित हैं। जिनकी ऐसी दशा हो, वे ही ये किशोरियाँ हैं।
Viśvanātha here carries Jīva's two sentences over word for word into a single line. Take that as it stands — he is settling the reading, not arguing with anyone.
विश्वनाथ यहाँ जीव गोस्वामी के दोनों वाक्य ज्यों-के-त्यों एक ही पंक्ति में उतार लेते हैं। इसे वैसा ही लीजिए — वे पाठ को पक्का कर रहे हैं, किसी से विवाद नहीं कर रहे।
