vadana-kamalaṁ putrasyāhaṁ nimīlati śaiśave
vadana-kamalaṁhis face, which is a lotus — the thing she never got to look at, and the word she will not let go of karmadhāraya, "the face which is a lotus"; accusative, and it has to wait until alokayam in the next line to find its verbमुख-रूपी कमल को — कर्मधारय, अर्थात् वह मुख जो कमल ही है; कर्म कारक में है, पर इसकी क्रिया अगली पंक्ति के 'अलोकयम्' तक रुकी रहती है
putrasyaof my son — she does not say "of Kṛṣṇa", she says "of my son", which is where the vātsalya sits genitive, hanging on vadana-kamalaṁपुत्र का — षष्ठी, जो मुख-कमल से जुड़ती है
ahaṁI — the mother herself, put up front because the loss is hersमैं
nimīlati śaiśaveonce his babyhood folded shut — the moment the childhood was over, and the seeing should have begun locative absolute (Viśvanātha completes it with sati). ni-√mīl is the verb used of a lotus closing at nightfall — set against vadana-kamalam it makes the picture double: the childhood closes like a lotus, and the lotus-face is what goes unseenजब शैशव मुँद गया, तब — सति-सप्तमी (विश्वनाथ इसे 'सति' जोड़कर पूरा करते हैं)।
śaiśave nimīlati [sati] — once the babyhood had closed; putrasya — of my son; vadana-kamalaṁ — the lotus face; ahaṁ — I
My son's face is a lotus. His babyhood closed and was gone. And I — the sentence stops here and finishes only in the next line.
An udāharaṇa of viṣāda, "dejection", the third of the vyabhicāri-bhāvas listed here under separation (ayoga) in vatsala-rasa, after utkaṇṭhā and viyoga. The lakṣaṇa it has to show is the one at 2.4.14-15: anutāpa, the remorse that comes iṣṭānavāpti — from not getting the thing one wanted — with lament (vilāpa) as its outward sign. Watch for both: everything she names is something she wanted and never received, and the whole verse is a lament. Jīva names the speaker below.

nava-taruṇimārambhonmṛṣṭaṁ na ramyam alokayam |
nava-taruṇimārambhonmṛṣṭaṁpolished bright by the first touch of new young manhood — the face at exactly the age she missed nava-taruṇima-ārambha-unmṛṣṭam, accusative agreeing with vadana-kamalam in the previous line. unmṛṣṭa is "wiped clean, burnished"; ārambha is the beginning, so it is the very onset of youth doing the polishing. Viśvanātha reduces the whole compound to plain tāruṇya-yuktam, "joined with youth"नयी तरुणाई के आरम्भ से माँजा हुआ, चमका दिया गया — नव-तरुणिम-आरम्भ-उन्मृष्टम्; कर्म कारक में, पिछली पंक्ति के 'वदन-कमलम्' का विशेषण।
nanot — the negation that governs the whole sentence and is the point of the verseनहीं
ramyamlovely — she grants the beauty in the same breath in which she says she never saw it accusative, a second word describing vadana-kamalamमनोहर, रमणीय — कर्म कारक में, वदन-कमलम् का दूसरा विशेषण
alokayamI did not look upon it — a plain past statement, not a wish; the chance is gone imperfect, first person singular, of ā-√lok in its -aya- form: "I looked at". The first person is what makes this a lament and not a descriptionमैंने देखा — आ-लोक् धातु के णिच्-रूप का लङ्, उत्तम पुरुष एकवचन।
nava-taruṇimārambhonmṛṣṭaṁ — burnished by the onset of new youth; ramyam — lovely; vadana-kamalaṁ — the lotus face; ahaṁ na alokayam — I did not look upon
New manhood had just come and polished that face bright. It was lovely. I never saw it.
The grief is not that the face is gone — it is that a particular face, at a particular age, existed and she was not there for it. That is iṣṭānavāpti, "not getting what one wanted", the first cause of viṣāda in the definition at 2.4.14.

abhinava-vadhū-yuktaṁwith a brand-new bride at his side — the second thing she never saw, and the one a mother waits her whole life for bahuvrīhi in force, accusative, describing amum. abhinava sharpens nava: not merely new but freshly, just nowजो अभी-अभी ब्याही नयी वधू से युक्त है — अर्थ में बहुव्रीहि, कर्म कारक में, 'अमुम्' का विशेषण।
caand — a second missed occasion added to the first, so the lament buildsऔर
amuṁhim, that one over there — she points at a son who is far away; Viśvanātha supplies the name, Śrī Kṛṣṇa accusative of adas, the far demonstrative — the distance in the pronoun is doing work in a separation verseउसको — 'अदस्' का कर्म कारक, अर्थात् दूर का संकेत करने वाला सर्वनाम; वियोग के श्लोक में सर्वनाम की यह दूरी अपना काम कर रही है
nanot — the second denial, matching the firstनहीं
harmyaminto the great house — the home she would have walked the couple into second accusative, the place entered; the causative verb takes both him and the house.
aveśayaṁI did not usher him in — the causative: not "he entered" but "I made him enter", which is the mother's own act she was denied for āveśayam, imperfect first singular of the causative of ā-√viś, the initial vowel shortened for the metre; Viśvanātha writes it out as prāveśayamमैंने प्रवेश कराया — यह 'आवेशयम्' ही है, आ-विश् के णिजन्त का लङ् उत्तम पुरुष एकवचन, छन्द के लिए आदि स्वर ह्रस्व कर दिया गया; विश्वनाथ इसे खोलकर 'प्रावेशयम्' लिखते हैं
abhinava-vadhū-yuktaṁ ca amuṁ — and him, together with his new bride; harmyam — into the mansion; ahaṁ na aveśayam — I did not lead in
And I never led him into the house with his new bride on his arm. The verb is causative — the welcoming was to have been her doing, and she never got to do it.
Two griefs, in order: she missed the face of his youth, and she missed his wedding home-coming. Both are things that already happened somewhere else — which is why Jīva sets the verse after news arrives from Dvārakā.

Śvaphalka's son is the messenger who came for Kṛṣṇa; Viśvanātha names him earlier in this same laharī, at 3.4.61, as Akrūra, there addressed by the other patronymic, gāndinī-putra. The verse itself refuses the name and gives only the patronymic — a lament, not an accusation to his face.

Jīva gives the setting in one line. Word comes to Vraja that Kṛṣṇa is living as a householder in Dvārakā. Hearing it, Vraja's queen says this.
The setting is what makes the verse viṣāda and not simple longing. She is not waiting for a son who might come back — she has just learned that his youth and his marriage already happened, elsewhere, without her. So Jīva identifies the speaker as śrī-vrajeśvarī, the queen of Vraja.

śaiśave nimīlati gate sati tāruṇya-yuktaṁ vadana-kamalaṁ ahaṁ nālokayam, nava-vadhū-yuktaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ gṛhaṁ nāhaṁ prāveśayam ||
śaiśave nimīlati gate sati"when the babyhood closed" means when it was gone — he replaces the lotus verb with the plain one and completes the locative absolute gate is his gloss on nimīlati, and sati is supplied to close the construction: "once the babyhood, having gone, was so". Note what the plain gloss costs: ni-√mīl was the lotus word, and gata is notजब शैशव बीत चुका, तब — 'गते' उनका 'निमीलति' पर किया गया अर्थ है, और वाक्य बन्द करने के लिए 'सति' जोड़ा गया है, अर्थात् 'शैशव के चले जाने पर'।
tāruṇya-yuktaṁ"joined with youth" — his short gloss on the long compound about the polish of new manhood accusative, standing in for nava-taruṇimārambhonmṛṣṭamतारुण्य से युक्त — कर्म कारक, जो मूल के 'नव-तरुणिम-आरम्भ-उन्मृष्टम्' के स्थान पर रखा गया है
vadana-kamalaṁ ahaṁ nālokayam"I did not look upon the lotus face" — he restates the first sentence in prose order so the object and the verb finally stand together he leaves vadana-kamalam untouched — the one word in the verse that needed no glossingमुख-कमल को मैंने नहीं देखा — 'वदन-कमलम्' को वे ज्यों का त्यों छोड़ देते हैं; श्लोक में यही एक शब्द है जिसे किसी व्याख्या की आवश्यकता नहीं थी
nava-vadhū-yuktaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ"Śrī Kṛṣṇa, together with his new bride" — he says outright who amum, "that one", is he also flattens abhinava to nava; the identification of the far demonstrative is the real work hereनयी वधू से युक्त श्रीकृष्ण को — वे 'अभिनव' को भी सपाट करके 'नव' कर देते हैं; असली काम यहाँ यह है कि दूर के सर्वनाम 'अमुम्' का नाम खोल दिया गया
gṛhaṁ nāhaṁ prāveśayam"I did not bring him into the home" — harmya becomes plain gṛha, and the causative is written out in full prāveśayam for the verse's aveśayam, keeping the double accusative visible: him, and the houseघर में मैंने प्रवेश नहीं कराया — श्लोक के 'अवेशयम्' के लिए 'प्रावेशयम्', जिससे दोनों कर्म सामने बने रहते हैं — उसे भी, और घर को भी
śaiśave nimīlati gate sati — when his babyhood had closed, that is, was gone; tāruṇya-yuktaṁ vadana-kamalaṁ — the lotus face joined with youth; ahaṁ na alokayam — I did not look upon; nava-vadhū-yuktaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ — Kṛṣṇa with his new bride; gṛhaṁ na ahaṁ prāveśayam — I did not bring into the home
Viśvanātha simply straightens the verse out. Babyhood "closed" means it was over. The polished face is just the face with youth on it. And the "him" of the third line is Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Two sentences, both negative: I never saw the face, I never brought him and his bride inside.
He does two jobs at once: he supplies sati so the locative absolute in the first line reads cleanly, and he supplies the name behind amum. He does not touch hanta or the thunderbolt in the fourth line — the lament needs no decoding.
