bahūnām api sad-bhāve viyoge’tra tu kecana |
bahūnām apiof the many of them — even though a great many are on hand here genitive plural depending on sad-bhāve; api concedes the point — nobody is denying that the whole crowd of passing feelings occurs in this rasaयद्यपि बहुत-से भाव होते हैं — 'अपि' इस बात को मान ही लेता है, कोई इसका निषेध नहीं कर रहा
sad-bhāvegranted that they are present — that is not what is at issue locative of circumstance, working like a concessive: 'while / although they exist'उनके विद्यमान रहते हुए भी
viyogein separation — when parent and child are parted locative naming the condition under which the rule holds; viyoga is the parting of those who had been together, and is the half of vatsala-rasa this section is treatingवियोग में — जब मिले हुए बिछुड़ जाते हैं; वत्सल-रस का यही आधा भाग यहाँ चल रहा है
atrahere — in this rasa, the love of a parentयहाँ, इसी रस में
tubut — the turn to the exception: many occur, but only some go to extremesपरन्तु
kecanasome few of them, and these are they nominative plural, the subject that the list in the next line fills out and that amī picks up at the endकुछ ही — जिनकी गिनती अगली पंक्ति करती है और जिन्हें अन्त में 'अमी' उठा लेता है
bahūnām api sad-bhāve — although many of them are present; tu — still; atra viyoge — here, in separation within this rasa; kecana — some few
Many passing feelings show up here. That is granted. But in separation, in this rasa of parental love, only some of them go to extremes. The line names the exception; the next line lists which ones.
The many being spoken of are the vyabhicāri-bhāvas, the passing feelings that come and go inside a rasa. The claim is not that only these occur, but that only these run to excess.

Here is the list. Brooding. Sinking of heart. Being sick of everything. Going numb. Feeling wretched. Losing hold of oneself. Six named so far; the seventh and eighth come in the next line.
These are standard vyabhicāri-bhāva names, each a technical term: cintā, viṣāda, nirveda, jāḍya, dainya, cāpala. Keep the Sanskrit and let the plain gloss carry the sense.

unmāda-mohau ity ādyāḥ — going out of one's mind, blacking out, and others like them; amī — these ones; atyudrekam vrajanti — run to sheer excess
Add unmāda, going out of one's mind, and moha, blacking out — and others of that kind. These are the ones that run to excess when a parent is separated from the child. The point of the verse is not the list itself but the word atyudreka: in vatsala-rasa these feelings do not merely pass through, they overflow.
The rule is about degree, not membership. Other vyabhicāri-bhāvas occur too; what marks parental separation is that this particular set goes past measure.

This four-line verse is the udāharaṇa of cintā, the first item of the list in the preceding verse — the stanza's lead-in is atra cintā, 'here, cintā'. So everything described is meant to be read as brooding gone to excess in viyoga.

And this milk of yours — it curdles even as it flows. Your sighs are that hot. Three symptoms now: the mind tied up, the eyes fixed, and the milk turning on the way out.
The milk is the decisive detail. Fixed eyes and a dull mind could belong to any grief; milk that curdles from a mother's own heat can only belong to a mother separated from her child. Jīva makes exactly this point on this line.

ākramyaseyou are being overrun, taken by force passive second person singular of ā-kram, a word for an army overrunning ground; she is not feeling grief so much as being invaded by itतुम आक्रान्त की जा रही हो — 'आ-क्रम्' वह शब्द है जो सेना के भूमि को रौंद डालने पर चलता है; वे शोक अनुभव कर रही हों, ऐसा नहीं, वे उससे आक्रान्त हो रही हैं
vallava-rājñi — O queen of the cowherds; nūnam — surely; putra-viraha-udghūrṇābhiḥ — by the surging waves of separation from your son; ākramyase — you are being overrun
So: O queen of the cowherds, you are being overrun by the waves of separation from your son. She says nūnam, 'surely' — she worked it out from what she saw. The verb is passive and violent: the mother is not doing the grieving, the grief is taking her.
The whole stanza is one inference. Three signs are laid out in the first three lines, and this line draws the conclusion. That structure is itself the portrait of cintā: someone standing there brooding, being read by another person.

Jīva sets the scene. Śrī Kṛṣṇa has gone off to the forest. Some woman, watching the mother, says these words. He does not tell us who the speaker is — only that it is a woman, and that she is speaking to the mother about her son.
Naming the son as Kṛṣṇa is Jīva's contribution, not the verse's — the stanza itself says only putra, 'son'.

pāṭha evathis reading, precisely this one pāṭha is the wording as it stands in the text; eva is doing real work — it singles this wording out against some other, and Jīva does not say what the other isयही पाठ, जैसा ग्रन्थ में है वैसा ही — 'एव' यहाँ काम कर रहा है, वह इस पाठ को किसी दूसरे पाठ से अलग करता है, पर जीव वह दूसरा बताते नहीं

Two notes from Jīva. First, sandānita simply means bound. Second, and this is the point: it is this reading of the third line — the one about the milk — that shows the separation is a mother's from her son. His eva says this wording and not another. He is telling us that the milk detail is what fixes the rasa as vatsala.
The eva implies a rival wording of that line which Jīva is setting aside; he does not quote it, so the decode does not supply one.

Viśvanātha unpacks the long compound. The pupil is unmoving — that is, still; and bent — that is, crooked. The compound describes the eyes, and the eyes have stood like that. Then the third line: the flowing stanya, which he says plainly is milk, comes to curdling because the sighs are hot. He is doing two jobs at once — turning a bahuvrīhi into a relative clause a student can follow, and replacing the poem's rarer words with everyday ones.
The yatra device is worth watching: whenever a commentator restates a compound as 'that in which X is such', he is telling you the compound is not naming a thing but describing one.
