vatsasya hanta śarad-indu-vinindi-vaktraṁ
vatsasyaof the boy — of our darling child; his is the face they are waiting for genitive depending on vaktram at the end of the line. vatsa literally means 'calf'; used of a child it is the standard word of parental endearment, and its presence here is what marks the speech as vatsala and not any other rasaहमारे लाल का — 'वत्स' वही शब्द है जिससे माता-पिता अपने बालक को दुलार से पुकारते हैं; षष्ठी है और पंक्ति के अन्त वाले 'वक्त्रम्' से जुड़ती है
hantaah! — the sigh the longing breaks out in an exclamation, here of ache rather than of surprise; it belongs to the speakers, not to Rūpa's own voiceहाय! — यह विस्मय का नहीं, हृदय की टीस का उद्गार है; यह बोलने वालियों का शब्द है, रूप गोस्वामी का अपना नहीं
śarad-indu-vinindi-vaktramthat face of his, which puts the autumn moon to shame śarad-indu 'the autumn moon' — the clearest, fullest moon of the year — and vinindi 'mocking, showing up'; the whole is one bahuvrīhi describing vaktram, the face, which is the subject of the verb in the next lineवह मुख, जो शरद् ऋतु के चन्द्रमा को भी नीचा दिखा देता है — शरद् का चन्द्रमा वर्ष भर में सबसे स्वच्छ और पूर्ण होता है, फिर भी 'विनिन्दि' अर्थात् उसकी भी हँसी उड़ाने वाला; पूरा पद बहुव्रीहि है और 'वक्त्रम्' का विशेषण है, और यही वक्त्र आगे की पंक्ति की क्रिया का कर्ता है
hanta — ah!; vatsasya — of the boy; śarad-indu-vinindi-vaktram — that face which puts the autumn moon to shame
vatsasya — हमारे लाल का; hanta — हाय!; śarad-indu-vinindi-vaktram — शरद् के चन्द्रमा को भी नीचा दिखाने वाला मुख
Ah — the boy's face. A face that shames the autumn moon. That is what the speakers are holding in mind; the sentence they begin here finishes in the next line.
हाय! हमारे लाल का वह मुख — जो शरद् के चन्द्रमा को भी लजा दे।
The lead-in reads atha ayoge utkaṇṭhitam, yathā — 'now, longing (utkaṇṭhita) in ayoga', the separation of those who have not yet come together at all. This verse is the udāharaṇa of that: the ache is for a face never yet seen, not for one lately lost.
इससे पहले की भूमिका है 'अथ अयोगे उत्कण्ठितम्, यथा' — अर्थात् अब अयोग में उत्कण्ठा; अयोग वह विरह है जिनका अभी मिलन हुआ ही नहीं। यह श्लोक उसी का उदाहरण है: तड़प उस मुख के लिए है जिसे अभी देखा ही नहीं, न कि किसी खोए हुए के लिए।

sampādayiṣyati kadā nayanotsavaṁ naḥ |
sampādayiṣyatiwill it bring about future of sam-pad in the causative; the subject is vaktram, 'the face', from the line beforeकब सम्पन्न करेगा — सम्-पद् धातु का णिजन्त भविष्यत्; कर्ता पिछली पंक्ति का 'वक्त्रम्' अर्थात् वही मुख है
kadāwhen? — and that one word is the whole of their state; they are not asking for anything except the dayकब?
nayanotsavama festival for the eyes nayana-utsava; the object of the verb — the seeing itself is the festival, so nothing is wanted beyond the sightनयनों का उत्सव — नयन + उत्सव, क्रिया का कर्म; दर्शन ही उत्सव है, इसलिए दर्शन से आगे कुछ भी नहीं चाहिए
naḥfor us — they speak as a group, not one longing woman but severalहम सबका, हमारे लिए
vatsasya śarad-indu-vinindi-vaktram — the boy's face, which puts the autumn moon to shame; kadā — when; naḥ — for us; nayanotsavam sampādayiṣyati — will it bring about a festival for the eyes
sampādayiṣyati — सम्पन्न करेगा; kadā — कब; nayanotsavam — नयनों का उत्सव; naḥ — हमारे लिए
When will that face make a festival for our eyes? That is the question, and it is asked in the plural — for us. They ask only for the day; the sight itself would be the whole festival.
वह मुख हमारे नयनों का उत्सव कब कराएगा?
Longing at this pitch is measured in time, not in favours: the verb is a future and the question-word is kadā.
इस ऊँचाई की उत्कण्ठा समय से नापी जाती है, किसी कृपा-प्रसाद से नहीं — इसीलिए क्रिया भविष्यत् में है और प्रश्नवाचक शब्द 'कदा' है।

ity acyute viharati vraja-bāṭikāyām
itiso they keep saying — this closes the words just quoted and hands them back to the poet iti marks the end of the quoted longing; everything before it was their speech, everything after is Rūpa's own frameइस प्रकार — 'इति' से उद्धृत तड़प समाप्त होती है: इससे पहले का सब उन्हीं का कहा हुआ है, इसके बाद का रूप गोस्वामी का अपना कथन
acyutewhile Acyuta — 'he who never slips away' — locative, and with viharati it makes a locative absolute: 'while he is playing'. The irony sits in the name: the one called 'never-falling-away' is exactly the one they cannot reachजब अच्युत — सप्तमी, और 'विहरति' के साथ मिलकर सति-सप्तमी बनती है; नाम में ही विडम्बना है — जिन्हें 'कभी न छूटने वाला' कहा जाता है, वही इनकी पहुँच से बाहर हैं
viharatiis off playing, enjoying himself present participle in the locative, agreeing with acyute; the sense is 'all the while that he plays there, this longing goes on here'लीला कर रहे होते हैं, तब — सप्तमी में वर्तमान कृदन्त, 'अच्युते' के साथ अन्वित; भाव यह कि जब तक वे वहाँ खेलते रहते हैं, तब तक यहाँ यह तड़प चलती रहती है

iti — so they say; acyute vraja-bāṭikāyām viharati — while Acyuta is playing in the grove of Vraja
iti — इस प्रकार; acyute — जब अच्युत; viharati — लीला करते हैं, तब; vraja-bāṭikāyām — व्रज की वाटिका में
That is what they keep saying. And all the while, Acyuta is off playing in the groves of Vraja. He is somewhere else; the longing is here. Notice the name chosen — Acyuta, the one who never slips from his own — used of the very boy they cannot get to.
इस प्रकार — जब अच्युत व्रज की वाटिका में लीला कर रहे हैं, तब।
The two halves are held apart on purpose: his play in one place, their waiting in another. That gap is what makes this ayoga — separation of those who have not yet met — rather than viyoga, the parting of those who once were together.
दोनों आधे जान-बूझकर अलग-अलग रखे गए हैं: उनकी लीला एक ओर, इनकी प्रतीक्षा दूसरी ओर। यही अन्तर इसे अयोग बनाता है — उनका विरह जिनका मिलन अभी हुआ ही नहीं — न कि वियोग, जो कभी साथ रह चुकों का बिछोह है।

ūrvī tvarā jayati devaka-nandinīnām ||
ūrvīwide, ample — the urgency has no edges to it feminine adjective agreeing with tvarā. Viśvanātha's commentary takes the word in the sense gurvī, mahatī — 'weighty, great' — see his noteविशाल — स्त्रीलिंग विशेषण, 'त्वरा' के साथ अन्वित; विश्वनाथ अपनी टीका में इस शब्द को 'गुर्वी, महती' के अर्थ में लेते हैं — उनकी टिप्पणी देखिए
tvarāthe hurry — the cannot-wait-one-more-day of them tvarā is haste, the impatience of the one who wants it now; it is the named feeling of the verse and what the whole illustration is offered forत्वरा, वह उतावली जो अभी-का-अभी चाहती है — यही इस श्लोक का नामित भाव है और इसी के लिए यह उदाहरण दिया गया है
jayatistands triumphant — all honour to it jayati, 'it conquers', is the poet's word of praise; the feeling itself, not any person, is what is being glorifiedजय पा रही है — 'जयति' कवि का स्तुति-वचन है; यहाँ किसी व्यक्ति की नहीं, उसी भाव की महिमा गाई जा रही है
devaka-nandinīnāmof Devaka's daughters — theirs is the hurry genitive plural, so more than one daughter; the plural is why the earlier naḥ, 'for us', was in the plural tooदेवक की पुत्रियों की — षष्ठी बहुवचन, अतः एक नहीं, अनेक पुत्रियाँ; इसी बहुवचन के कारण पहले आया 'नः' अर्थात् 'हमारे' भी बहुवचन में था
devaka-nandinīnām — of Devaka's daughters; ūrvī tvarā — the wide, unbounded hurry; jayati — stands triumphant
ūrvī — विशाल; tvarā — त्वरा; jayati — जय पा रही है; devaka-nandinīnām — देवक की पुत्रियों की
All glory to the hurry of Devaka's daughters — a hurry with no bounds to it. The verse ends by praising the feeling itself, not the women and not the boy. That is the point of an udāharaṇa here: what is being shown off is utkaṇṭhitā, longing in ayoga.
देवक की पुत्रियों की यह विशाल त्वरा जय पा रही है।
'Devaka's daughters' in the plural: Devakī and her sisters. They are related to Kṛṣṇa by birth and by parental affection, yet he is growing up in Vraja and they have not seen him — which is exactly the situation ayoga names.

Viśvanātha reads the verse this way. Acyuta is playing in the land of Vraja. Meanwhile Devakī and the others are saying, 'When will Śrī Kṛṣṇa's face make a festival for our eyes?' The hurry that this question is made of — a heavy hurry, a great one — is what the verse glorifies. He does three plain things: he names the speakers as Devakī and her group, he names the face as Kṛṣṇa's, and he takes ūrvī in the sense of great.
जब अच्युत व्रज-भूमि में लीला कर रहे हैं, तब देवकी आदि के मन में यह उठता है — 'श्रीकृष्ण का मुख हमारे नयनों का उत्सव कब करेगा?' इस प्रकार की जो गुर्वी अर्थात् महती त्वरा है, वही जय पा रही है।
The verse reads ūrvī, 'wide, ample'; Viśvanātha explains with gurvī, 'weighty', and then with mahatī, 'great'. Whether gurvī stood in the text he read or is offered as a synonym, the sense he settles on is 'great'.
श्लोक में पाठ है 'ऊर्वी' अर्थात् चौड़ी, विशाल; विश्वनाथ उसे 'गुर्वी' अर्थात् भारी से समझाते हैं और फिर 'महती' अर्थात् बड़ी से। 'गुर्वी' उनके सामने के पाठ में था या वे उसे पर्याय-रूप में देते हैं — यह खुला रहे; जिस अर्थ पर वे टिकते हैं वह 'महती' ही है।
