pīyūṣa-dyutibhiḥ stanādri-patitaiḥ kṣīrotkarair jāhnavī
pīyūṣa-dyutibhiḥshining white as nectar — that is how the streams look, and the whiteness is what lets them pass for the Gaṅgā bahuvrīhi, "having the sheen of pīyūṣa (nectar)"; instrumental plural, agreeing with kṣīrotkaraiḥ later in the lineजिनकी कान्ति अमृत जैसी है — ऐसी (धाराओं) के द्वारा
stanādri-patitaiḥfallen down from the mountain that is her breast — a river has to come off a mountain, and this one does stana-adri is a karmadhāraya, "the breast which is a mountain"; the ablative sense ("from") is folded inside the compound with patitaस्तन रूपी पर्वत से गिरी हुई (उन धाराओं) के द्वारा
kṣīrotkaraiḥby floods of kṣīra pouring down — and kṣīra is the pivot word of the whole verse, since it means both milk and water instrumental plural, the means by which the river came to be; utkara is a heap, a mass, a great quantity. Both Jīva and Viśvanātha stop here to gloss kṣīra twice overक्षीर की बड़ी-बड़ी राशियों के द्वारा — इन्हीं से वह नदी बनी
jāhnavīthe Gaṅgā, Jāhnu's daughter — she is what came into being nominative; the verse leaves the verb out, and Viśvanātha supplies jātā, "came into being"जाह्नवी अर्थात् गंगा (प्रकट हो गई)
stanādri-patitaiḥ — fallen from the mountain of her breast; pīyūṣa-dyutibhiḥ — nectar-white; kṣīrotkaraiḥ — by floods of milk; jāhnavī [jātā] — the Gaṅgā has come to be
pīyūṣa-dyutibhiḥ — जिनकी चमक अमृत जैसी है; stanādri-patitaiḥ — स्तन रूपी पर्वत से गिरी हुई; kṣīrotkaraiḥ — क्षीर की उन राशियों के द्वारा; jāhnavī — जाह्नवी बन गई।
Milk pours from her breasts in floods, white as nectar. Her breast is the mountain; the milk is the river coming off it. That, says the speaker, is the Gaṅgā.
स्तन रूपी पर्वत से दूध की धाराएँ बह चलीं। उनकी चमक अमृत जैसी है। उन्हीं दूध-राशियों से जाह्नवी बन गई। श्लोक में क्रिया कही नहीं गई; विश्वनाथ 'जाता' जोड़ते हैं।
An udāharaṇa of vātsalya-rati appearing snehavat, "like sneha" — the second of the three grades named in the sthāyī verse at 3.4.52-53, after the premavat pair at 3.4.56-57. The lakṣaṇa it must show is the one given at 3.2.84: "sāndraś citta-dravaṁ kurvan premā sneha itīryate" — prema grown so thick that it melts the heart, and cannot bear even a moment's separation. Watch for the melting: in this verse the mother's body literally runs — milk and tears — because her son is not in front of her.

kālindī ca vilocanābja-janitair jātāñjana-śyāmalaiḥ |
kālindīthe Yamunā, the daughter of Mount Kalinda — the second river, and it too has come into being nominative, matched with jāhnavī in the previous line; the same unstated jātā carries overकालिन्दी अर्थात् यमुना (भी वैसे ही बन गई)
caand — a second river alongside the first, so that a confluence becomes possibleऔर
vilocanābja-janitaiḥproduced from the lotuses that are her eyes — the eyes are the source, the way a spring is the source of a stream vilocana-abja, karmadhāraya, "the eyes which are lotuses"; instrumental plural again, and the noun it agrees with is left unstated — Viśvanātha supplies jala-samūhaiḥ, "masses of water", i.e. her tearsनेत्र रूपी कमलों से उत्पन्न (जल-समूहों) के द्वारा
jātāñjana-śyāmalaiḥgone dark with the añjana they picked up on the way — the tears carry off her eye-black, and that is what makes this river the dark one jāta-añjana-śyāmala: "dark by the añjana that has come to be in them". Viśvanātha unfolds it as añjanena śyāmalaiḥ, a plain instrumental of causeजिनमें अंजन आ गया है, उसी अंजन के कारण जो श्याम हैं — उनके द्वारा
vilocanābja-janitaiḥ — born from the lotuses of her eyes; jātāñjana-śyāmalaiḥ — dark with the añjana in them; kālindī ca [jātā] — and the Yamunā too has come to be
kālindī — कालिन्दी; ca — और; vilocanābja-janitaiḥ — नेत्र रूपी कमलों से उत्पन्न; jātāñjana-śyāmalaiḥ — अंजन लग जाने से श्याम (जल-समूहों) के द्वारा।
Tears come out of her lotus eyes and carry her eye-black with them, so they run dark. White milk above, dark tears below: one river is the Gaṅgā, the other the Yamunā.
आँखें कमल हैं और उनसे जल बहा। उस जल में अंजन घुल गया, इसलिए वह श्याम हो गया। उसी श्याम जल से कालिन्दी बन गई। यहाँ भी 'जाता' पिछली पंक्ति से ही चला आता है, और जिस संज्ञा के ये विशेषण हैं वह कही नहीं गई — विश्वनाथ 'जलसमूहैः' जोड़ते हैं।
The two-river picture only works because the colours are right — Gaṅgā runs white, Yamunā runs dark. The verse gets the white from milk and the dark from añjana, so nothing has to be forced.
दो नदियों का यह चित्र तभी बनता है जब रंग ठीक बैठें — गंगा श्वेत बहती है और यमुना श्याम। श्वेत रंग दूध से मिल गया और श्याम रंग अंजन से; इसलिए कहीं कुछ खींचना नहीं पड़ता।

ārānmadhyama-vedim āpatitayoḥ klinnā tayoḥ saṅgame
ārānclose by, right there — they do not travel far before they land ārāt, with the -t assimilated before madhyama-; the word can mean either "near" or "far off", and since the falling is onto her own waist it has to be "near"पास ही में
madhyama-vedimonto the middle altar — and this is the word the whole double reading turns on, since both commentators glossed here give it twice accusative, the goal of āpatitayoḥ (ā-pat takes an accusative of where it falls). vedi is a raised altar; on one reading madhyama is her waist, on the other madhyama-vedi is Prayāgaमध्यम वेदी पर (गिरने का लक्ष्य); वेदी ऊँची वेदिका को कहते हैं
āpatitayoḥof the two that come falling down onto it — the two rivers, arriving at one place genitive dual of the past participle of ā-√pat, agreeing with tayoḥ at the end of the lineगिरी हुई उन दोनों की
klinnādrenched, soaked through — and Viśvanātha reads that wetness as a bath nominative feminine, describing the woman addressed; it waits for vṛttāsi in the next line to become a full predicateभीगी हुई (तू) — अभी वाक्य पूरा नहीं, अगली पंक्ति की प्रतीक्षा है
tayoḥ saṅgameat the meeting-place of those two — the technical word for where two rivers join locative of place. saṅgama is exactly the word used of the Gaṅgā-Yamunā confluence at Prayāga, which is what makes the second reading availableउन दोनों के संगम पर
ārāt — close by; madhyama-vedim — onto the middle altar; āpatitayoḥ tayoḥ — of those two that come falling; saṅgame — at their confluence; klinnā — drenched
ārān — पास ही; madhyama-vedim — मध्यम वेदी पर; āpatitayoḥ — गिरी हुई उन दोनों के; klinnā — भीगी हुई; tayoḥ saṅgame — उन दोनों के संगम पर।
Both streams come down close by, onto the middle altar — her waist. Where the two meet, she is soaked.
This is the hinge of the śleṣa. Read one way, the "middle altar" is the middle of her body and the confluence is where milk and tears run together on her. Read the other way, madhyama-vedi is Prayāga, the earth's middle altar, and the confluence is the Gaṅgā-Yamunā saṅgama — so being "drenched" becomes taking the bath there. Both Jīva and Viśvanātha keep both readings; neither drops one.

vṛttāsi vraja-rājñi tat-suta-mukha-prekṣāṁ sphuṭaṁ vāñchasi ||
vṛttāsiyou have ended up — it completes klinnā from the last line: you have ended up drenched vṛttā asi, the participle of √vṛt with "you are"; it says a state has come about, not that she did somethingतू हो गई है — अर्थात् यह दशा बन गई, तूने कुछ किया नहीं
vraja-rājñiO queen of Vraja — she is addressed by her Vraja title, as a mother of that place, not by anything grander vocative feminineहे व्रजरानी!
tat-suta-mukha-prekṣāṁthe sight of that son's face — that is the thing she is said to want accusative, the object of vāñchasi. Viśvanātha cuts the compound differently: he takes tat by itself as tasmāt, "therefore", leaving suta-mukha-prekṣām, "the sight of your son's face". Both cuts are live in the lineउसके पुत्र के मुख के दर्शन को (चाहने का कर्म)
sphuṭaṁplainly, and there is no hiding it — the speaker is saying the wish is written on her adverbial accusative going with vāñchasi; this is where the teasing sitsसाफ-साफ, खुलकर
vāñchasiyou want it, you are longing for it second person singular present — the verse is spoken straight at herतू चाहती है
vraja-rājñi — O queen of Vraja; klinnā vṛttā asi — you have ended up drenched; sphuṭaṁ — plainly; tat-suta-mukha-prekṣām — the sight of that son's face; vāñchasi — you want
vṛttāsi — तू हो गई है; vraja-rājñi — हे व्रजरानी; tat-suta-mukha-prekṣāṁ — उसके पुत्र के मुख के दर्शन को; sphuṭaṁ — साफ-साफ; vāñchasi — तू चाहती है।
So, queen of Vraja, you have ended up soaked. And it is obvious what you want: a look at your boy's face.
The verse is a tease, and the tease is the proof of sneha. Somebody bathing at Prayāga's confluence is understood to want darśana of the Lord; this mother, drenched at her own confluence, wants darśana of the same person — but as her son's face. The śāstric motive and the mother's craving turn out to be one act.

sva-putra-darśanotkaṇṭhayābecause she was aching to see her own son — that is the real reason she is on the road instrumental of cause, set against vyājena: pretext on one side, motive on the other. utkaṇṭhā is the ache of the neck craned to look, longingक्योंकि अपने पुत्र के दर्शन की उत्कण्ठा थी — गला उठाकर देखने की वही तड़प

Jīva sets the scene. There is a pilgrimage for a solar eclipse, and the queen of Vraja goes along — but the eclipse is only her excuse. What is actually driving her is the ache to see her son. As she is setting out, a woman ascetic who knew her from before speaks this verse to her.
सूर्यग्रहण की यात्रा तो बहाना था। भीतर कारण यह था कि अपने पुत्र के दर्शन की उत्कण्ठा थी। इसी से व्रजेश्वरी चल पड़ीं। उसी समय किसी तपस्विनी ने, जो पहले से उनकी परिचित थी, यह बात कही।
Two instrumentals doing opposite jobs in one breath: vyājena gives the reason she can say out loud, utkaṇṭhayā the reason she has. That gap is the sneha. The speaker is left unnamed — "some ascetic woman" — so the decode leaves her unnamed too. Viśvanātha gives this same setting below with one word changed.

kṣīraṁ dugdhaṁ jalaṁ ca |
kṣīraṁthe verse's word kṣīra — the one word the picture hangs on'क्षीर' शब्द का अर्थ —
dugdhaṁmeans milk — what actually comes from her breastsदूध
jalaṁ caand it also means water — which is what a river is made of; the ca is not adding a second thing but a second sense of the same word ca here yokes two glosses of one lemma, not two itemsऔर जल भी — 'च' यहाँ एक ही शब्द के दो अर्थ जोड़ता है, दो वस्तुएँ नहीं
kṣīram — the word kṣīra; dugdham — milk; jalam ca — and also water
kṣīraṁ — क्षीर; dugdhaṁ — दूध; jalaṁ ca — और जल।
One word, two meanings. kṣīra is milk — so it is her breast-milk. kṣīra is also water — so it is a river. Jīva does not choose between them; the verse needs both at once.
'क्षीर' का अर्थ दूध भी है और जल भी। यही दो अर्थ जीव गोस्वामी तीन शब्दों में रख देते हैं।
This is the śleṣa stated in three words. Because kṣīra covers both milk and water, the same phrase kṣīrotkaraiḥ can be read as floods of her milk and as floods of river-water, and the whole Gaṅgā picture stands up without any strain.
तीन शब्दों में सारा श्लेष कह दिया गया। 'क्षीर' दूध और जल दोनों को समेटता है, इसलिए वही 'क्षीरोत्करैः' माता के दूध की बाढ़ भी पढ़ा जा सकता है और नदी के जल की बाढ़ भी — और गंगा वाला पूरा चित्र बिना किसी खींचतान के खड़ा हो जाता है।

madhyamo madhya-bhāgaḥ sa eva vedis tāṁ, pakṣe madhyama-vediṁ prayāgam ||
madhyamo madhya-bhāgaḥmadhyama means the middle part — the middle of her body, her waist'मध्यम' अर्थात् मध्यभाग
sa eva vedisand that middle part is itself the altar — the waist is not like an altar, it is what the word vedi names here eva makes the identification tight: madhyama-vedi is read as a karmadhāraya, "the middle which is the altar"वही वेदी है — 'एव' से दोनों को एक ही कर दिया गया
tāṁand that is what the verse's accusative points at accusative feminine, resupplying the case of madhyama-vedim after the gloss has been given in the nominativeउसी को — अर्थ प्रथमा में कह चुकने के बाद श्लोक की द्वितीया फिर लौटा दी
pakṣeon the other reading — Jīva now turns the same words over locative, "in the [second] option"; the standard marker that a second reading is being kept open, not that the first is droppedदूसरे पक्ष में
madhyama-vediṁ prayāgammadhyama-vedi is Prayāga — the middle altar of the earth accusative in apposition, matching the verse's own caseमध्यमवेदी अर्थात् प्रयाग को
madhyamaḥ — madhyama; madhya-bhāgaḥ — the middle part; saḥ eva vediḥ — that itself is the altar; tām — that is the accusative; pakṣe — on the other reading; madhyama-vedim — the middle altar; prayāgam — is Prayāga
madhyamo madhya-bhāgaḥ — 'मध्यम' अर्थात् मध्यभाग; sa eva vedis — वही वेदी; tāṁ — उसको; pakṣe — दूसरे पक्ष में; madhyama-vediṁ prayāgam — मध्यमवेदी अर्थात् प्रयाग को।
First reading: madhyama is the middle of her body, and that middle is the altar. Second reading: madhyama-vedi is Prayāga, the earth's middle altar. Jīva sets them side by side with pakṣe and leaves both standing.
एक अर्थ में 'मध्यम' शरीर का मध्यभाग है, और वही वेदी है। श्लोक में जो 'मध्यमवेदिम्' है, वह इसी को कहता है। दूसरे पक्ष में मध्यमवेदी प्रयाग है। 'पक्षे' कहकर दूसरा पाठ खुला रखा गया है, पहला छोड़ा नहीं गया।
Both readings run at once, and the verse needs them to. On her body, two streams meet at her waist. On the map, two rivers meet at Prayāga. Neither Jīva nor Viśvanātha picks a winner.
दोनों पाठ साथ-साथ चलते हैं, और श्लोक को दोनों चाहिए। देह पर दो धाराएँ कमर पर मिलती हैं; मानचित्र पर दो नदियाँ प्रयाग में मिलती हैं। न जीव किसी एक को जिताते हैं, न विश्वनाथ।

vacanamis the speechयह वचन है
sūryoparāga-yātrā-vyājena — on the pretext of the eclipse pilgrimage; sva-putra-darśanotkaṇṭhayā — out of longing to see her own son; vrajantyāṁ vrajeśvaryāṁ — while the queen of Vraja was setting out; kasyāścit paricitatara-tāpasyāḥ vacanam — these are the words of some rather closely acquainted ascetic woman

Viśvanātha gives the same setting. The eclipse pilgrimage is her excuse; the longing to see her son is the reason. As she sets out, an ascetic woman speaks the verse to her.
सूर्यग्रहण की यात्रा बहाना था; भीतर पुत्र-दर्शन की उत्कण्ठा थी। उसी उत्कण्ठा से व्रजेश्वरी चलीं। तब किसी तपस्विनी ने, जो उनसे और भी अधिक परिचित थी, यह कहा।
One word differs from Jīva's setting: Jīva has paricita-cara, "formerly acquainted", Viśvanātha paricitatara, "more closely acquainted". The two are left as they stand — one puts the acquaintance in the past, the other makes it close. Either way she is familiar enough to tease the queen of Vraja to her face, which is what the verse requires.

Her body is the mountain. Fluid comes pouring off it in floods, and out of that the Gaṅgā is born. And kṣīra, he adds, is milk and is also water — so the same floods are her milk and the river at once.
शरीर रूपी पर्वत से जो क्षीर-राशियाँ गिरीं, अर्थात् द्रव के समूह — उन्हीं से जाह्नवी बन गई। और 'क्षीर' का अर्थ दूध भी है, जल भी। यहाँ 'रस' साधारण अर्थ में द्रव है; इस ग्रन्थ का पारिभाषिक रस नहीं।
Note what Viśvanātha changes: the verse says stanādri, the breast-mountain; he glosses it as tanu-rūpa-parvata, the body as mountain. He also fills in the missing verb, jātā, which the verse only implies — and the same jātā then serves the Yamunā in his next sentence.
देखिए विश्वनाथ क्या बदलते हैं: श्लोक में 'स्तनाद्रि' है अर्थात् स्तन रूपी पर्वत, और वे उसे 'तनुरूपपर्वत' अर्थात् शरीर रूपी पर्वत कहते हैं। साथ ही जो क्रिया श्लोक में केवल अपेक्षित थी, उसे 'जाता' कहकर भर देते हैं — और वही 'जाता' आगे यमुना के लिए भी काम आती है।

netra-kamala-janitaiḥ — born from the lotuses of her eyes; añjanena śyāmalaiḥ — dark because of the añjana; jala-samūhaiḥ — by masses of water; jātā yamunā ca — and the Yamunā came to be
netra-kamala-janitaiḥ — नेत्र रूपी कमलों से उत्पन्न; añjanena śyāmalaiḥ — अंजन से श्याम; jala-samūhaiḥ — जल-समूहों के द्वारा; jātā yamunā ca — और यमुना बन गई।
Now the second river. Water pours from her lotus eyes, and the añjana in it makes it dark. Out of that the Yamunā is born.
आँख रूपी कमलों से जो जल निकला, वह अंजन के कारण श्याम था। उन्हीं जल-समूहों से यमुना बन गई। यहाँ 'विलोचन' के स्थान पर 'नेत्र' और 'अब्ज' के स्थान पर 'कमल' है — केवल शब्द बदला, अर्थ वही।
He builds the two sentences to match: mountain-fluid-Gaṅgā, then eyes-water-Yamunā. The verse never says "tears" — it only gives adjectives, "born from the eyes" and "dark". jala-samūhaiḥ is Viśvanātha's supplied noun.
वे दोनों वाक्य आमने-सामने गढ़ते हैं: पर्वत-द्रव-गंगा, फिर नेत्र-जल-यमुना। श्लोक में 'आँसू' कहीं नहीं कहा गया — वहाँ केवल विशेषण हैं, 'नेत्रों से उत्पन्न' और 'श्याम'। 'जलसमूहैः' वह संज्ञा है जिसे विश्वनाथ स्वयं जोड़ते हैं।

madhyamo madhya-deśaḥmadhyama means the middle region — the middle of her body'मध्यम' अर्थात् मध्य का प्रदेश
sa eva vedisand that middle is itself the altar eva makes the identification: madhyama-vedi read as "the middle which is the altar"वही वेदी है — 'एव' से पहचान पक्की कर दी गई
tāṁthat is what the verse's accusative refers to accusative feminine, restoring the case of madhyama-vedimउसी को — श्लोक की द्वितीया लौटा दी गई
pakṣeon the other reading — the second sense is now opened, not substituted the standing marker of a second reading held open alongside the firstदूसरे पक्ष में
madhyama-vediṁ prayāgammadhyama-vedi is Prayāga, the middle altar of the earthमध्यमवेदी अर्थात् प्रयाग को
madhyamaḥ — madhyama; madhya-deśaḥ — the middle region; saḥ eva vediḥ — that itself is the altar; tām — that is the accusative; pakṣe — on the other reading; madhyama-vedim — the middle altar; prayāgam — is Prayāga
madhyamo madhya-deśaḥ — 'मध्यम' अर्थात् मध्यप्रदेश; sa eva vedis — वही वेदी; tāṁ — उसको; pakṣe — दूसरे पक्ष में; madhyama-vediṁ prayāgam — मध्यमवेदी अर्थात् प्रयाग को।
Same two readings as Jīva's. One: the middle of her body is the altar. Two: madhyama-vedi is Prayāga. He keeps both.
एक अर्थ में 'मध्यम' देह का मध्य प्रदेश है और वही वेदी है। श्लोक की 'मध्यमवेदिम्' उसी को कहती है। दूसरे पक्ष में मध्यमवेदी प्रयाग है। यहाँ भी दूसरा पाठ खुला रखा गया है।
Viśvanātha writes madhya-deśa, "the middle region", where Jīva writes madhya-bhāga, "the middle part" — the same place named two ways, left as each has it. What matters is that the second reading, Prayāga, is what his closing sentence then argues from.
जहाँ जीव 'मध्यभाग' लिखते हैं, वहाँ विश्वनाथ 'मध्यदेश' — एक ही स्थान के दो नाम, दोनों जैसे हैं वैसे ही रहने दिए गए। असली बात यह है कि दूसरा पाठ, प्रयाग वाला, ही वह आधार है जिस पर उनका अन्तिम वाक्य युक्ति खड़ी करता है।

This one substitution turns a wet body into a completed ritual act, and the rest of the argument runs on itतू भीगी हुई अर्थात् स्नान किए हुए हो गई है
tat tasmāttat here means "therefore" — he cuts it off the compound and makes it the connective of the argument a re-parsing of the verse: instead of tat-suta-mukha- ("that son's face"), he reads tat = tasmāt and leaves suta-mukha-prekṣām, "the sight of your son's face"'तत्' का अर्थ 'तस्मात्' — इसलिए

he vraja-rājñi — O queen of Vraja; āpatitayoḥ tayoḥ gaṅgā-yamunayoḥ saṅgame — at the confluence of those two falling rivers, Gaṅgā and Yamunā; tvaṁ klinnā snātā vṛttā asi — you have ended up drenched, that is, you have bathed; tat tasmāt — therefore; śrī-kṛṣṇa-mukha-darśanam vāñchasi — you want to see Śrī Kṛṣṇa's face; bhagavad-darśana-vāñchayā eva lokāḥ prayāge snānam kurvanti iti prasiddheḥ — because it is common knowledge that people bathe at Prayāga only out of a wish to see the Lord
Viśvanātha reads the close as a small argument. Queen of Vraja, you are drenched where those two rivers meet — which is to say, you have bathed at the confluence. Therefore you want to see Śrī Kṛṣṇa's face. Why does that follow? Because everyone knows why people bathe at Prayāga: for one reason only, to get the sight of the Lord.
The reasoning runs on the second reading of madhyama-vedi. Take her waist as Prayāga, and her being wet counts as the Prayāga bath; then the well-known motive for that bath — darśana of the Lord — must be her motive too. The eva in bhagavad-darśana-vāñchayaiva carries the weight: if that were merely one reason among several, the inference would not close. And the joke is the vātsalya point. The pilgrim's motive and the mother's are the same act — she wants the face of the Lord, and the face of the Lord is her boy's.
