devakyā vivṛta-prasū-caritayāpy unmṛjyamānānane
devakyāby Devakī instrumental: the agent of the passive unmṛjyamāna- in the compound at the end of the lineदेवकी के द्वारा — पंक्ति के अन्त में आए 'उन्मृज्यमान' का कर्ता यही हैं
vivṛta-prasū-caritayāwho was now openly acting out the part of the mother who bore himजिसने जननी का आचरण खोलकर प्रकट कर दिया, ऐसी
apieven though — she was doing it right there in the openतो भी — यानी ऐसी देवकी के रहते हुए भी
unmṛjyamāna-ānanewhen his face was being wiped locative; it agrees with govinde … āgate in line 3 — the whole first half is one long 'when…' clauseजब उनका मुख पोंछा जा रहा था — यह सप्तमी तीसरी पंक्ति के 'गोविन्दे …
govinde (L3) — when Govinda; devakyā — by Devakī; vivṛta-prasū-caritayā api — who was even now openly acting the part of his birth-mother; unmṛjyamāna-ānane — had his face being wiped
Set the scene. Devakī is there, and she is no longer hiding anything — she is behaving in the open as the mother who gave him birth. She is wiping Kṛṣṇa's face. Note the 'even though': the verse is stacking up everything that could have wounded the Vraja parents.
Introduced by yathā vā, 'or again, as in this' — a second udāharaṇa for the same heading as 3.4.56, premavat: vātsalya-rati raised to the stage of prema. Both illustrations are set at Kurukṣetra.

bhūyobhiḥby very many of themबहुत-से (लोगों के द्वारा)
vasudeva-nandanatayāas being 'the son of Vasudeva' instrumental of the form the shouting took: they proclaimed him under that description'यह वसुदेव का पुत्र है' — इसी रूप में; घोषणा किस रूप में हुई, वह यही तृतीया बताती है
apieven though — this too was going onभी
udghūṣyamāṇewhen he was being loudly proclaimed second locative in the same 'when…' clause, again agreeing with govindeजब ऊँचे स्वर से घोषित किए जा रहे थे — यह भी उसी 'जब…'
janaiḥby the people standing aboutलोगों के द्वारा
bhūyobhiḥ janaiḥ — by very many people; vasudeva-nandanatayā api — even as 'the son of Vasudeva'; udghūṣyamāṇe — when he was being loudly proclaimed
And the crowd is shouting it out. Many voices, and all of them calling him Vasudeva's son. So the birth-mother's claim is public and the crowd's verdict is public. Two blows, both landing where Nanda and Yaśodā can hear.

govinde mihira-grahotsukatayā kṣetraṁ kuror āgate
govindewhen Govinda the head word of the locative absolute that lines 1–3 have been buildingगोविन्द के — यही उस सप्तमी का मुख्य पद है, जिसे पहली दो पंक्तियाँ बना रही थीं
mihira-graha-utsukatayāout of the eagerness the solar eclipse had stirred in him instrumental of cause; mihira-graha, 'the seizing of the sun', is the eclipse that drew everyone to Kurukṣetraक्योंकि सूर्यग्रहण की उत्सुकता थी — 'मिहिर-ग्रह' अर्थात् सूर्य का ग्रहण, जिसके कारण सब कुरुक्षेत्र आए थे
kṣetraṁ kuroḥto the field of Kuru — Kurukṣetraकुरुक्षेत्र में
āgatehad comeआ जाने पर
govinde — when Govinda; mihira-graha-utsukatayā — out of eagerness stirred by the solar eclipse; kuroḥ kṣetram — to Kurukṣetra; āgate — had come
Here is the main clause of the setting. Govinda has come to Kurukṣetra, and the eclipse is what brought him — or rather, what the eclipse made possible. The commentators will press on that word 'eagerness': eager for what?

premā vallava-nāthayor atitarām ullāsam evāyayau ||

vallava-nāthayoḥof the two chiefs of the cowherds genitive dual; the dual is the point — the two of them together, husband and wifeगोपों के दोनों स्वामियों का — षष्ठी द्विवचन; द्विवचन ही यहाँ मर्म है, वे दोनों साथ-साथ, पति और पत्नी
atitarāmbeyond all measureअत्यन्त

vallava-nāthayoḥ premā — the love of the two cowherd chiefs; atitarām ullāsam eva — only to a swelling delight, beyond all measure; āyayau — came
Now the payoff. With all of that in front of them, the love of the two cowherd chiefs did just one thing: it swelled. And it swelled past measure. The eva is doing the work — it rules out every other reaction the situation invited.

vallava-nāthayoḥ milana-sukhenabecause of the joy of the meeting with the two cowherd chiefs instrumental of cause: the joy is what produced the tearsक्योंकि गोपों के दोनों स्वामियों के मिलन का सुख हुआ — यही सुख आँसुओं का कारण है
tad-ānanasyaof that face of hisउनके मुख के
aśru-liptatāmthat it was smeared over with tearsआँसुओं से भीगे होने को

unmṛjyamāna-ānane iti — by the phrase 'when his face was being wiped'; vallava-nāthayoḥ milana-sukhena — because of the joy of meeting the two cowherd chiefs; tad-ānanasya aśru-liptatām — that his face was smeared with tears; vyañjayati — he suggests
Why does the verse bother to say his face was being wiped? Because there was something on it. Tears. And Jīva names the cause: the joy of meeting Nanda and Yaśodā. Rūpa does not say 'he wept' — he lets one wiping hand say it. That is vyañjanā, suggestion.
vyañjayati is the technical verb of suggestion (vyañjanā) in Sanskrit poetics: the poet supplies a detail and the sense arrives on its own. Here the detail is the wiping; the suggested sense is that Kṛṣṇa wept on meeting his Vraja parents.

The eclipse was the excuse, not the reason. Jīva puts the actual thought in Kṛṣṇa's mind: 'Nanda and Yaśodā will be there too.' So the eagerness in the verse is longing — the ache to see those two faces. Read that way, the whole journey to Kurukṣetra is a son going to meet his parents.

Jīva stops and asks the obvious question. Everything in the scene should have crushed that love. Why did it swell instead? He announces that he will now give the cause.

This is the answer. Love does not argue slowly; it produces a counter-argument on the spot. Their own feeling for the boy threw up a reason against every piece of evidence in front of them. Jīva's eva insists that this — and nothing else — is the cause of the swelling. What that reasoning was, he spells out next.

Jīva sets the information situation. Before Kaṁsa died, Nanda and the Vraja people had heard nothing about a switched child. After Kaṁsa died, the Yādavas talked — but they talked carefully. All they produced in public was the old sky-voice: 'her eighth child will kill you.' They did not say plainly that the babies had been exchanged, because if that came out, taking Kṛṣṇa back would look like theft. And they kept quiet about Nārada's part in poisoning Kaṁsa against them — the Harivaṁśa itself only hints at the exchange rather than stating it. Given that much and no more, says Jīva, here is how Nanda's side reasoned.
bheda here is double-edged: the 'split' of the parentage (which child belongs to whom) and the 'split' Nārada engineered between Kaṁsa and the Yādavas. Jīva uses the one word for both, and the sentence turns on the fact that the Vraja people had heard of neither.

Why cited: Cited to knock out the one piece of public evidence the Yādavas had. If the eighth-child oracle was already falsified, it cannot compel the conclusion that this boy is Devakī's son — which is exactly the opening Nanda's love needs.

yadi ca atra kim api sandarbhāntaram syāt — and if there were some other account here; tadā — then; sarvatra avañcaka-śīlena nirupādhi-bandhu-bhāva-bhāvitena vasudevena — by Vasudeva, who never deceives and whose friendship has no conditions on it; [the following words would not be spoken]
Now a test case. Suppose the story ran some other way — suppose Vasudeva knew the boy was his and was playing along. Then look at the man: he never deceives anyone, and his affection for Nanda has no calculation in it. Would such a man have said what he said? The quotation comes next, and the verdict after it.

Vasudeva congratulating Nanda: 'Brother, what luck — old, childless, you had given up hoping, and now you have a son.' Said plainly, warmly, with no reservation.
Why cited: Adduced as the test of the counterfactual just raised: a man who never deceives would not speak these words to Nanda if he privately held the boy to be his own. So no rival account of the parentage fits Vasudeva's behaviour.

vasudevena (s8) — by Vasudeva; iti-ādikam — words such as these; na procyate — would not be spoken
That is the verdict. If any other account were true, Vasudeva could not have said such a thing. He is not a man who says what he does not mean. So the account Jīva has been building stands.

Garga had already told Nanda, in Vraja, that this son of his had once been born as Vasudeva's. So the Yādavas could have been repeating the same thing on their side. And they had a motive to keep it blurry — they wanted him back. So they never sorted out which birth was being talked about, the old one or this one. They just kept saying the one useful sentence: he is ours.

bhavatu nāma tat — let that be; tat api vataḥ — even so; yadi yogyāḥ janāḥ sva-putre putravat ācaranti — if worthy people treat one's own son as their son; tadā pitroḥ sukham eva syāt — the parents feel only joy; kim uta — how much more; vasudeva-devakyau premṇā yābhyām abhinnau — when they are Vasudeva and Devakī, not different in prema from those two

Now Jīva grants the whole thing and turns it around. Suppose the Yādavas really are claiming him. Take the ordinary case first: when good people love your son as their own, you are not offended — you are pleased. Now raise it. These are Vasudeva and Devakī, and in love they are not two hearts apart from Nanda and Yaśodā; they are one. So the claim, far from wounding, feeds the joy. That is why the prema swelled.

And Kṛṣṇa was working from the same thought. To Nanda he said: we will come and see you — after we have taken care of our well-wishers' happiness. Not a refusal. A sequence, with a reason built into it.
Why cited: Cited to show that Kṛṣṇa himself operated on the policy Jīva has just described: the Yādava side has to be kept happy first, and the Vraja parents are asked to bear the delay.

Read the hint under Kṛṣṇa's words. As long as I have to keep Vasudeva and the others happy, you must keep your claim to me buried. Say nothing. That is gāmbhīrya — depth, holding it in. The Vraja parents' silence at Kurukṣetra is not weakness; it is obedience to that request.
gāmbhīrya is literally 'depth'. In practice it means keeping a strong feeling entirely inside and letting nothing show — here, Nanda and Yaśodā making no public claim on Kṛṣṇa while the Yādavas assert theirs.

One passage looks like a counter-example. At Kurukṣetra Devakī says to Yaśodā, of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, 'these two never saw their parents' — which sounds like a claim staked in public, and a hurtful one. Jīva's answer: she was not thinking. Her son, gone for years, was standing in front of her that instant. Words spoken in that state are not a considered position.

Viśvanātha unpacks the compound first. vivṛta means out in the open, and what is out in the open is Devakī's behaviour as birth-mother — the unspoken sentence behind it being, 'he came out of my body, mine.' Then the wiping: Kṛṣṇa's face was wet with tears, and the tears came from the joy of meeting Nanda and Yaśodā.
Jīva at s1 keeps the verse's own word vallava-nāthayoḥ, 'the two cowherd chiefs'; Viśvanātha names them Nanda and Yaśodā and adds the sentence he hears inside vivṛta-prasū-caritayā, 'he was born from my own womb'. The two decodes are not merged here.

Viśvanātha first says plainly what mihira-graha is: the sun's eclipse. Then the same reading as before — the eclipse was the occasion, and the real motive was the thought that Nanda and Yaśodā would be there. The verse's 'eagerness' is the longing to see those two.
