Nanda, big-hearted, took his own son up in his arms. The boy had gone and come back — he had as good as died and returned.
An udāharaṇa of vātsalya-rati, the parental love that is the sthāyi-bhāva of this laharī, quoted from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.6.43 as the lead-in says ("tatra vātsalya-ratir, yathā śrī-daśame"). What makes it vātsalya and not something else: the possessive sva-putram, the picking-up, and the head-smelling in the next line — all gestures only a parent makes.

mūrdhny upāghrāya paramāṁ mudaṁ lebhe kurūdvaha ||
mūrdhnion his head — that is the spot locative marking where the smelling happensसिर पर — सप्तमी; सूँघना कहाँ हुआ, यह बताती है
upāghrāyahaving smelled him there — the parent's own gesture of love, not a kiss but the sniff at the crown of a child's head gerund, upa + ā + √ghrā; it follows ādāya from the first line — pick up, then smellसूँघकर — यह 'आदाय' के बाद आता है: पहले उठाया, फिर सूँघा
paramāmthe highest there is — nothing beyond itपरम, सबसे बढ़कर — 'मुदम्' का विशेषण
mudamjoy, gladness — the thing he gotआनन्द को, हर्ष को — कर्म
lebhehe got it, it came to him — the joy arrived, he did not manufacture it perfect middle of √labh; the middle voice keeps the gain with the subject, for himselfपा लिया — आत्मनेपद, अतः वह लाभ अपने ही लिए हुआ
kurūdvahaO best of the Kurus — the speaker turns and addresses the listener vocative; "you who carry the Kuru line forward"हे कुरुवंश को आगे बढ़ानेवाले — सम्बोधन, श्रोता से कहा जा रहा है
kurūdvaha — O best of the Kurus; mūrdhni — on his head; upāghrāya — having smelled him; paramām mudam — the highest joy; lebhe — he got
He smelled him on the head, and got the highest joy there is. O best of the Kurus.
mūrdhni upāghrāya, smelling a child's head, is the standard śāstric gesture of parental love — the physical mark by which vātsalya is recognized. Note also what the verse does not say: no reasoning, no reflection. He picks the boy up, smells his head, and the joy simply arrives (lebhe). That immediacy is the rati.
