L1example
śikhaṇḍa-kṛta-śekharaḥ phaṇa-paṭīṁ kaṭīre dadhat
śikhaṇḍa-kṛta-śekharaḥhe has made a peacock feather into his crest-ornament bahuvrīhi in the nominative, agreeing with sutaḥ in L4 — 'he whose head-piece is made of a peacock plume'; the whole verse is one long description hanging on that far-off subjectजिसका शिरोभूषण मोरपंख से बनाया गया है — वही (बहुव्रीहि, प्रथमा; यह विशेषण चौथी पंक्ति के 'सुतः' पर जाकर टिकता है)
phaṇa-paṭīmthe phaṇa-paṭī — the stitched cloth that flares like a snake's hood accusative, object of dadhat; Jīva at 3.4.31–32 describes the phaṇa-paṭī as a stitched cloth, hood-shaped in front and like a small dhaṭī behind, worn tucked between the legsफणपटी नामक वस्त्र को (द्वितीया — 'धारण किए हुए' का कर्म)
kaṭīreround his hips locative of place — where the cloth sitsकमर पर — वहीं वह वस्त्र बँधा हुआ है
dadhatwearing it present participle, nominative, still describing the son; it carries over into L2 and governs laguḍīm there tooधारण किए हुए (वर्तमान कृदन्त, प्रथमा; यही क्रिया दूसरी पंक्ति की लकुटी पर भी चलती है)
sutaḥ [from L4] — the son; śikhaṇḍa-kṛta-śekharaḥ — with a peacock feather made into his crest; kaṭīre — at his hips; phaṇa-paṭīm — the hood-shaped cloth; dadhat — wearing
śikhaṇḍa-kṛta-śekharaḥ — जिसका शिरोभूषण मोरपंख से बना है; phaṇa-paṭīm — फणपटी नामक वस्त्र को; kaṭīre — कमर पर; dadhat — धारण किए हुए।
Start with how he is dressed. A peacock feather is his crown. Round his hips is the phaṇa-paṭī, the little cloth that flares out in front like a serpent's hood. Nothing here is royal — this is a cowherd boy's kit, item by item.
उसके सिर पर मोरपंख का शेखर सजा है। कमर पर फणपटी नामक वस्त्र बँधा है। वह इसे धारण किए हुए है। यह पूरा वर्णन अभी अधर में लटका है — 'कौन' है, यह चौथी पंक्ति में खुलेगा।
An udāharaṇa. The verse illustrates the vibhūṣaṇa and the ceṣṭita just listed at 3.4.31–32 for this stage of Kṛṣṇa's boyhood: the phaṇa-paṭī, the light cane, guarding the calves near Vraja, and playing with his agemates. Read the two together and every item in this verse is checked off the earlier list.
यह उदाहरण है। तीसरे लहरी के 3.4.31–32 में इस बाल्य-अवस्था के लिए जो विभूषण और जो चेष्टाएँ गिनाई गई थीं, यह श्लोक उन्हीं को दिखाता है — फणपटी, हलकी लकुटी, व्रज के पास बछड़ों की रखवाली, और समवयस्कों के साथ खेल। दोनों को साथ पढ़िए, तो इस श्लोक की हर वस्तु पहले की सूची में मिल जाती है।

kare ca laguḍīṁ laghuṁ savayasāṁ kulair āvṛtaḥ |
kare caand in his hand locative; ca adds this second thing he is carrying to the cloth of L1 — one dadhat serves bothऔर हाथ में (सप्तमी; 'च' पहली पंक्ति के वस्त्र के साथ यह दूसरी वस्तु जोड़ता है — 'धारण किए हुए' एक ही क्रिया दोनों को सँभालती है)
laguḍīṁ laghuma light little herding-stick accusative; laguḍī is the small cane, laghum agrees with it — the stick is small and the adjective insists it is light too, sized for a boyछोटी-सी लकुटी को, और वह भी हलकी (द्वितीया; 'लघुम्' उसी लकुटी का विशेषण है — बालक के हाथ भर की)
savayasāmof the boys his own age genitive depending on kulaiḥ; sa-vayas = 'of the same age'समान आयु वाले साथियों के — यह 'झुंडों' से जुड़ता है (षष्ठी)
kulaiḥ āvṛtaḥhemmed in on all sides by whole crowds of them instrumental of agent with the past participle āvṛtaḥ; kulaiḥ is plural — not a few friends but troop after troopझुंडों से घिरा हुआ (तृतीया; 'कुलैः' बहुवचन है — दो-चार सखा नहीं, टोली पर टोली)
kare ca — and in his hand; laghum laguḍīm — a light stick; dadhat [from L1] — holding; savayasām kulaiḥ — by crowds of his agemates; āvṛtaḥ — surrounded
kare ca — और हाथ में; laguḍīṁ laghum — छोटी और हलकी लकुटी को; savayasām — समवयस्क साथियों के; kulaiḥ āvṛtaḥ — झुंडों से घिरा हुआ।
In his hand, a light little cane. Around him, crowd upon crowd of boys his own age. He is not standing alone anywhere in this picture — you have to find him inside the group.
हाथ में एक छोटी लकुटी है, वह भी हलकी। बालक के हाथ के अनुरूप। और चारों ओर उसकी अपनी उमर के साथियों की टोलियाँ घेरे खड़ी हैं। 'कुलैः' बहुवचन है — एक झुंड नहीं, कई।
laguḍī picks up the laghu-vetraka, 'light cane', named in the list of his ornaments at 3.4.31–32, and savayasām kulaiḥ picks up vayasyaiḥ saha khelanam, 'playing with agemates', from the same passage.
'लकुटी' शब्द 3.4.31–32 में उसके भूषणों की सूची में आए 'लघुवेत्रक' अर्थात् हलकी छड़ी को ही उठाता है, और 'सवयसां कुलैः' उसी प्रसंग के 'वयस्यैः सह खेलनम्' — समवयस्कों के साथ खेलना — को उठाता है।

avann iha śakṛt-karīn parisare vrajasya priye
avanlooking after them, keeping them safe present participle of av, nominative, again describing the son; av is the verb for a guardian's care, not merely for herdingरखवाली करता हुआ (अव् धातु का वर्तमान कृदन्त, प्रथमा — फिर उसी पुत्र का वर्णन; 'अव्' रक्षक की सँभाल का शब्द है, केवल हाँक ले जाने का नहीं)
iharight here — where we are standing and can see himयहीं, इसी जगह
śakṛt-karīnthe little dung-makers — that is, the calves accusative plural, object of avan; literally 'the makers of dung'. The word is a joke, and all three commentators stop to say plainly: it means the calves'गोबर करने वालों' को (द्वितीया बहुवचन, 'रखवाली करता हुआ' का कर्म; यह शब्द ठिठोली का है, और तीनों टीकाकार रुककर साफ कह देते हैं — इसका अर्थ है बछड़े)
parisare vrajasyaout on the edge of Vraja locative; parisara is the near outskirts — close enough to be watched from the houseव्रज के आसपास के निकट प्रान्त में (सप्तमी; 'परिसर' वह पास की सीमा है जो घर से ही दिख जाए)
priyemy dear vocative feminine — the whole verse is addressed to one woman; the commentators identify her as the speaker's own wifeहे प्रिये! (सम्बोधन, स्त्रीलिंग — पूरा श्लोक एक ही स्त्री से कहा जा रहा है; टीकाकार उसे वक्ता की अपनी पत्नी बताते हैं)
priye — my dear; iha — here; vrajasya parisare — on the outskirts of Vraja; śakṛt-karīn — the calves; avan — looking after
avan — रखवाली करता हुआ; iha — यहीं; śakṛt-karīn — 'गोबर करने वालों' अर्थात् बछड़ों को; parisare vrajasya — व्रज के निकट प्रान्त में; priye — हे प्रिये!
And what is he doing? Minding the calves, here on the edge of Vraja. The verse does not say 'calves'. It says 'the dung-makers' — the fond, rough village word for them. That earthiness is the point: the son is described in the plainest farmyard words his parents would actually use.
वह यहीं, व्रज के पास ही, 'गोबर करने वालों' की रखवाली कर रहा है। यह ठिठोली भरा नाम बछड़ों का है। 'अव्' धातु रक्षक की सँभाल कहती है, केवल चराना नहीं। और यह सारा वर्णन एक ही स्त्री से कहा जा रहा है — 'हे प्रिये!'
śakṛt-karin, 'dung-maker', is an everyday Sanskrit nickname for a calf, formed the way English forms 'breadwinner'. Here it does double duty — it names the animals and it keeps the whole scene at village level.
'शकृत्करिन्' अर्थात् 'गोबर बनाने वाला' संस्कृत में बछड़े का रोज़मर्रा का चलता हुआ नाम है — जैसे किसी को 'रोटी कमाने वाला' कह दें। यहाँ यह दो काम करता है — पशुओं का नाम भी बता देता है, और पूरे दृश्य को गाँव के ही स्तर पर टिकाए रखता है।

sutas tava kṛtārthayaty ahaha paśya netrāṇi naḥ ||
sutaḥ tavayour son — the subject the whole verse has been waiting for nominative; tava, 'yours', is said to the priyā of L3, so the speaker hands the boy over to her as hersतुम्हारा पुत्र (प्रथमा; 'तव' उसी प्रिया से कहा गया है, अतः वक्ता बालक को उसी का बताकर उसे सौंप देता है)
kṛtārthayatihe makes them get what they were made for denominative from kṛta-artha, 'one whose purpose is accomplished' — the main verb, with netrāṇi as its objectकृतार्थ कर रहा है (कृतार्थ से बना नामधातु — यही मुख्य क्रिया है, और 'नेत्रों को' इसका कर्म)
ahahaah! — the speaker breaks off in wonder an exclamation, not part of the syntax; it marks the moment the description gives way to feelingअहह! (यह उद्गार है, वाक्य-रचना का अंग नहीं; यहीं वर्णन छूटकर भाव आ जाता है)
paśyalook at him! imperative singular, addressed to the same 'my dear' — after four lines of describing, he simply tells her to lookदेखो (लोट्, एकवचन, उसी 'प्रिये' से — चार पंक्तियाँ वर्णन करने के बाद वह बस इतना कहता है, देखो)
netrāṇi naḥour eyes accusative, object of kṛtārthayati; naḥ is plural — he speaks for everyone watching, not only for himselfहमारे नेत्रों को (द्वितीया, 'कृतार्थ कर रहा है' का कर्म; 'नः' बहुवचन है — वह अकेले अपनी नहीं, सब देखने वालों की ओर से कहता है)
tava sutaḥ — your son; naḥ netrāṇi — our eyes; kṛtārthayati — makes fulfilled; ahaha — ah!; paśya — look!
sutaḥ tava — तुम्हारा पुत्र; kṛtārthayati — कृतार्थ कर रहा है; ahaha — अहह!; paśya — देखो; netrāṇi naḥ — हमारे नेत्रों को।
Now the sentence lands. Your son. He makes our eyes worth having. Eyes were given to us for something, and this is it. Then he stops describing altogether — ah, just look at him.
तुम्हारा पुत्र हमारे नेत्रों को कृतार्थ कर रहा है। अहह! देखो तो सही। 'नः' बहुवचन है — वह अपनी ही नहीं, सब देखने वालों की आँखों की बात कह रहा है।
The word order is the teaching. Three lines of ornament, stick, friends and calves come first, and only in the last line do you learn whose son this is and who is watching. You see the scene before you are told how to feel about it.
यहाँ शब्दों का क्रम ही शिक्षा है। पहले तीन पंक्तियों में भूषण, लकुटी, सखा और बछड़े आते हैं; और किसका पुत्र है तथा कौन देख रहा है — यह अन्तिम पंक्ति में ही खुलता है। पहले दृश्य दिखता है, फिर बताया जाता है कि उस पर क्या भाव करना है।

Jīva sets the scene. The boy is late coming home. His father notices, climbs to the top of the roof pavilion to look out, and spots him. His mother meanwhile is frantic. So the verse is what the father says, from the roof, to his agitated wife. That fixes everything the verse leaves open: priye is his wife, tava sutaḥ is their boy, and paśya is 'come and see, he is fine'.

The printed reading svar-bhāryām ativaryātivyagrām is uncertain in the middle. sva-bhāryām, 'his own wife', and ati-vyagrām, 'extremely agitated', are secure; what sits between them is not. Viśvanātha's corresponding sentence reads sva-bhāryām bhara-vyagrām.

Viśvanātha frames the verse the same way. The son is late; the father climbs the roof pavilion, sees him, and speaks to his wife. Her state he puts as bhara-vyagrām — agitation carried like a weight.
