An udāharaṇa of madhyama-kaumāra, the middle stage of childhood defined at 3.4.25 ('kaumāre sati madhyame'), introduced here by the lead-in 'yathā—'. Each phrase of the verse picks up one item of that definition: the locks at the eye-line, sweet speech, pierced ears, crawling, slight nakedness.

Jīva takes the first line as one long epithet and unties it. The swinging hair covers the brow-slopes, and he adds what that means: the strip of face just under the brows. The eyes are restless there, under the hair. Then he unties the second epithet the same way: the ear-holes are new and are opening out. Both are resolved as 'him whose…', so both hang on tanayam in the last line.

The definition verse said 'crawling and so on'. Jīva asks what the 'and so on' was, and answers: walking about on the feet. Then he shows how Rūpa Gosvāmī illustrates both with one phrase, alaghu-racita-riṅgam. One phrase, two duties — so the next two sentences give two senses of it, one for each duty.
लक्षण-श्लोक में 'रिङ्गणादि' कहा गया था। जीव गोस्वामी उसके 'आदि' को खोलते हैं — उस अवस्था का घुटनों चलना, और पैरों से चलना-फिरना। रूप गोस्वामी ने इन दोनों का उदाहरण अलग-अलग नहीं दिया। 'अलघु-रचित-रिङ्गम्' यह एक ही पद तन्त्र के ढंग से दोनों को एक साथ दिखा देता है।
tantra is a term of the ritual and grammatical schools: one act performed once but counting for several purposes at the same time — like one lamp lit that serves everyone in the room. Here it means Rūpa's single phrase illustrates crawling and walking together, without being read twice as two separate statements.

Why say 'not a little'? Because it implies a contrast. In the earlier stage of childhood there was crawling too, but only a little. Saying 'no small amount' here marks the middle stage off from the first.
'थोड़ा नहीं' कहने से एक बात और निकलती है। थोड़ा-सा घुटनों चलना पहले भी होता है — यही यहाँ समझाया जा रहा है। छपे हुए पाठ में यह वाक्य सहज नहीं जुड़ता, इसलिए उसे जैसा है वैसा ही रखा गया है।
The printed words prathama-kaumārās te 'pi do not construe smoothly with the singular passive bodhyate. Viśvanātha's parallel sentence at this same place reads prathama-kaumārānte 'pi, 'even at the end of the first childhood', which construes without strain; the two are decoded here as they each stand.

Second duty: walking. Here the sense flips in size — he manages only a little of it, and that little is done on his feet. Note that Jīva does not tell us how the compound is re-split to yield 'even a little'; he simply states the second sense, which the one phrase carries alongside the first.

tanayam anubhavantī — पुत्र का अनुभव करती हुई; sā — वह; sudhābdhau — सुधा के समुद्र में; vijahre — विहार करती रही; iti vā pāṭhaḥ — अथवा ऐसा पाठ है।
Jīva records a second reading of the last line: 'experiencing her son, she sported in an ocean of nectar.' Two things change. Seeing becomes experiencing, and sinking becomes playing about — she is in the ocean and moves in it. He sets the reading down with 'or else' and leaves it standing; he does not choose between them, and neither should we.

Then the ears: the holes are in newly pierced ears. He glosses the ear phrase without taking up the verse's udañcat, so his paraphrase says the holes are there, not that they are opening out.

विश्वनाथ श्लोक के तीनों शब्द बदलकर सरल पद रख देते हैं। 'अलघु' की जगह 'अनल्प', 'रचित' की जगह 'विरचित', 'रिङ्ग' की जगह 'रिङ्गण'। अर्थ यह हुआ कि बालक खूब घुटनों चलता है।

anena — by this word; prathama-kaumārānte 'pi — even at the end of the first childhood; svalpaṁ riṅgaṇam — a little crawling; bodhyate — is to be understood
anena — इस शब्द-चयन से; prathama-kaumārānte 'pi — प्रथम कौमार के अन्त में भी; svalpaṁ riṅgaṇam — थोड़ा-सा रेंगना; bodhyate — समझा जाता है।
The word 'not a little' carries an implication backwards. Even at the tail end of the first stage of childhood there was some crawling — only a little of it. That is why this stage has to be marked as the abundant kind.
'थोड़ा नहीं' कहने से यह भी समझ में आता है। थोड़ा-सा घुटनों चलना प्रथम कौमार के अन्त में भी हो जाता है। 'अपि' से यही सूचित होता है कि वह केवल मध्यम अवस्था की बात नहीं।

Same treatment for 'clothed in the directions'. As in the earlier verse, it means partly uncovered, and uncovered only at times. With that the comment on the verse closes.
'दिग्-दुकूलम्' को पहले की तरह ही लेना चाहिए। इससे दो बातें जाननी हैं — थोड़ी-सी नग्नता, और कभी-कभी की नग्नता। 'च' दोनों को साथ रखता है।
