The unit's lead-in is "atha madhyamam—", "now the middle one": the child's kaumāra is being taken stage by stage, and this verse gives the marks of the middle stretch.

ā-nagnatā — the word ā-nagnatā; īṣan-nagnatā — means being a little unclothed
"Ā-nagnatā" does not mean stark naked. The ā- means "a little". He is only partly uncovered.

Someone could ask: once the ears are pierced the holes never go away, so why list them under the middle stage in particular? Jīva answers that this is when they become clearly visible. That is why Rūpa mentions them here.

"Riṅgaṇādya" is a bahuvrīhi: the thing whose first item is crawling. So the word covers a whole run of behaviour. It starts at crawling and ends when he is toddling about on his feet.

Jīva says only "not properly covered"; Viśvanātha specifies madhya-deśa, the middle of the body. The two readings are left standing side by side.
