atra vyāghra-nakhaṁ kaṇṭhe rakṣā-tilaka-maṅgalam |
atrahere, in vatsala-bhakti-rasa — this is the list that belongs to this rasa locative fixing the scope; the item being defined, maṇḍanam, arrives only at the end of L2यहाँ — अर्थात् इस प्रसंग में; जिस वस्तु का लक्षण किया जा रहा है वह 'मण्डन' शब्द अगली पंक्ति के अन्त में ही आता है
vyāghra-nakhama tiger's claw, worn as a charmबाघ का नख
kaṇṭhehung at the throat locative of place, telling you where the claw sitsगले में — नख कहाँ रहता है, यह बताया
rakṣā-tilaka-maṅgalamthe protective tilaka mark that keeps him safe maṅgala here is not a separate item but says what the mark does — it wards off harmरक्षा के लिए लगाया जानेवाला तिलक, जो अनिष्ट को हटाता है — 'मंगल' कोई अलग वस्तु नहीं, तिलक का यही काम है
atra — here, in vatsala-rasa; kaṇṭhe — at the throat; vyāghra-nakham — a tiger's claw; rakṣā-tilaka-maṅgalam — the protective, harm-warding tilaka mark
Rūpa Gosvāmī now lists the child's ornaments. A tiger's claw tied at his throat. The tilaka mark put on him to keep him safe. These are the things a mother puts on a small boy, half decoration and half protection.
This line and the next define maṇḍana, 'adornment', one of the uddīpanas — the things that kindle vatsala-bhakti-rasa. It follows the same lakṣaṇa-then-udāharaṇa pattern as ceṣṭita in 3.4.21-22.

paṭṭa-ḍorī kaṭau haste sūtram ity ādi maṇḍanam ||
paṭṭa-ḍorīa silk cord ḍorī is the everyday vernacular word for a cord or string, not a Sanskrit technical termरेशम की डोरी — 'डोरी' बोलचाल की भाषा का शब्द है, कोई शास्त्रीय पारिभाषिक शब्द नहीं
kaṭautied round his waist locative; goes with paṭṭa-ḍorīकमर में — यह 'पट्ट-डोरी' के साथ जुड़ता है

ity ādiand everything else of that kind — the list is open, not closedइत्यादि — और भी ऐसी वस्तुएँ
maṇḍanamall this is what is called maṇḍana, 'adornment' the word being defined; the whole of L1-L2 is its contentयही मण्डन है — जिसका लक्षण किया जा रहा था वह शब्द यही है, और ऊपर की दोनों पंक्तियाँ इसी की सामग्री हैं
kaṭau — at the waist; paṭṭa-ḍorī — a silk cord; haste — on the hand; sūtram — a thread; ity ādi — and so on; maṇḍanam — is maṇḍana, adornment
A silk cord round his waist. A thread on his wrist. And whatever else of the sort. All of this together is what he calls maṇḍana, the child's adornment. The ity ādi matters: he is not fixing a list of four items, he is pointing at a whole class of things.

tarakṣu-nakha-maṇḍalaṁ nava-tamāla-patra-dyutiṁ
tarakṣu-nakha-maṇḍalamwearing a ring of tarakṣu claws accusative describing the child; picks up vyāghra-nakham of L1 — both Jīva and Viśvanātha will say the word here has to mean a tigerजिसके गले में तरक्षु के नखों का घेरा है, उस बालक को — यह पहली पंक्ति के 'व्याघ्र-नख' को ही उठाता है; जीव तथा विश्वनाथ दोनों कहेंगे कि यहाँ इस शब्द का अर्थ बाघ ही लेना होगा
nava-tamāla-patra-dyutimwhose glow is that of a fresh tamāla leaf — that is, deep dark bahuvrīhi, 'he whose sheen is…'; this is the first of the verse's two uses of tamāla-patra, and here it means the actual leafनये तमाल-पत्र जैसी जिसकी कान्ति है, उसको — इस श्लोक में 'तमाल-पत्र' दो बार आया है; यहाँ पहली बार, और यहाँ वह सचमुच का पत्ता ही है
tarakṣu-nakha-maṇḍalam — wearing a circlet of tarakṣu claws; nava-tamāla-patra-dyutim — with the glow of a fresh tamāla leaf
Now the example verse. The boy wears a ring of claws at his throat, and his body glows dark like a new tamāla leaf. Keep an ear on tamāla-patra here — the word comes back in the next line meaning something quite different, and that is the point the commentators stop to fix.
An udāharaṇa of maṇḍana, the child's adornment, the uddīpana defined in the two lines just above; the lead-in is 'yathā—'.

śiśuṁ rucira-rocanā-kṛta-tamāla-patra-śriyam |
śiśumthe little boy — everything in the verse is describing him accusative; the object of vīkṣya in L6, held back until nowउस बालक को — यह छठी पंक्ति के 'वीक्ष्य' का कर्म है, जिसे कवि ने अब तक रोक रखा था
rucira-rocanā-kṛta-tamāla-patra-śriyambearing the beauty of a tamāla-leaf shape drawn on him in bright rocanā bahuvrīhi; the second tamāla-patra of the verse — not the tree's leaf but a leaf-shaped mark, as Jīva and Viśvanātha both sayचमकीली रोचना से बनाये गये तमाल-पत्र की शोभा जिस पर है, उसको — यह श्लोक का दूसरा 'तमाल-पत्र' है; जीव तथा विश्वनाथ दोनों कहते हैं कि यह वृक्ष का पत्ता नहीं, पत्ते के आकार का चिह्न है
śiśum — the child; rucira-rocanā-kṛta-tamāla-patra-śriyam — beautiful with a tamāla-leaf figure drawn in bright rocanā
The child carries a leaf-shaped design painted on him in bright yellow rocanā. So tamāla-patra has now been used twice in two lines: first the dark leaf his body resembles, then a leaf drawn on his body in yellow. Dark skin, yellow mark — the two uses are opposite in colour, which is exactly why the commentators pin the second one down.
rocanā (gorocanā) is a bright yellow pigment; it is what the mark is drawn with, and its brightness (rucira) is what makes it show against the dark body.

kaṭi-sphurita-paṭṭa-sūtra-srajamwith a string of silk cord flashing at his waist bahuvrīhi; this answers paṭṭa-ḍorī kaṭau of L2 — the example is filling in the definition item by itemकमर में जिसके रेशमी डोरी की माला चमक रही है, उसको — यह दूसरी पंक्ति के 'कमर में पट्ट-डोरी' का उत्तर है; उदाहरण लक्षण की एक-एक वस्तु भरता चल रहा है

A thread on his wrist, a silk cord shining at his waist. Notice that the example verse walks straight down the definition's list — claw, mark, waist-cord, hand-thread. The lakṣaṇa named them; the udāharaṇa hangs them on an actual child.

sutamat her own son accusative, in apposition with śiśum of L4; sutam, 'son', is what makes this vatsala and not some other rasaअपने पुत्र को — यह चौथी पंक्ति के 'शिशुम्' का ही समानाधिकरण है; 'पुत्र' कहने से ही यह वात्सल्य है, कोई और रस नहीं
na kiladid not at all, you know kila is a light confiding particle — the poet nudges the listener rather than assertingनहीं ही — 'किल' हलका-सा विश्वास में लेनेवाला शब्द है; कवि जोर देकर कहता नहीं, सुननेवाले को धीरे से जताता है

vrajeśa-gṛhiṇī — the wife of Vraja's king; sutam — her son; vīkṣya — looking at him; na kila tṛptim yayau — did not, you know, come to satisfaction
The queen of Vraja looks at her son and never gets her fill of him. The whole verse is one sentence, and the one who feels it comes last. Four lines of ornaments, and then the point: she cannot stop looking. That is what an uddīpana does — the claws and the cord and the yellow mark are not decoration in the poem, they are what kindles the mother's love.

Jīva takes up the word tarakṣu. Strictly it is a different beast, a hyena. But it is close enough to a tiger that the poet can use the word for a tiger, and that is how you must read it here. Why does he bother? Because the definition line said vyāghra-nakham, a tiger's claw. The example has to supply the same item, so the word has to land on tiger.

dvitīyam tamāla-patram — the second tamāla-patra; tilakam — is the tilaka mark
One word, used twice, meaning two different things. Jīva simply numbers them: the second tamāla-patra is the tilaka. So the first is the dark leaf whose glow the boy's body has, and the second is a leaf-shape drawn on him in yellow. Read carelessly and you would think the poet repeated himself; read this way and the second one turns out to be the rakṣā-tilaka the definition promised.

Viśvanātha says the same thing as Jīva, word for word: tarakṣu is close enough to a tiger that the word here means tiger. Worth saying aloud in class that the sentence is identical — the two ācāryas are not arguing here, this reading is simply settled.

Viśvanātha does two jobs here. First he takes the long compound apart with the yatra… taṁ formula, so you see it is a bahuvrīhi describing the boy: the tamāla-leaf drawn in bright gorocanā is the tilaka, and its beauty is on him. Second he tells you what a pratisara actually is — the thing ordinary people call a pauhuṁcī, a band worn on the wrist. That is the everyday object behind the verse's word, and it matches the haste sūtram of the definition line.
