L1definition
asmin muhuḥ pada-kṣepa-kṣaṇike rudita-smite |
asminwhen he is at this stage — the same first kaumāra just described locative with no noun of its own; it carries over kaumāre prathame sati from 3.4.19, where this run of uddīpana verses beganइस (अवस्था) में — यह सप्तमी अकेली खड़ी है, इसके साथ अपना कोई संज्ञा-पद नहीं; ३.४.
muhuḥagain and again, never once indeclinable; it sits inside the compound that follows, so the repetition attaches to the kickingबार-बार — यह अव्यय आगे के समास के भीतर बैठा है, इसलिए बार-बार होना पाँव की उछाल के साथ जुड़ता है
pada-kṣepa-kṣaṇikelasting only as long as the flinging out of a foot — that is, gone in an instant kṣaṇike is neuter dual, so it describes rudita-smite; the first members muhuḥ pada-kṣepa are bound into it, tying the kicking of the feet to the crying and the smiling rather than listing it on its ownजो बार-बार पाँव पटकने के कारण क्षण भर ही ठहरते हैं — 'क्षणिके' नपुंसक द्विवचन है, अतः यह 'रुदित-स्मिते' का विशेषण है, और पाँव की उछाल अलग से गिनाई नहीं जाती, रोने-मुसकाने के साथ ही बँध जाती है
rudita-smitehis crying and his smiling — two of the things that kindle the mood dvandva in the neuter dual; along with ceṣṭitam in L2 these are the items being listed as uddīpanasरोना और मुसकाना — नपुंसक द्विवचन का द्वन्द्व; अगली पंक्ति की 'चेष्टितम्' के साथ ये ही उद्दीपन के रूप में गिनाए जा रहे हैं
asmin — at this [first kaumāra]; muhuḥ pada-kṣepa-kṣaṇike — momentary, lasting no longer than the repeated flinging out of a foot; rudita-smite — the crying and the smiling
Still at that first stage of childhood. The baby cries and then smiles, and neither lasts — each one is over in the time it takes him to kick a foot out. His feet are going the whole while. These are what kindle the parental mood.
The verse has no locative noun of its own: asmin picks up kaumāre prathame sati from 3.4.19, so the list here belongs to the first of the three kaumāra stages. The middle stage does not begin until 3.4.25, kaumāre sati madhyame.

svāṅguṣṭha-pānam uttāna-śayanādyaṁ ca ceṣṭitam ||
sva-aṅguṣṭha-pānamsucking on his own big toe aṅguṣṭha is either thumb or big toe; the illustration in L3 puts the toe of his foot in his mouth, so the toe is meant hereअपने अंगूठे को चूसना — 'अंगुष्ठ' हाथ का अंगूठा भी हो सकता है और पाँव का भी; आगे के उदाहरण में पाँव का अंगूठा मुँह में जाता है, इसलिए यहाँ पाँव का अंगूठा ही समझना
uttāna-śayana-ādyamlying flat on his back, and everything else of that kind -ādya leaves the list open: these are samples, not a closed setचित लेटना आदि — '-आद्य' से सूची खुली रह जाती है; ये नमूने भर हैं, गिनी-चुनी पूरी सूची नहीं
caandऔर
ceṣṭitamhis doings — what the baby simply does with himself neuter nominative, the head noun that uttāna-śayana-ādyam describesचेष्टा, यानी बालक की अपनी क्रिया — नपुंसक प्रथमा; यही मुख्य पद है, जिसका वर्णन 'उत्तान-शयनाद्यम्' करता है
sva-aṅguṣṭha-pānam — sucking his own big toe; ca — and; uttāna-śayana-ādyam ceṣṭitam — his doings, beginning with lying on his back
He sucks his own big toe. He lies flat on his back. And so on with the rest of it. Nothing here is an accomplishment — it is just what a baby does, and that is exactly what sets the parental mood alight.

mukha-puṭa-kṛta-pādāmbhoruhāṅguṣṭha-mūrdha-
mukha-puṭa-kṛta-put into the little cup of his mouth puṭa is a fold or hollow; kṛta here is simply 'placed', and the whole thing feeds the long bahuvrīhi that finishes in L4मुख के कोटर में रखा हुआ — 'पुट' का अर्थ है खोखल या कटोरी-सा गड्ढा, और यहाँ 'कृत' का अर्थ केवल 'रखा हुआ' है; यह सारा अंश उस लम्बे बहुव्रीहि में जाता है जो अगली पंक्ति में पूरा होता है
pāda-ambhoruha-aṅguṣṭha-mūrdha-the tip of the big toe of his lotus foot — that is what went in mūrdhan is literally 'head', so 'the very tip'; ambhoruha, 'lotus', is the standard word for these feetचरण-कमल के अंगूठे का सिरा — 'मूर्धन्' का शब्दार्थ 'सिर' है, अतः यहाँ 'ठीक नोक'; और 'अम्भोरुह' अर्थात् कमल इन चरणों के लिए बँधा हुआ शब्द है
pāda-ambhoruha-aṅguṣṭha-mūrdha — the tip of the big toe of his lotus foot; mukha-puṭa-kṛta — placed into the hollow of his mouth
He has got the tip of the big toe of his lotus foot into his mouth. The compound is not finished — it runs straight on into the next line.
An udāharaṇa of the uddīpanas listed in 3.4.21: the baby's own doings — momentary crying and smiling, sucking his big toe, lying flat on his back. The lead-in is simply 'yathā—', 'as for instance'. Lines 3 and 4 are one unbroken bahuvrīhi describing putram.

pracala-caraṇa-yugmaṁ putram uttāna-suptam |
pracala-caraṇa-yugmamwith both legs waving about — the close of the long description bahuvrīhi in the accusative, agreeing with putram: 'him, whose pair of legs is in motion'जिसके दोनों चरण हिलते-डुलते रहते हैं — द्वितीया में बहुव्रीहि, 'पुत्रम्' का विशेषण
putramher son — the one she is watching accusative; the object of īkṣitum, which does not arrive until L6पुत्र को — द्वितीया; यह 'ईक्षितुम्' का कर्म है, पर वह क्रिया छठी पंक्ति में जाकर ही आती है
uttāna-suptamlying flat on his back picks up uttāna-śayana of L2 word for word — the definition and its example are deliberately matchedचित लेटे हुए — यह दूसरी पंक्ति के 'उत्तान-शयन' को ज्यों का त्यों उठा लेता है; लक्षण और उदाहरण जान-बूझकर एक ही शब्द में मिलाए गए हैं
mukha-puṭa-kṛta-pāda-ambhoruha-aṅguṣṭha-mūrdha-pracala-caraṇa-yugmam [L3–L4] — him whose two legs are waving, the tip of the big toe of his lotus foot set in the hollow of his mouth; uttāna-suptam — lying on his back; putram — her son
Both legs are going. He is flat on his back, toe in mouth, kicking. That whole long compound is one word for the child, and the word it finally lands on is putram — her son.

evaṁ-bhūtaṁ sutam īkṣituṁ tilam api viratā nāsīt ||
evaṁ-bhūtamher son being like that — Viśvanātha folds the whole long description into two words accusative; it stands in for the entire bahuvrīhi of L3–L4 plus virudantam and smera-vaktram of L5ऐसे, इस प्रकार के (पुत्र को) — द्वितीया; तीसरी-चौथी पंक्ति का सारा बहुव्रीहि और पाँचवीं का 'विरुदन्तम्' तथा 'स्मेर-वक्त्रम्' — सब इसी एक पद में समेट लिए गए हैं
sutamher son a plainer word supplied for the verse's putramपुत्र को — श्लोक के 'पुत्रम्' के बदले यह सीधा-सादा शब्द रख दिया गया
īkṣitumfrom looking at [him] he moves the infinitive up next to its object, which the verse had left four lines apartदेखने को — टीकाकार इस तुमुन्नन्त को उठाकर उसके कर्म के पास ले आते हैं, जिसे श्लोक ने चार पंक्ति दूर छोड़ रखा था
tilam apieven for a sesame-seed's worth of timeतिल भर भी
viratā na āsītshe never once left off kept exactly as the verse has it — Viśvanātha sees nothing here needing to be unpackedविरत नहीं हुई — श्लोक का शब्द ज्यों का त्यों रख दिया गया; विश्वनाथ को यहाँ कुछ खोलने योग्य नहीं दीखता
evaṁ-bhūtam sutam — her son, in the state just described; īkṣitum — from looking at; tilam api — even for a sesame-seed's worth; viratā na āsīt — she did not leave off
Viśvanātha does one thing only: he puts the sentence back into prose order. The great compound and the two moments of crying and smiling all get compressed into evaṁ-bhūtam, 'her son being like that'. He swaps putram for the everyday sutam and sets īkṣitum beside it. He changes nothing in the rest, and he leaves the subject goṣṭha-rājñī to the verse.
