L1definition
kṛṣṇaṁ tasya gurūṁś cātra prāhur ālambanān budhāḥ ||
kṛṣṇaṁKṛṣṇa — he is the first one namedकृष्ण को — द्वितीया, 'कहते हैं' क्रिया का कर्म
tasya gurūnand his elders, the ones who stand as parents over him gurūn is accusative alongside kṛṣṇaṁ, both objects of prāhuḥ; tasya "his" ties them to Kṛṣṇaऔर उनके गुरुजनों को — 'तस्य' अर्थात् कृष्ण के; ये भी कृष्ण के साथ ही द्वितीया में हैं, इसलिए दोनों 'कहते हैं' के कर्म हैं
caand — the two together, not one without the otherऔर — दोनों को एक साथ जोड़ता है
atrahere, that is, in this rasa of parental loveयहाँ, अर्थात् इस वात्सल्य-रस के प्रसंग में
prāhuḥthey call, they declare them to beकहते हैं, ऐसा बताते हैं
ālambanānthe ālambanas — the persons the mood rests onआलम्बन — जिनका अवलम्बन लेकर रस ठहरता है
budhāḥthe wise, those who know rasaबुध, अर्थात् रस के मर्म को जाननेवाले विद्वान् — यही 'कहते हैं' के कर्ता हैं
budhāḥ — the wise; atra — here in this rasa; kṛṣṇaṁ — Kṛṣṇa; tasya gurūn ca — and his elders; ālambanān — as the ālambanas, the persons the mood rests on; prāhuḥ — declare.
budhāḥ — रसज्ञ विद्वान्; atra — इस वात्सल्य-रस में; kṛṣṇaṁ — कृष्ण को; ca — तथा; tasya gurūn — उनके गुरुजनों को; ālambanān — आलम्बन; prāhuḥ — कहते हैं।
Here, in vatsala-bhakti-rasa, the wise name two ālambanas. One is Kṛṣṇa. The other is his elders — those who stand as parents to him. An ālambana is the person the mood leans on; without them there is no mood to feel.
रस के जाननेवाले विद्वान् कहते हैं कि इस रस में आलम्बन दो हैं। एक कृष्ण, और दूसरे कृष्ण के गुरुजन। इन्हीं का सहारा लेकर यह रस खड़ा होता है।
ālambana is the "support" of a rasa, and it always has two sides: the viṣaya, the one the love is aimed at (here Kṛṣṇa), and the āśraya, the one in whom the love lives (here the elders).
आलम्बन रस का आधार है, और उसके सदा दो पक्ष होते हैं — विषय, जिसकी ओर प्रेम बहता है (यहाँ कृष्ण), और आश्रय, जिसमें वह प्रेम बसता है (यहाँ गुरुजन)।

nava-kuvalaya-dāma-śyāmalaṁ komalāṅgaṁ
nava-kuvalaya-dāma-śyāmalaṁdark like a garland of freshly opened blue lotuses accusative, describing putram in L4; the compound is a comparison — the garland is the standard, śyāmala the shared dark colourनये नीलकमलों की माला के समान श्यामल — यह द्वितीया है और आगे 'पुत्रम्' का विशेषण है; उपमा में माला उपमान है और श्यामलता दोनों में समान धर्म
komala-aṅgaṁand soft-limbed, his whole body tenderजिसके अंग कोमल हैं — बहुव्रीहि, वही 'पुत्रम्' का विशेषण
nava-kuvalaya-dāma-śyāmalaṁ — dark like a garland of fresh blue lotuses; komala-aṅgaṁ — soft-limbed.
nava-kuvalaya-dāma-śyāmalaṁ — नये नीलकमलों की माला-सा श्यामल; komala-aṅgaṁ — कोमल अंगोंवाला (पुत्र को)।
The picture starts with his colour. He is dark the way a garland of freshly opened blue lotuses is dark. And his limbs are soft — a small child's body, not a hero's.
उनका रंग श्याम है — मानो नये नीलकमलों की ताज़ी माला हो। और उनके अंग बहुत कोमल हैं।
An udāharaṇa for the first ālambana of L1 — Kṛṣṇa himself, taken as the viṣaya of vatsala-rasa. The lead-in reads tatra kṛṣṇo yathā, "as for Kṛṣṇa, for example."
यह पहले आलम्बन का उदाहरण है — स्वयं कृष्ण, जो वात्सल्य-रस के विषय हैं। इसका उपक्रम है 'तत्र कृष्णो यथा', अर्थात् 'कृष्ण के विषय में, जैसे यह पद'।

vicalad-alaka-bhṛṅga-krānta-netra-ambuja-antamwhose lotus-eye corners are overrun by the bees that are his swaying curls a long accusative describing putram; inside it two metaphors interlock — the curls are the bees, the eyes are the lotuses, so the bees settling on the flower is the hair falling across his eyesजिसके नेत्र-कमलों के कोने हिलती हुई अलकों रूपी भौंरों से ढँके हुए हैं — लम्बा द्वितीयान्त विशेषण, 'पुत्रम्' का; भीतर दो रूपक गुँथे हैं — अलकें भौंरे, नेत्र कमल, इसलिए कमल पर भौंरों का बैठना ही आँखों पर बालों का गिरना है
vicalad-alaka-bhṛṅga-krānta-netra-ambuja-antam — him whose lotus-eye corners are overrun by the bees that are his swaying curls.
vicalad-alaka-bhṛṅga-krānta-netra-ambuja-antam — हिलती अलकों-रूपी भौंरों से आक्रान्त नेत्र-कमलों के कोनोंवाले (पुत्र को)।
Now the face. His curls swing loose as he runs. Call those curls bees; call his eyes lotuses. The bees have landed on the flower — the hair has fallen across the corners of his eyes.
उनकी घुँघराली अलकें हिल-हिलकर आँखों पर गिरती हैं। मानो कमल पर भौंरे आ बैठे हों।

vraja-bhuvi viharantaṁ putram ālokayantī
vraja-bhuvion the ground of Vraja locative of place — the playground is named, and it matters: this is Vraja, not Mathurāव्रज की भूमि में — सप्तमी, खेल का स्थान बताती है; और यह स्थान महत्त्वपूर्ण है, यह व्रज है, मथुरा नहीं
viharantaṁas he plays aboutखेलते हुए, विहार करते हुए — वर्तमान कृदन्त, 'पुत्रम्' का विशेषण
putramher son — this is the word the whole description has been waiting forपुत्र को — ऊपर के सारे विशेषण इसी पर लगते हैं
ālokayantīwhile she is looking at him feminine present participle agreeing with vraja-pati-dayitā in L5 — the looking is going on while what L5 reports happensदेखती हुई — स्त्रीलिंग वर्तमान कृदन्त, आगे 'व्रज-पति-दयिता' के साथ अन्वय; अर्थात् जब वे देख रही थीं, तभी अगली पंक्ति की बात हुई
vraja-bhuvi — on Vraja's ground; viharantaṁ — playing; putram — her son; ālokayantī — as she looks at him.
vraja-bhuvi — व्रज की भूमि में; viharantaṁ — विहार करते हुए; putram — पुत्र को; ālokayantī — देखती हुई (व्रजपति की प्रिया)।
All those descriptions attach to one word: putram, "her son." She is watching him play on the soil of Vraja. The watching is not finished and then something follows — it is going on while the next line happens.
व्रज की भूमि में उनका पुत्र खेल रहा है। माता उसी को टकटकी लगाकर देख रही हैं।

āsītbecame, ended upहो गयीं, हो उठीं
prasnava-utpīḍa-digdhāsmeared with milk gushing out of her on its own digdhā is feminine, agreeing with dayitā; utpīḍa carries the force — the milk is not drawn out, it breaks outस्तन से उमड़ती हुई धारा से लिपी हुई — 'दिग्धा' स्त्रीलिंग है, इसलिए 'दयिता' का ही विशेषण; और 'उत्पीड' में ज़ोर है — दूध निकाला नहीं गया, स्वयं फूट पड़ा
vraja-pati-dayitā — the beloved of Vraja's lord; putram ālokayantī — as she watched her son; prasnava-utpīḍa-digdhā āsīt — became smeared with the gush of her flowing milk.
vraja-pati-dayitā — व्रजपति की प्रिया; prasnava-utpīḍa-digdhā — उमड़े हुए स्तन-दूध से लिपी हुई; āsīt — हो गयीं।
And there is the whole rasa in one image. The wife of Vraja's king simply looks at her boy playing. Her milk breaks out of her by itself and she is left smeared with it. The body answered before she did — that is vātsalya.
यह देखते-देखते व्रजपति की प्रिया के स्तनों से दूध फूट पड़ा। वे उसी दूध से भीग गयीं।

balātand by force, with a pressure she cannot hold back ablative used adverbially — "forcibly"ज़ोर से, वेग के साथ — पञ्चमी यहाँ क्रियाविशेषण की तरह प्रयुक्त है
udghamaḥa breaking forth, a welling upउमड़कर बाहर निकलना, उद्गम
utpīḍaḥ — utpīḍa; svayaṁ balāt udghamaḥ — is a breaking forth by itself, forcibly.
utpīḍaḥ — 'उत्पीड' का अर्थ; svayaṁ — अपने आप; balāt — बलपूर्वक; udghamaḥ — उमड़ पड़ना।
Jīva takes up the hard word, utpīḍa. It means a welling up. Two things are packed into it: it happens on its own, and it happens with force. Nobody milked her; she could not have stopped it.
जीव गोस्वामी 'उत्पीड' शब्द खोलते हैं। इसका अर्थ है — अपने आप, वेग के साथ उमड़ पड़ना।

digdhe lipte"digdha and lipta" — the two words mean the same thing, smeared the dual form is how a lexicon lists a pair of synonyms in one entry'दिग्ध' और 'लिप्त' — ये दोनों एक ही अर्थवाले; द्विवचन का यह रूप कोश में एक ही प्रविष्टि में दो पर्यायों को रखने की रीति है
itiso it standsऐसा — उद्धरण की समाप्ति दिखाता है
saṅkīrṇa-vargaḥin the saṅkīrṇa-varga, the "mixed" section of the dictionaryकोश का 'सङ्कीर्ण-वर्ग' नामक प्रकरण — यही प्रमाण का स्रोत है
digdhe lipte iti — "digdha, lipta"; saṅkīrṇa-vargaḥ — so the saṅkīrṇa-varga section of the lexicon.
digdhe lipte — 'दिग्ध' अर्थात् 'लिप्त'; iti — ऐसा; saṅkīrṇa-vargaḥ — सङ्कीर्ण-वर्ग में कहा गया है।
Then the second word, digdhā. Jīva does not explain it himself — he points at the dictionary. Its mixed-words section lists digdha and lipta together as one meaning: smeared, coated.
कोश के सङ्कीर्ण-वर्ग में 'दिग्ध' और 'लिप्त' एक ही अर्थ में गिने गये हैं।
Why cited: Lexical authority that digdhā in the verse means simply "smeared, coated" — so the line reports her being covered in milk, nothing more figurative.
क्यों उद्धृत: कोश का प्रमाण देकर यह पक्का किया जाता है कि पद्य में 'दिग्धा' का अर्थ केवल 'लिपी हुई, सनी हुई' है — अर्थात् पंक्ति इतना ही कहती है कि वे दूध से भीग गयीं, इससे आगे कोई लाक्षणिक अर्थ नहीं।

śyāmalamhe is darkश्यामल, अर्थात् साँवला
navīna-kuvalaya-dāmavat — like a garland of fresh blue lotuses; śyāmalam — dark.
navīna-kuvalaya-dāmavat — नये नीलकमलों की माला की भाँति; śyāmalam — श्यामल।
Viśvanātha unties the verse's first compound. Read it as a comparison: he is dark, and the standard for that darkness is a garland of fresh blue lotuses. The garland is not something he wears; it is what his colour is being measured against.
विश्वनाथ कहते हैं कि यहाँ अर्थ है — नये नीलकमलों की माला जैसा श्यामल। यह उपमा है, यह नहीं कि वे स्वयं माला हैं।

Viśvanātha does the last line in two steps. First he restates the cause: the gush of milk, meaning milk that ran out on its own and under pressure. Then he swaps one word for an easier one: digdhā just means liptā, smeared.
