He starts at the words 'prokteyam'. The first half says 'following the openly-shown līlā'. That phrase makes us supply its opposite in the second half: there it is the līlā that is not openly shown.
A standard reading move: one half of a verse names a limit explicitly, and the unstated other half is read off from it by contrast.

Why cited: the string of sources is adduced to show the eternal unmanifest līlā is no late invention — Purāṇa, Āgama and śruti already sing of it; the Bhāgavatam verse (10.90.48) is its own closing praise of Kṛṣṇa at play with the calves.

In the manifest līlā the power that runs the pastimes makes his appearings differ from one another — as it does when he marries the sixteen thousand princesses. Each appearing carries its own sense of who he is, and they do not keep track of each other. That is arranged so that the rasa of each pastime stays intact. Without that arrangement, separation could not happen at all. So, where it is missing, the verse says 'never'.
Two things to hold. First, the doctrine: separation is possible only because the līlā-śakti keeps the appearings sealed off from one another; take that away and there is nothing left to be separated from. Second, a textual snag — the printed phrase is prakaṭa-līlāyāṁ tad-abhāvāt, 'because that is absent in the manifest līlā', which turns the argument on its head. The reasoning wants aprakaṭa-līlāyām: it is in the unmanifest līlā that the sealing-off, and so the separation, is absent, and that is why the verse can say 'never'. Read it that way, but do not pretend the page says it.

An objection. Take pūrva-rāga and the other kinds of separation — going a short way off, being out with the cows. Everyone tastes those with pleasure: devotees still practising, perfected devotees, the companions in the līlā, the gopīs, Kṛṣṇa himself. And the reason is plain: in each of those cases both parties are still there — the one who loves and the one who is loved.
ālambana is the 'support' of a rasa — the persons without whom the mood has nothing to stand on. It splits in two: the āśraya, the person in whom the mood lives, and the viṣaya, the person it is directed at. The objection turns on both being on the scene.

duḥsahaḥ evais simply unbearable duḥ-saha, 'hard to bear'; eva grants the point without softening itदुःसह ही है (सहना कठिन; 'ही' बात को बिना नरम किए स्वीकार करता है)
kṛṣṇasya vraja-tyāgātbecause Kṛṣṇa gave up Vraja and left ablative of cause — this is the whole difference from a trip with the cowsक्योंकि कृष्ण ने व्रज का त्याग किया — इसी कारण (गायों के साथ की सैर से यही सारा भेद)
iti ataḥ āha—prokteyam itiso, with this in view, he says 'prokteyam'इसलिए 'प्रोक्तेयम्' यह (श्लोक) कहते हैं
ayaṁ sudūra-pravāsākhyaḥ māthura-virahaḥ tu — but this Mathurā separation, called a very distant journey; kṛṣṇasya vraja-tyāgāt — because Kṛṣṇa left Vraja; duḥsahaḥ eva — is simply unbearable; iti ataḥ āha — so with this in mind he says; prokteyam iti — 'prokteyam'
But this Mathurā separation, the one classed as a journey very far off, is simply unbearable — because Kṛṣṇa left Vraja altogether. That is why he now says 'prokteyam'.
The objection is conceded, not dismissed: yes, this separation really is of another order. The verse is then read as the answer to it.

Here is the first reason. Say that, and you have pinned impermanence on the manifest līlā — the one Śuka, Parāśara and Vyāsa themselves describe, in the Bhāgavata, the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, the Harivaṁśa, the Padma Purāṇa. Then no argument at all is left for the unmanifest līlā, which only later writers describe.
A textual snag worth naming in class. The printed compound is aprakaṭa-līlāyā anityatve yukty-asambhavāt. The argument wants nityatve: once you have made the scripturally described manifest līlā temporary, there is no way left to argue that the unmanifest one — attested only by later authors — is eternal. That is the reductio. Read it that way, but do not pretend the printed page says it.

bahirmukha-mata-praveśāpatteḥ caand because you would then walk straight into the doctrine of those who face away from the Lord āpatti, like prasakti, is the unacceptable result you are landed with; ablative of causeऔर बहिर्मुख मत में प्रवेश की आपत्ति के कारण
prakaṭa-līlāyāḥ anityatve — if the manifest līlā does not last; tulya-yuktyā aprakaṭa-līlāyāḥ api anityatvena — by the same reasoning the unmanifest one not lasting either; līlā-sāmānyasya eva anityatva-prasaktyā — impermanence would stick to līlā as such; bahirmukha-mata-praveśāpatteḥ ca — and you would fall into the view of those turned away from the Lord
And here is the second reason. If the manifest līlā does not last, the same reasoning makes the unmanifest one not last either. Then līlā as such turns out to be temporary. And at that point you have walked into the doctrine of people who face away from the Lord altogether.
bahirmukha is literally 'face turned outward' — the position that the Lord's play is not ultimately real. The step being blocked is this: if līlā in general is a passing episode, Kṛṣṇa's activity is not what he ultimately is, and that is precisely the outsiders' thesis.

In fact it is like this. One and the same set of pastimes — birth and all the rest. Shown to the people of the world out of mercy, they are called manifest. Screened off from those same eyes, they are called unmanifest. In what they themselves are, there is no difference between the two at all.
This is the settled thesis of the whole note: prakaṭa and aprakaṭa name a difference in who is allowed to see, not a difference in the līlā. Nothing starts and nothing stops; a curtain opens and closes.

Why cited: cited to prove the two halves of the thesis at once: the līlā is beginningless in itself, and 'manifesting' it is only an act of showing something already there.

Take the sun. Standing in the circle of the sky, it has a rising, a forenoon, a midday, an afternoon — and these are seen in some regions of the earth and not in others. Map it: the sun is Kṛṣṇa; the regions are the universes; sunrise, noon and afternoon are his birth, his boyhood, his youth. Whether you see one of them depends on where you stand, not on the sun. But the illustration has a limit, and he states it in the same breath: for the sun itself, up there in the sky, sunrise is not a real thing and not a permanent one. It is only how the sun looks from a place on the ground.
A dṛṣṭānta, an analogy, and he marks its breaking-point himself. It carries the relativity — what appears depends on the observer's standpoint. It does not carry the reality: sunrise is a mere appearance, whereas Kṛṣṇa's birth is not, and the next sentence says so.

It works the same way for Kṛṣṇa. Take the universes into account, and his birth is happening always, his infancy always, the killing of Baka and the other demons always, the departure for Mathurā always. So every one of the manifest pastimes never stops.

One more turn of the same illustration. The sun's rising, noon and the rest are tracked region by region, but only as far as a shadow-rod and a water-clock can reach. In the same way Kṛṣṇa's birth and the rest are tracked across the universes, right up to the end of Brahmā's day. And at the great dissolution, when no material universe is left, they go on in universes that yoga-māyā shapes and that are taken for material ones. So even the manifest līlā, the one the world can see, is manifest or unmanifest only relative to time and place. Uddhava's own words throw light on it: 'when the Kṛṣṇa-sun had set…'
Note why that half-line is reached for. Uddhava himself calls Kṛṣṇa a dyumaṇi, a sun — so the sun illustration is not an outside device but scripture's own image, and 'setting' in Uddhava's mouth is already the relative kind of setting the argument needs.

The answer: it is in the Mathurā separation and nowhere else that the laments, the madness and the Song to the Bee come out into the open. Those are mahā-bhāva itself turned into speech, and just for that reason they are joy at its outermost limit.
The Bhramara-gīta is the passage in the Tenth Canto where a gopī addresses a bee rather than Uddhava. It stands here, with vilāpa and unmāda, as what only this separation brings to light — so the reply turns the objection round: manifestness is where the highest thing appears.

That is exactly why even Uddhava, when he saw how high such love stands in the women of Vraja, said with astonishment that they stand above Lakṣmī and all the rest. In the Tenth Canto: 'Ah, might I be one who has the dust of these women's feet.' And: 'This favour, my friend, was not for Śrī, whose love for him never lets up.'
Why cited: the two Uddhava verses are adduced to prove the reply just given — the love that comes out in this separation is higher than what Lakṣmī herself receives, so the manifest līlā, not the unmanifest, is where prema reaches its summit.

hlādinī-saṁvid-vṛtti-viśeṣatvena aprākṛtatvāt — because it is a particular working of the hlādinī and saṁvit powers and so is not material; iyaṁ pīḍā api ānanda-rūpā eva — this pain too is itself made of joy
The answer: this pain is a particular working of the hlādinī and saṁvit powers, so it is not made of matter at all. Pain though it is, it is itself made of joy.
hlādinī is the Lord's power of joy and saṁvit his power of knowing — two functions of his own inner energy. The claim is not that the pain is mild; it is that a state made of those powers cannot be anything but joy, however it feels.

A forward reference out of this book into another by the same author. The commentator stops short deliberately: the full case that the pain of separation is joy belongs to the treatment of madhura-rasa there.

Work it out the same way for those whose mood is dāsya, sakhya or vātsalya: how separation and meeting rank against each other there.
This closing line is what brings the whole discussion home to the present chapter. Everything argued through the lovers' separation is handed over to the friends — sakhya — and to the servants and the elders, to be applied by the reader.
