tathā gopāḥ śeratethe cowherd boys lie in just that state Viśvanātha picks up the verse's tathā first, so the reader knows the sentence is not finishedगोप उस प्रकार पड़े हुए हैं; विश्वनाथ सबसे पहले पद्य का 'तथा' ही उठाते हैं, ताकि पाठक समझ ले कि वाक्य अभी पूरा नहीं हुआ
yathāthat — here is the answer to tathāजिस प्रकार

svasyatheir own supplied by Viśvanātha to fix whose tears these are: the deer's, not the boys'अपने; यह शब्द विश्वनाथ ने स्वयं जोड़ा है ताकि तय हो जाए कि ये आँसू किसके हैं — हरिनों के, बालकों के नहीं

gopāḥ tathā śerate — the cowherd boys lie in such a state; yathā — that; vane go-cāraṇa-samayena snigdhāḥ hariṇāḥ api — even the deer, grown fond of them from the time of grazing the cows in the forest; svasya analpa-locana-jalaiḥ — with their own no-small eye-water; vāraṁ vāram — again and again; tān niścalān — those motionless ones; āplāvya nimajjya — flooding and submerging them; śocanti — grieve
Viśvanātha's job here is to lock the two halves of the verse together: the boys lie in such a way that even the deer weep over them. He fills in three things the verse only implies. First, where the deer's affection came from — from the forest, from all the hours of cow-grazing spent alongside the boys; that is what paricaya means. Second, whose tears these are — svasya, the deer's own. Third, how heavy the weeping is — akharva he reads as analpa, "not a little", and to āplāvya, "flooding", he adds nimajjya, "drowning them under". The deer do not sprinkle the boys with tears; they bury them in tears.
Notice that Viśvanātha does not explain niścalān. He leaves "motionless" standing exactly as the verse gives it, and lets the mourning deer say what it means.
