tvayi prāpte kaṁsa-kṣitipati-vimokṣāya nagarīṁ
tvayi prāpteonce you had gone away and arrived there locative absolute (tvayi prāpte) — it sets the time-clause the whole verse hangs on: everything that follows happened after that departureजब आप वहाँ जा पहुँचे — 'आप' और 'पहुँचना' दोनों सप्तमी में हैं, इसलिए यही वह समय-वाक्य बनता है जिस पर आगे का सारा वर्णन टिका है; जो कुछ कहा जा रहा है, वह सब आपके चले जाने के बाद हुआ
kaṁsa-kṣitipati-vimokṣāyain order to be rid of Kaṁsa, the king of the land dative of purpose. vimokṣa is 'release' — the word can be heard both ways: you released the earth from Kaṁsa, and you released Kaṁsa himselfकंस नामक भूपति से छुटकारे के लिए — 'विमोक्ष' दोनों ओर सुनाई देता है: आपने पृथ्वी को कंस से छुड़ाया, और स्वयं कंस को भी छुड़ा दिया
nagarīṁto the city accusative governed by prāpte — 'having reached the city'; the city is the one Kaṁsa rules, and it is not Vrajaनगरी को — 'पहुँचे' का कर्म; वही नगरी जिस पर कंस का राज्य था, व्रज नहीं
kaṁsa-kṣitipati-vimokṣāya — to be rid of King Kaṁsa; nagarīṁ tvayi prāpte — once you had reached the city
Once you had gone off to the city to be rid of King Kaṁsa.
The lead-in is kṛśatā — 'thinness, wasting away'. So this whole verse is an udāharaṇa of kṛśatā, one of the bodily signs (anubhāva) shown by the cowherd friends in preyo-bhakti-rasa, the rasa of friendship. It is spoken to Kṛṣṇa in the second person by someone who stayed behind in Vraja; the text does not name the speaker, so we leave him unnamed. vimokṣa carries a quiet double edge: 'getting rid of' a tyrant, and 'liberating' him — being killed by Kṛṣṇa is Kaṁsa's release.

gabhīrād ābhīrāvali-tanuṣu khedād anudinam |
gabhīrāddeep, going right down agrees with khedāt; the ablative is postponed to the end of the lineगहरे — यह 'खेद' का ही विशेषण है, पर पंक्ति के अन्त में पड़े हुए पंचमी-रूप से जुड़ता है
ābhīrāvali-tanuṣuin the bodies of the whole crowd of cowherds locative of place. ābhīra 'cowherd' + āvali 'a row, a whole line of them' + tanu 'body' — no one body, all of them at onceगोपों की पूरी पंक्ति के शरीरों में — आभीर अर्थात् गोप, आवलि अर्थात् एक पूरी कतार, तनु अर्थात् देह; किसी एक के शरीर में नहीं, सबके शरीरों में एक साथ
khedādbecause of their grief ablative of cause — this is the reason the wasting happens; take it with gabhīrādखेद के कारण — यही वह हेतु है जिससे यह सूखना होता है; इसे 'गहरे' के साथ मिलाकर पढ़िए
anudinamday after day, and it did not stop adverb: anu-dinam, 'following each day' — the wasting is continuous, not one bad dayदिन-प्रतिदिन — हर दिन के पीछे लगा हुआ; यह दुबलापन एक बुरे दिन की बात नहीं, लगातार चलनेवाली बात है
ābhīrāvali-tanuṣu — in the bodies of the crowd of cowherds; gabhīrāt khedāt — from deep grief; anudinam — day after day
In the bodies of all the cowherds, day after day, out of a grief that goes deep.
Listen to the line: gabhīrād ābhīra — the second word almost repeats the first. Rūpa lets the sound 'deep' spill straight into the word 'cowherd', so the grief and the men who feel it are tied together by ear before the sense arrives.

catūrṇāṁ bhūtānām ajani tanimā dānava-ripo
catūrṇāṁ bhūtānāmof four of the elements genitive with tanimā — 'the thinness belonging to the four'. Metre lengthens the first vowel; the commentators write it caturṇām. Four, not five: the fifth is held back for the next lineचार भूतों का — षष्ठी 'तनिमा' से जुड़ती है, अर्थात् 'चारों का दुबलापन'।
ajanicame to be, was born aorist of √jan — a plain past 'arose'; the one finite verb of this lineउत्पन्न हो गया — 'जन्' धातु का सामान्य भूतकाल; इस पंक्ति की एकमात्र क्रिया यही है
tanimāthinness, a wasting away nominative of taniman, the abstract noun from tanu 'thin' — the subject of ajaniपतलापन, क्षीणता — 'तनु' से बना भाववाचक नाम, और यही 'उत्पन्न हुआ' का कर्ता है
dānava-ripoO enemy of the demons vocative — the address chosen on purpose: the one who destroys demons is the one whose absence is destroying his friendsहे दानवों के शत्रु!
dānava-ripo — O enemy of the demons; catūrṇāṁ bhūtānām — of four of the elements; tanimā — thinness; ajani — came about
O enemy of the demons, four of the elements grew thin in them.
The five gross elements are earth, water, fire, air and ākāśa (space). The verse says four of them shrank — and then tells you which one did not.

samīrasya ghrānādhvani pṛthulatā kevalam abhūt ||
samīrasyaof the wind — the air element, the fifth genitive with pṛthulatā; samīra is the ordinary word for wind or breath, and here it is both at onceवायु का — षष्ठी 'पृथुलता' से जुड़ती है; 'समीर' साधारण भाषा में हवा को भी कहते हैं और साँस को भी, और यहाँ दोनों अर्थ एक साथ चल रहे हैं
ghrānādhvanialong the path of the nose locative: ghrāṇa 'nose' + adhvan 'road'. The nostrils are the road the breath travels — read ghrāṇādhvaniनाक के मार्ग में — घ्राण अर्थात् नासिका, अध्वन् अर्थात् रास्ता; नथुने ही वह रास्ता हैं जिससे साँस आती-जाती है (पाठ 'घ्राणाध्वनि')
pṛthulatāa growing broad, a swelling out nominative, the exact opposite of tanimā in the line before — the two abstract nouns are set against each otherस्थूलता, बढ़ जाना — पिछली पंक्ति के 'तनिमा' का ठीक उलटा; दोनों भाववाचक शब्द आमने-सामने रखे गए हैं
kevalamand only there, nowhere else adverbial 'only' — it fences off this one exception from the four that shrankकेवल, सिर्फ़ — इसी एक अपवाद को उन चारों से अलग घेर देता है जो सिकुड़ गए
abhūtcame about aorist of √bhū, answering ajani in L3हो गई — 'भू' धातु का सामान्य भूतकाल, जो पिछली पंक्ति के 'अजनि' का उत्तर देता है
kevalam — only; samīrasya — of the wind; ghrānādhvani — in the path of the nose; pṛthulatā — a broadening; abhūt — came about
Only the wind grew — and only in the road of the nose. Their bodies shrank; their breathing swelled. That is what long, hot sighs look like when you say it in the language of the five elements.
This is the point of the whole verse, and it is a joke told with a straight face. Four elements waste away in the cowherds' bodies; the fifth, air, is the one thing that increases, and it increases exactly where sighing happens. tanimā in L3 and pṛthulatā here are the two poles the verse swings between.

caturṇām ity ākāśasyāpi tanimā deha-kārśyena vivarāṇāṁ sūkṣmatva-prāpteḥ ||
caturṇām ition the words 'of the four' iti quotes the verse's word and makes it the topic — the standard way of pointing at the phrase about to be explained'चतुर्णाम्' इस पद को लेकर — 'इति' श्लोक के शब्द को उद्धृत करके उसी को विषय बना देता है; जिस पद की व्याख्या करनी है, उसकी ओर उँगली रखने की यही रीति है
ākāśasya apiākāśa, space, is included too api concedes the hard case: earth, water and fire shrinking is easy to picture, but space?
tanimāit too has its thinnessक्षीणता, दुबलापन
deha-kārśyenabecause the body has grown lean instrumental of cause — the leanness of the body is what does thisक्योंकि शरीर स्वयं कृश हो जाता है — तृतीया हेतु बताती है; यह काम शरीर का दुबलापन ही करता है
vivarāṇāṁof the hollows in it genitive with prāpteḥ; vivara = an opening, a cavity — the empty spaces inside the body, which is where its ākāśa isछिद्रों का — षष्ठी 'प्राप्ति' से जुड़ती है; विवर अर्थात् खोखला स्थान, छेद — शरीर के भीतर के खाली स्थान, और वहीं शरीर का आकाश रहता है
sūkṣmatva-prāpteḥsince they come to be narrow ablative of reason — this clause is the proof, not a further descriptionक्योंकि वे सूक्ष्म हो जाते हैं — पंचमी हेतु में है; यह वाक्य आगे का वर्णन नहीं, प्रमाण है
caturṇām iti — as to 'of the four'; deha-kārśyena — because the body is lean; vivarāṇāṁ sūkṣmatva-prāpteḥ — the hollows come to be narrow; therefore ākāśasya api tanimā — space too has its thinness
Why say four? Because ākāśa is counted in. And how can space grow thin? Because the body has wasted, so the hollows inside it narrow. Narrow the openings and you have narrowed that body's share of space.
This block is shared: it stands in the commentaries of both Jīva and Mukunda as one note.

tanimā kṛśatā'thinness' — that is, leanness the second word glosses the first: the verse's poetic tanimā is the plain kṛśatā'तनिमा' अर्थात् कृशता — दूसरा शब्द पहले की व्याख्या है: श्लोक के काव्यमय 'तनिमा' का सीधा अर्थ है 'कृशता'
nāsikā-karṇa-cchidrādīnāṁof the nose-holes, the ear-holes and the rest genitive with prāpteḥ; chidra = a hole, an opening — he names the actual openings instead of speaking of hollows in generalनाक-कान आदि के छिद्रों का — षष्ठी 'प्राप्ति' से जुड़ती है; छिद्र अर्थात् छेद, खुला मार्ग — वे सामान्य रूप से 'खोखले स्थान' न कहकर असली छेदों का नाम ले देते हैं
sūkṣmatva-prāpterbecause they come to be narrow ablative of reason — the ground for what followsक्योंकि वे सूक्ष्म हो जाते हैं — पंचमी हेतु में; आगे जो कहा जाएगा उसका यही आधार है
ākāśasya api kṛśatvaṁthat ākāśa too is lean api again takes the difficult member of the set; kṛśatva keeps the same plain word he used to gloss tanimāआकाश का भी कृश होना — 'अपि' फिर उसी कठिन सदस्य को उठाता है; और 'कृशत्व' में वही सीधा शब्द बना रहता है जिससे उन्होंने 'तनिमा' की व्याख्या की थी
jñeyamis what you are to understand here gerundive — 'it should be known': he is telling the reader how to take the count, not adding a new claimजान लेना चाहिए — विधि-अर्थ वाला कृत्य-रूप; वे पाठक को गिनती समझने की रीति बता रहे हैं, कोई नई बात नहीं जोड़ रहे
pṛthivy-adīnāṁ caturṇām api bhūtānāṁ — of all four elements, earth and the rest; tanimā kṛśatā ajani — thinness, that is leanness, came about; nāsikā-karṇa-cchidrādīnāṁ sūkṣmatva-prāpteḥ — because the nose-holes, ear-holes and so on come to be narrow; ākāśasya api kṛśatvaṁ jñeyam — the leanness of ākāśa too is to be understood
Earth and the rest — all four elements grew thin, and 'thin' here just means lean. As for space: the nostrils, the ear-holes and the other openings narrow, and that is how you should understand space growing lean too.
Viśvanātha does two things at once. He glosses the verse's tanimā with kṛśatā — the very word of the lead-in — so the verse is nailed to the anubhāva it illustrates. And he names the openings, nose and ears, rather than speaking of hollows in general.
