The study is what keeps him away — that absence is the whole reason this verse illustrates ayoga.

The middle Pāṇḍava is Arjuna. He is away at his archery lessons. Even there he is fixed on you.
An udāharaṇa of utkaṇṭhitam under ayoga — the lead-in reads atha ayoge utkaṇṭhitaṁ, yathā, 'now longing (utkaṇṭhita) in non-union (ayoga), as follows.' Viśvanātha names the middle Pāṇḍava as Arjuna.

His voice comes out broken with tears. Through it he makes his request, Kṛṣṇa. What he asks for is an embrace.
The mark of sakhya is in what he asks for. Not a sight of you, not a favour — he asks to be held. And he is a grown warrior asking it while away at his training.

So why not today? The fever of separation is on our friends. You guarded them from the belly-fire, the poison and the flames. Why not from this?
The verse works by holding the same verb across both halves. In L4 you were the avitā; in L6 the question is kathaṁ na avasi. Nothing is being asked for that he has not already done.

Viśvanātha walks through the hard words. phaṇi-hrada is Kāliya's lake. kṣveḍa is poison. dava is the forest fire, and its kavala is a swallowing. avitā abhūḥ means you became their guardian. Then the turn: worse than any of those is the fever of separation, which comes on as an open and terrible attack by force. Why do you not guard them from that one? He ends with the lexicon — dhāṭī is an assault by force, says Kṣīra-svāmī.
The load-bearing move is the word-split. Read as one word, avasitān would make the friends 'finished off'; read as avasi + tān it is a question put to Kṛṣṇa — why do you not guard them? Viśvanātha's na rakṣasi fixes the second reading.
