niṣkramayya kila kāliyoragaṁ
niṣkramayyaafter he had driven him out — made him leave the lake absolutive of the causative niṣ-kram: 'having caused to go out'; the action that precedes the main verbबाहर निकालकर — यह काम मुख्य क्रिया से पहले हो चुका है
kilaas everyone knowsसचमुच, जैसा प्रसिद्ध है
kāliyoragaṁthe snake Kāliya — the one he drove out kāliya-uragam, accusative, object of niṣkramayya; uraga = 'snake'कालीय नामक सर्प को — 'उरग' अर्थात् साँप, यही निकालने का कर्म है
kila — as everyone knows; kāliyoragaṁ — the snake Kāliya; niṣkramayya — after he had driven him out
niṣkramayya — बाहर निकालकर; kila — सचमुच; kāliyoragaṁ — कालीय सर्प को
He drove the snake Kāliya out of the lake. Everyone knows the story.
कालीय नामक सर्प को बाहर निकालकर — ऐसा प्रसिद्ध है।
An udāharaṇa of harṣa, 'joy', a passing mood (sañcāri-bhāva) within preyo-bhakti-rasa, the rasa of friendship — the lead-in reads tatra harṣo yathā, 'there, joy, as in this'.
यह हर्ष का उदाहरण है। हर्ष एक सञ्चारी-भाव है, जो प्रेयो-भक्ति-रस अर्थात् सख्य के रस के भीतर आता-जाता रहता है। इससे पहले की पंक्ति है — 'तत्र हर्षो यथा', अर्थात् 'वहाँ हर्ष इस प्रकार'।

vallaveśvara-sute samīyuṣi |
vallaveśvara-sutewhen the son of the cowherd king locative, first half of a locative absolute with samīyuṣi; vallava-īśvara = Nanda, the chief of the cowherdsजब गोपों के स्वामी नन्द के पुत्र — यह 'जब…' वाले वाक्य का पहला अंग है
samīyuṣihad come back close to them perfect participle of sam-ā-i in the locative; with the previous word it makes the 'when…' clauseपास आ पहुँचे, तब — पिछले पद के साथ मिलकर 'जब वे आ गए' ऐसा अर्थ देता है
vallaveśvara-sute — when the son of the cowherd king; samīyuṣi — had come back close to them
vallaveśvara-sute — गोपाधिपति नन्द के पुत्र के; samīyuṣi — पास आ जाने पर
Then the son of the cowherd king came back near to them.
जब गोपों के स्वामी नन्द के पुत्र पास आ पहुँचे।

sammadena suhṛdaḥ skhalat-padās
sammadenabecause they were flooded with joy instrumental of cause; sammada is joy at full pitch, stronger than plain harṣaक्योंकि उन्हें भारी आनन्द हुआ — 'सम्मद' साधारण हर्ष से बढ़ा हुआ उल्लास है
suhṛdaḥthe friends — they are the ones who nominative plural, subject of dadhuḥ in the next lineसखा लोग — आगे 'दधुः' क्रिया के कर्ता
skhalat-padāḥtheir feet stumbling — and, read of speech, their words breaking off bahuvrīhi describing suhṛdaḥ; pada is both 'foot' and 'word', which is where the double sense entersजिनके पद लड़खड़ा रहे थे ऐसे — 'पद' चरण भी है और शब्द भी, यहीं से दो अर्थ खुलते हैं
suhṛdaḥ — the friends; sammadena — because they were flooded with joy; skhalat-padāḥ — with their feet stumbling
sammadena — अत्यन्त आनन्द के कारण; suhṛdaḥ — सखा लोग; skhalat-padāḥ — लड़खड़ाते पदों वाले
The friends were flooded with joy. Their feet stumbled under them. The word pada means both 'foot' and 'word', and the next line will pick up that second sense.
अत्यन्त आनन्द के कारण सखाओं के पद लड़खड़ाने लगे।
The verse turns on a śleṣa: skhalat-pada = 'feet that stumble' of the friends, and 'words that break off' of their speech. Both readings are meant, and the commentators keep both.
यह श्लोक श्लेष पर टिका है। 'स्खलत्-पद' का एक अर्थ है सखाओं के चरण जो लड़खड़ाते हैं, दूसरा अर्थ है उनकी वाणी के शब्द जो टूट-टूट जाते हैं। दोनों ही अर्थ अभिप्रेत हैं, और टीकाकार दोनों को बनाए रखते हैं।

tad-giraś ca vivaśāṅgatāṁ dadhuḥ ||
tad-giraḥtheir speech, their words nominative plural, a second subject of dadhuḥ alongside suhṛdaḥऔर उनकी वाणियाँ — 'दधुः' का दूसरा कर्ता, सखाओं के साथ-साथ
caand — the words no less than the bodiesऔर
vivaśāṅgatāṁthe state of having their parts out of control — limbs for the friends, syllables for the words vivaśa-aṅga-tā, accusative, object of dadhuḥ; aṅga = 'limb' of a body and 'part' of a word, carrying the śleṣa throughअंगों के विवश हो जाने को — 'अंग' शरीर का अवयव भी है और शब्द का अवयव भी, इसी से श्लेष आगे चलता है
dadhuḥthey took on, they fell into perfect of dhā, plural, governing both suhṛdaḥ and tad-giraḥधारण कर लिया — बहुवचन, सखाओं और उनकी वाणियों दोनों की क्रिया
tad-giraḥ ca — and their words too; vivaśāṅgatāṁ — the state of having their parts out of control; dadhuḥ — they took on
tad-giraḥ — उनकी वाणियाँ; ca — और; vivaśāṅgatāṁ — अंगों की विवशता को; dadhuḥ — धारण कर लिया
Both the friends and their words lost control of their own parts. The bodies could not hold their limbs steady, and the speech could not hold its syllables steady.
और उनकी वाणियों ने भी अंगों की विवशता धारण कर ली।

śrī-jīva : gīrṣu skhalat-padatvaṁ padāvasānasyāśakya-nirṇayatvaṁ, vivaśāṅgatvaṁ akṣarāvasānasyeti
śrī-jīva :Śrī Jīva's note, carried here in the text itselfश्रीजीव गोस्वामी कहते हैं —
gīrṣuin the case of the words locative plural of gir, marking the domain in which the following terms are being re-appliedवाणियों के विषय में — अर्थात् आगे के शब्दों को इसी क्षेत्र में फिर से लगाना है
skhalat-padatvaṁ'having stumbling padas' meansपदों का लड़खड़ाना, यानी —
padāvasānasyāśakya-nirṇayatvaṁthat you cannot make out where one word ends pada-avasānasya aśakya-nirṇaya-tvam: 'the un-settleable-ness of the word's ending', the genitive naming what cannot be determinedशब्द का अन्त कहाँ हुआ, यह निश्चय न कर पाना — षष्ठी बता रही है कि किसका निर्णय नहीं हो पाता
vivaśāṅgatvaṁand 'having parts out of control' meansऔर अंगों का विवश होना, यानी —
akṣarāvasānasyathat you cannot make out where one syllable ends either akṣara-avasānasya, genitive; aśakya-nirṇayatvam is carried over from the clause beforeअक्षर का अन्त कहाँ हुआ, इसका — 'निश्चय न कर पाना' पिछले वाक्य से यहाँ ले आना है
itiso much for thatऐसा (श्रीजीव का कथन समाप्त)
gīrṣu — in the case of the words; skhalat-padatvaṁ — 'having stumbling padas' is; padāvasānasya aśakya-nirṇayatvaṁ — that the end of a word cannot be made out; vivaśāṅgatvaṁ — 'having parts out of control' is; akṣarāvasānasya — that of a syllable; iti — so much for that
śrī-jīva : — श्रीजीव; gīrṣu — वाणियों में; skhalat-padatvaṁ — पदों का लड़खड़ाना; padāvasānasyāśakya-nirṇayatvaṁ — शब्द के अन्त का निश्चय न हो पाना; vivaśāṅgatvaṁ — अंगों का विवश होना; akṣarāvasānasya — अक्षर के अन्त का; iti — ऐसा
Śrī Jīva takes the two phrases in their speech-sense. Stumbling padas means you cannot tell where one word stops. Parts out of control means you cannot even tell where one syllable stops. The speech has gone that far out of their hands.

Viśvanātha reads the first sense straight. Kṛṣṇa drove the snake Kāliya out of the lake and came back to his friends' side. Every one of them, out of joy, lost control of his limbs. He adds two things the verse only implies: that it was out of the lake, and that the son of the cowherd king is Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
श्रीविश्वनाथ कहते हैं — कालीय सर्प को कुण्ड से बाहर निकालकर जब श्रीकृष्ण पास आ गए, अर्थात् निकट पहुँच गए, तब सब सखा आनन्द के कारण अंगों की विवशता धारण कर बैठे।

The same two words are now read of their speech. Their words also stumbled in their padas and lost control of their parts. So dadhuḥ carries two subjects: the friends and their words.
उसी प्रकार उन सखाओं की वाणियाँ भी लड़खड़ाते पदों वाली हो गईं और उन्होंने भी अंगों की विवशता धारण कर ली।

Take stumbling padas, said of speech, to mean this: you cannot tell where one word stops. Viśvanātha spells out only this half here and tells the reader to understand it so.
वाणियों के पक्ष में 'पदों का लड़खड़ाना' यह समझना चाहिए कि शब्द कहाँ समाप्त हुआ, इसका निश्चय ही नहीं हो पाता।
