svara-bhedādi-catuṣkam iti |
svara-bhedādi-catuṣkam'the set of four beginning with the breaking of the voice' — Jīva picks up Rūpa's own lead-in words as his heading. catuṣka = a group of four.'स्वर-भेदादि-चतुष्कम्' — जीव गोस्वामी रूप गोस्वामी की उत्थानिका के शब्द ही अपना शीर्षक बना लेते हैं। 'चतुष्क' अर्थात् चार का समूह।
itiso run the words he is about to explain the pratīka marker: it quotes the phrase rather than asserting it.यह प्रतीक-चिह्न है: यह वाक्य को कहता नहीं, उद्धृत करता है।
svara-bhedādi-catuṣkam iti — 'the set of four beginning with change of voice', these words.
svara-bhedādi-catuṣkam iti — 'स्वर-भेदादि-चतुष्कम्' — यह पद लेकर।
Jīva takes up the lead-in phrase as his topic: the set of four signs, starting from the breaking of the voice. Everything he says next is about which four, and in what order.
जीव गोस्वामी मूल की उत्थानिका के शब्द उठाते हैं — 'स्वर-भेदादि-चतुष्कम्'। 'इति' लगाकर वे इसे केवल उद्धरण के रूप में रखते हैं, फिर उसी पर आगे बोलते हैं।

aśru tyaktvā pūrvoddiṣṭa-kramo, na tu śloka-kramaḥ, kṣaṇād iti kṣaṇam atikramya vikāṭety ādi lakṣaṇāḥ, evam evaṁ-bhūtā nipatyeti nipatanād anantaram ity arthaḥ |
aśru tyaktvāleaving out tears gerund of √tyaj. aśru, weeping, is one of the eight sāttvikas and stands in the standard list between vaivarṇya and pralaya — it is the one skipped here, and Jīva says so rather than letting the reader trip on it.अश्रु को छोड़कर — √त्यज् का क्त्वान्त रूप। 'अश्रु' अर्थात् आँसू भी आठ सात्त्विकों में से एक है और प्रसिद्ध गणना में वैवर्ण्य और प्रलय के बीच आता है; यहाँ वही छोड़ा गया है, और जीव यह स्वयं कह देते हैं ताकि पढ़नेवाला अटके नहीं।
pūrvoddiṣṭa-kramaḥthe order is the one already laid down earlier pūrva-uddiṣṭa-krama — 'the sequence pointed out before', i.e. the enumeration order of the sāttvikas as given in the earlier chapter, not something new.पहले बताया हुआ क्रम है — अर्थात् पूर्व प्रकरण में जिस क्रम से सात्त्विक गिनाए गए थे, वही; कोई नया क्रम नहीं।
na tu śloka-kramaḥbut not the order in which the verse happens to name them tu marks the contrast. In the verse, trembling comes first and the broken voice third; the lead-in counts them the other way, and Jīva says the lead-in is following the old list.परन्तु श्लोक का क्रम नहीं — 'तु' विरोध दिखाता है। श्लोक में पहले कँपकँपी आती है और स्वर-भेद तीसरे स्थान पर; उत्थानिका दूसरे ढंग से गिनती है, और जीव कहते हैं कि उत्थानिका पुरानी सूची का अनुसरण करती है।
kṣaṇād itias for the word 'kṣaṇāt' —'क्षणात्' — यह पद लेकर, अब इसकी व्याख्या।
kṣaṇam atikramyait means: once a moment had gone past he turns the ablative into a gerund clause, so kṣaṇāt is time elapsed, not cause.एक क्षण बीत जाने पर — वे पञ्चमी को क्त्वान्त वाक्य में बदल देते हैं, जिससे 'क्षणात्' बीता हुआ समय ठहरता है, कारण नहीं।
vikāṭety ādi lakṣaṇāḥand then they bore the marks described from 'vikaṭa…' onward vikāṭā iti ādi-lakṣaṇāḥ; the printed vikāṭa- stands for the verse's vikaṭa-. lakṣaṇāḥ, nominative plural, hangs on the friends: what showed on them after that moment.'विकटा' इत्यादि जिनके लक्षण हैं, वे — छपा हुआ रूप 'विकाट-' है, जो श्लोक के 'विकट-' के स्थान पर है। 'लक्षणाः' प्रथमा बहुवचन, सखाओं का ही विशेषण: उस क्षण के बाद उन पर जो-जो चिह्न प्रकट हुए।
evam evaṁ-bhūtāḥso, being in that condition evam 'in this way' picking up everything just said, evaṁ-bhūtāḥ 'having become such' — the bridge from the state to the action of falling.इस प्रकार, ऐसी दशा को प्राप्त हुए — 'एवम्' अभी कही हुई सारी बात को समेटता है, और 'एवं-भूताः' अर्थात् 'ऐसे हो चुके'; यही दशा से गिरने की क्रिया तक का सेतु है।
nipatyetias for the word 'nipatya' —'निपत्य' — यह पद लेकर।
nipatanād anantaramit means: immediately after the fall ablative with anantaram, 'with nothing in between'. The point of the gerund is sequence with no gap — they hit the ground and the stillness is already there.गिरने के तुरन्त बाद, बीच में कुछ भी नहीं — 'अनन्तरम्' के साथ पञ्चमी। क्त्वा प्रत्यय का तात्पर्य यही निर्बाध क्रम है: वे भूमि पर गिरे और निश्चेष्टता उसी क्षण उपस्थित थी।
ity arthaḥthat is the senseयही अर्थ है — व्याख्या यहाँ पूरी हुई।
aśru tyaktvā — setting tears aside; pūrva-uddiṣṭa-kramaḥ — the sequence is the one stated earlier; na tu śloka-kramaḥ — not the verse's own sequence; kṣaṇād iti — the word kṣaṇāt; kṣaṇam atikramya — means after a moment had passed; vikaṭety-ādi-lakṣaṇāḥ — they showed the marks named from 'vikaṭa' on; evam evaṁ-bhūtāḥ — thus being in that state; nipatyeti — the word nipatya; nipatanād anantaram ity arthaḥ — means right after falling, that is the sense.
Three things settled. First, the count: drop tears from the list, and the four are being named in the order given earlier, not in the order the verse puts them in. Second, kṣaṇāt — a moment goes by, and then the harsh rattling and the rest show up on them. Third, nipatya — the falling comes first and the stillness follows straight after it, with nothing in between.
The eight sāttvika-bhāvas run stambha, sveda, romāñca, svara-bheda, vepathu, vaivarṇya, aśru, pralaya. Read against that list, Rūpa's 'four beginning with svara-bheda' would have to include aśru — so Jīva removes it by hand: the verse shows no weeping, and the four intended are svara-bheda, vepathu, vaivarṇya, pralaya.

suṣuptim iti tām iva niśceṣṭāvasthām ity arthaḥ ||
suṣuptim itias for the word 'suṣupti', deep sleep —'सुषुप्तिम्' — यह पद लेकर, अब इसका अर्थ।
tām ivasomething only like that sleep iva is the whole point: tām refers back to deep sleep, and iva keeps it a comparison. They did not fall asleep.उसके समान — 'इव' ही सारा तात्पर्य है; 'ताम्' गाढ़ी नींद की ओर लौटकर संकेत करता है और 'इव' उसे केवल उपमा बनाए रखता है। वे सो नहीं गए थे।
niśceṣṭāvasthāma state in which there is no movement left niśceṣṭa-avasthā — 'motionless condition', accusative, standing as the real object of ārebhire in place of suṣuptim.चेष्टा-रहित अवस्था को — 'निश्चेष्ट-अवस्था', द्वितीया; 'सुषुप्तिम्' के स्थान पर यही 'आरेभिरे' का वास्तविक कर्म बनती है।
ity arthaḥthat is the senseयही अर्थ है।
suṣuptim iti — the word suṣupti; tām iva niśceṣṭa-avasthām — a motionless state resembling deep sleep; ity arthaḥ — that is what is meant.
suṣuptim iti — 'सुषुप्तिम्' इसका अर्थ; tām iva niśceṣṭāvasthām — उसके समान चेष्टा-रहित अवस्था को; ity arthaḥ — यही तात्पर्य है।
'Deep sleep' is not literal here. Jīva reads it as a state like deep sleep — the body lying there with no movement in it at all.
'सुषुप्तिम्' का अर्थ है — गाढ़ी नींद जैसी, चेष्टा से रहित अवस्था। 'इव' रखकर जीव गोस्वामी इसे उपमा ही रहने देते हैं। वास्तव में सखा सोए नहीं थे।
This is what keeps the verse a case of pralaya rather than of sleep. pralaya is the sāttvika collapse in which the body stops responding; sleep is an ordinary condition and would carry no rasa.
इसी से श्लोक प्रलय का उदाहरण बना रहता है, नींद का नहीं। प्रलय वह सात्त्विक निश्चेष्टता है जिसमें शरीर उत्तर देना बन्द कर देता है; नींद तो साधारण दशा है और उसमें कोई रस नहीं होता।
