api guru-puras tvām utsaṅge nidhāya visaṅkaṭe
apieven — even in the one place where he might have been expected to hold back api sits first and colours the whole clause; the concession is the point, not an ornamentयहाँ तक कि — यह 'अपि' पूरे वाक्य पर छाया रहता है; बात ही यह है कि गुरुजनों के सामने भी
guru-puraḥright in front of the elders puras, 'before, in the presence of'; the phrase works as an adverb on the placing and the embrace that followsगुरुजनों के आगे, उनके सामने ही — 'पुरः' का अर्थ है 'सामने'; यह बैठाने और आगे आने वाले आलिंगन दोनों पर लगता है
tvāmyou — you are the one he takes hold ofतुझे (हे सुबल!)
utsaṅgeonto his lap locative of the place you are set down inअपनी गोद में — जहाँ बैठाया जाता है, वह स्थान
nidhāyahaving first set you there gerund: the seating comes first, then the embrace of the next lineबैठाकर — पहले बैठाना होता है, फिर अगली पंक्ति का आलिंगन
visaṅkaṭeand that lap is a broad one agrees with utsaṅge; Viśvanātha's quotation from the Dāna-keli-ṭīkā fixes the word as pṛthu, 'broad'चौड़ी — यह 'उत्सङ्गे' का विशेषण है; विश्वनाथ दान-केलि-टीका का वचन उद्धृत करके इसका अर्थ 'पृथु' अर्थात् 'चौड़ा' निश्चित करते हैं
api guru-puraḥ — even before the elders; tvām visaṅkaṭe utsaṅge nidhāya — having set you on his broad lap
api — यहाँ तक कि; guru-puraḥ — गुरुजनों के सामने ही; tvām — तुझे; visaṅkaṭe utsaṅge — अपनी चौड़ी गोद में; nidhāya — बैठाकर
Even in front of the elders. That is where the api bites — not in a corner, not when no one is looking. He sets you on his lap first, and the lap is a wide one.
गुरुजनों के सामने ही, तुझे अपनी चौड़ी गोद में बैठाकर — और फिर (अगली पंक्ति में) आलिंगन। 'अपि' यही जताता है कि जो बड़ों के सामने नहीं होना चाहिए, वही हो रहा है।
The lead-in reads romāñco, yathā dāna-keli-kaumudyām (37) — so this is an udāharaṇa of romāñca, the standing up of the hair, a sāttvika-bhāva of sakhya-rasa listed in this laharī. The verse is quoted from Rūpa Gosvāmī's own Dāna-keli-kaumudī 37; the horripilation itself arrives in line 2.

ullāsambreaking out: so, bursting out thickly in thrilled hair adverbial accusative closing the compound — it says how he embraces, not what he embracesउल्लास के साथ — यह क्रियाविशेषण के रूप में द्वितीया है; बताता है कि वह किस प्रकार आलिंगन करता है, किसका नहीं
svarāfreely, with nothing checking him the adverbial slot before the verb; Viśvanātha reads the embrace here as nirargalam, 'unbarred' — see the noteक्रिया से पहले का क्रियाविशेषण-स्थान; छपा हुआ रूप 'स्वरा' है — विश्वनाथ इस आलिंगन को 'निरर्गलम्' अर्थात् 'बिना रोक-टोक' बताते हैं; देखें टिप्पणी
pariṣvajatehe embraces you present tense — it is happening in front of the speaker as she says thisआलिंगन करता है — वर्तमान काल; यह कहते समय बोलने वाली के सामने ही हो रहा है
hariḥHari is the one doing itहरि (श्रीकृष्ण)
hariḥ — Hari; vipula-pulaka-ullāsam svarā — bursting out thickly in thrilled hair, unchecked; pariṣvajate — embraces you
hariḥ — हरि; svarā — (उस रीति से) ; vipula-pulaka-ullāsam — बहुत अधिक पुलक के उल्लास के साथ; pariṣvajate — तुझे आलिंगन करता है
Then the embrace. And with it the hair on his body stands up — vipula, a great deal of it, ullāsa, breaking out all over. That is the romāñca this verse was brought in to show. Note the tense: pariṣvajate, present. She is watching it happen.
और हरि तुझे आलिंगन करता है — ऐसे कि रोंगटे खूब खड़े हो जाते हैं, उसी उल्लास के साथ। क्रिया वर्तमान में है : यह अभी, आँखों के सामने घट रहा है।
The word printed in the adverbial slot is svarā, and it is hard. Viśvanātha does not repeat it; he reads the embrace as nirargalam pratibandhaka-rahitam, 'unbarred, with nothing standing in the way', which is the work an adverb in this position would be doing.
क्रियाविशेषण के स्थान पर छपा हुआ शब्द 'स्वरा' है, और वह कठिन है। विश्वनाथ उसे दोहराते नहीं; वे आलिंगन को 'निरर्गलम् प्रतिबन्धक-रहितम्' अर्थात् 'बिना अर्गल के, जिसमें कोई रुकावट न हो' — कहकर समझाते हैं, और इसी स्थान का क्रियाविशेषण यही काम करता।

And he drapes his arm across your shoulder. The sound does half the work: bhujaṁ bhujagopamam — the arm, and the arm's likeness, a snake. Heavy, long, settled where it fell. Two favours now: the lap and the embrace, then the arm.

Then the question the whole verse was built for. Where, Subala? In what holy field, in what earlier time, and how much tapas did it take to buy this? Two interrogatives together — kva, which place, and kiyat, what amount. The speaker — Jīva and Viśvanātha both name her as Śrī Rādhā — is not asking to be told. She is measuring her own fortune against his.

Jīva settles two things. Who speaks: Śrī Rādhā — and mānasam eva, only inside her own mind. Not one syllable is out loud. What kind of speech it is: anutāpa, regret that burns after the seeing. Then the word that could mislead. Guru here is not teachers or the seniors of the village at large. Jīva says: Śrī Balarāma and those like him.
'अपि गुरु-पुरः' — यह श्लोक श्रीराधा का वचन है, और वह भी केवल मन के भीतर का; बोला हुआ नहीं। यह अनुताप की बात है। और यहाँ 'गुरु' से श्रीबलराम आदि ही लिए गए हैं।
anutāpa is literally the heat that comes after — the burning that follows on watching someone else receive what one wants. It is not remorse for a fault.
'अनुताप' का सीधा अर्थ है — पीछे आने वाली जलन; जो चाहिए वह किसी और को मिलते देखकर भीतर जो ताप उठता है, वही। यह अपने किसी अपराध का पछतावा नहीं है।

Viśvanātha starts where Jīva starts: Śrī Rādhā, speaking only in her mind, in regret. Then he names the elders — Śrī Nanda, Śrī Balarāma, and others of that rank. And he adds a word about the embrace itself: nirargala, unbarred. He unpacks it at once — pratibandhaka-rahita, with nothing in the way. The yathā syāt tathā formula makes it describe the embracing: he embraced in a manner that nothing could check.
यह श्रीराधा का मन ही मन का अनुताप-वचन है। यहाँ 'गुरु' से श्रीनन्द, श्रीबलराम आदि लिए गए हैं। और आलिंगन ऐसा हुआ कि बीच में कोई अर्गल न थी, कोई रुकावट न थी।
Jīva and Viśvanātha do not name the same elders. Jīva writes śrī-rāmādaya eva, with eva restricting the list to Śrī Balarāma and his sort; Viśvanātha writes śrī-nanda-śrī-rāmādayaḥ, putting Śrī Nanda at the head. Both readings stand as they are.
जीव और विश्वनाथ एक ही गुरुजनों के नाम नहीं देते। जीव लिखते हैं 'श्री-रामादय एव', और 'एव' गिनती को श्रीबलराम आदि तक ही सीमित कर देता है; विश्वनाथ लिखते हैं 'श्री-नन्द-श्री-रामादयः', और सबसे आगे श्रीनन्द को रखते हैं। दोनों पाठ जैसे हैं वैसे ही रहते हैं।

He names the asau: Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He flattens praṇayati to karoti — he simply puts his arm there. Then one word of his own does real work: tasmāt, 'therefore'. The verse just sets the question next to the favours; Viśvanātha makes it follow from them. Because of all that, Subala — where, and how much?

dāna-keli-ṭīkā — the Dāna-keli commentary: visaṅkaṭe pṛthuni — visaṅkaṭa means broad; kva kiyat tapaḥ iti — 'where, how much austerity'
dāna-keli-ṭīkā — दान-केलि-टीका में; visaṅkaṭe — 'विसङ्कट' का अर्थ; pṛthuni — 'चौड़ा'; kva kiyat tapaḥ — 'कहाँ, कितना तप'; iti — इस प्रकार
Viśvanātha reaches for the commentary on the Dāna-keli itself. Two things come from it. First, visaṅkaṭa is pṛthu — broad; the lap is wide. Second, it keeps kva and kiyat tapaḥ together as one question, which is what he builds on next.
दान-केलि-टीका में कहा है : 'विसङ्कट' अर्थात् चौड़ा; और 'कहाँ, कितना तप' — इस प्रकार।
Why cited: Brought in from the source work's own commentary to settle visaṅkaṭa as 'broad', and to show that kva and kiyat tapaḥ are read there as a single question — the reading Viśvanātha then draws his conclusion from.
क्यों उद्धृत: मूल ग्रन्थ की अपनी टीका से यह इसलिए लाया गया है कि 'विसङ्कट' का अर्थ 'चौड़ा' पक्का हो जाए, और यह भी दिखे कि वहाँ 'क्व' और 'कियत् तपः' को एक ही प्रश्न मानकर पढ़ा गया है — इसी पाठ पर विश्वनाथ आगे अपना निष्कर्ष खड़ा करते हैं।

Why ask where and how much, if no answer is coming? Because that is the point. The place cannot be located, the amount cannot be counted — durjñeya, and eva makes it absolute, by anyone at all. And Viśvanātha gives the reason: so that no second man as fortunate as Subala should ever arise. Keep the price secret and no one else can pay it.
