kaiśoraṁ pūrvam evoktaṁ saṅkṣepeṇocyate tataḥ ||
kaiśoramkaiśora, the boy's adolescent age, is the next uddīpana to take up accusative/nominative as the topic word; the lead-in atha kaiśoram announces it as the headingकैशोर अर्थात् किशोर अवस्था — यही यहाँ का प्रस्तुत विषय है
pūrvam evahas already been dealt with earlier in this very book — eva says it was done there in full eva is doing argument work: it is the reason the treatment here can be shortपहले ही — 'ही' यह बताता है कि वह कहना बाकी नहीं रहा
uktamwas stated past passive participle agreeing with kaiśoramकहा जा चुका है (कैशोर के विषय में)
saṅkṣepeṇaso only in brief instrumental of manner — the mode in which it will now be saidसंक्षेप से, थोड़े में ही
ucyateit is being spoken of hereकहा जाता है
tataḥfor that reason ablative used as a connective — 'because of that', pointing back to pūrvam eva uktamइसीलिए, अर्थात् पहले ही कहा जा चुका है इस कारण
kaiśoram — kaiśora; pūrvam eva uktam — has already been stated earlier; tataḥ — therefore; saṅkṣepeṇa — in brief; ucyate — it is spoken of here.
kaiśoram — कैशोर; pūrvam eva — पहले ही; uktam — कहा जा चुका है; tataḥ — इस कारण; saṅkṣepeṇa — संक्षेप से; ucyate — कहा जाता है।
Next in the list of uddīpanas comes kaiśora, Kṛṣṇa's adolescent age. Rūpa has already treated it earlier in the book. So he will not repeat that treatment. Here he only gives it in short — and then goes straight to an example verse.
कैशोर का वर्णन पहले ही किया जा चुका है। इसी कारण यहाँ उसे संक्षेप में ही कहा जाता है।
Viśvanātha supplies the earlier passage below: kaiśora is threefold — first, middle and last (2.1.312). That is what 'already stated earlier' points to.
विश्वनाथ वही पूर्वोक्त वचन नीचे उद्धृत करते हैं — कैशोर तीन प्रकार का है: आद्य, मध्य और शेष (2.1.312)। 'पहले ही कहा जा चुका है' का संकेत उसी वचन की ओर है।

paśyotsikta-valī-trayī-vara-late vāsas taḍin-mañjule
paśyalook at him! imperative — the verse is spoken by one person pointing something out to another; the text itself does not name eitherदेख! — कोई एक व्यक्ति दूसरे को दिखाते हुए कह रहा है; मूल श्लोक में दोनों में से किसी का नाम नहीं है
utsikta-valī-trayī-vara-lateon him in whom the three risen folds of the belly are the finest creeper bahuvrīhi in the locative, agreeing with dāmodarāmbhodhare in the next line. Jīva and Viśvanātha both note that the cloud reading resolves the same compound with 'by which' instead of 'in whom'जिसमें उभरी हुई त्रिवली रूपी श्रेष्ठ लता सुशोभित है — ऐसे उस (दामोदर रूपी मेघ) में; मेघ-पक्ष में यही समास 'जिसके द्वारा' करके खोला जाता है
vāsas taḍin-mañjuleon him who is lovely with a garment that is lightning locative again; taḍit, 'lightning', is the yellow cloth on the Kṛṣṇa reading and the lightning-streak on the cloud readingजिसका वस्त्र बिजली के समान मनोहर है — उसमें; कृष्ण-पक्ष में 'तडित्' पीताम्बर है, मेघ-पक्ष में वही बिजली की रेखा है
paśya — look; utsikta-valī-trayī-vara-late — at him whose finest creeper is the three raised belly-folds; vāsas taḍin-mañjule — who is lovely with a lightning-garment; [dāmodarāmbhodhare — the Dāmodara-raincloud, in line 3].
paśya — देख; utsikta-valī-trayī-vara-late — जिसमें उभरी त्रिवली रूपी श्रेष्ठ लता है, ऐसे; vāsas taḍin-mañjule — जिसका वस्त्र बिजली-सा मनोहर है, ऐसे (दामोदर रूपी मेघ में)।
Someone says: look at him. Then the describing begins, and every word of it is in the locative, waiting for the noun in line three. He has three folds risen on his belly — call them a creeper climbing him. He wears a cloth that flashes like lightning.
देख! उसकी त्रिवली उभरी हुई श्रेष्ठ लता के समान है। और उसका वस्त्र बिजली के समान मनोहर है। मेघ-पक्ष में वही उभरी हुई लता-रेखा और वही चमकती बिजली मेघ की शोभा बन जाती है।
This is the udāharaṇa for kaiśora as an uddīpana of sakhya-rasa, the age just named in verse 78. The whole verse runs on a śleṣa: Kṛṣṇa is described throughout as a rain-cloud (ambhodhara) and Śrīdāmā as a tree (śākhī), so each image has to be heard twice.
यह श्लोक 78 में कहे गए कैशोर का उदाहरण है — सख्य-रस के उद्दीपन रूप में। पूरा श्लोक श्लेष पर चलता है: कृष्ण का वर्णन आद्योपान्त वर्षा-मेघ (अम्भोधर) के रूप में और श्रीदामा का वृक्ष (शाखी) के रूप में हुआ है, इसलिए हर चित्र दो बार सुनना पड़ता है।

pronmīlad-vana-mālikā-parimala-stomeon him from whom rises the whole mass of fragrance of the forest-garland breaking into bloom bahuvrīhi, locative, still qualifying dāmodarāmbhodhare. stoma is 'a heap, the whole quantity' — not a whiff but a load of scentजिसमें खिलती हुई वनमाला की सुगन्ध का पूरा समूह भरा है — ऐसे उस में; 'स्तोम' अर्थात् ढेर, थोड़ी-सी महक नहीं, सुगन्ध का पूरा भार
tamāla-tviṣion him whose gleam is the dark of the tamāla tree the tamāla is proverbially black-barked; the word carries the dark of Kṛṣṇa's body and the dark of a rain-cloud at onceजिसकी कान्ति तमाल के समान श्याम है — उसमें; तमाल की काली छाल के कारण यह शब्द एक साथ कृष्ण के श्याम अंग और वर्षा-मेघ की श्यामता, दोनों को उठा लेता है
ukṣatiwhen he showers locative absolute together with dāmodarāmbhodhare — 'while the cloud is sprinkling'; both commentators gloss ukṣati with siñcatiजब वह सींच रहा है — दोनों टीकाकार 'उक्षति' का अर्थ 'सिञ्चति' करते हैं
ambaka-cātakānthe cātaka birds that are the onlookers' eyes accusative, what gets sprinkled. ambaka = eye; Jīva and Viśvanātha both take it as everyone's eyes, and the cātaka drinks only what falls from a cloudनेत्र रूपी चातकों को — यही सींचे जाते हैं; 'अम्बक' अर्थात् नेत्र, और चातक मेघ से गिरे जल के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं पीता
smita-rasaiḥwith the streaming sweetness of his smiles instrumental of means — the smiles are the rain-water in the imageमुसकान रूपी रसों के द्वारा — इस चित्र में मुसकानें ही वर्षा-जल हैं
dāmodarāmbhodharewhen the raincloud who is Dāmodara does so the head of the locative absolute; Dāmodara and ambhodhara are put in one compound so the man and the cloud cannot be pulled apartदामोदर रूपी मेघ के (सींचते रहने पर) — दामोदर और अम्भोधर एक ही समास में रखे गए हैं, जिससे पुरुष और मेघ अलग न किए जा सकें
pronmīlad-vana-mālikā-parimala-stome tamāla-tviṣi utsikta-valī-trayī-vara-late vāsas taḍin-mañjule dāmodarāmbhodhare — when the Dāmodara-raincloud, whose creeper is the three risen folds, lovely with a lightning-garment, loaded with the scent of the opening forest-garland, dark as the tamāla; smita-rasaiḥ — with the water of his smiles; ambaka-cātakān — the eye-cātakas; ukṣati — showers.
pronmīlad-vana-mālikā-parimala-stome — जिसमें खिलती वनमाला की सुगन्ध का समूह है, ऐसे; tamāla-tviṣi — तमाल-सी श्याम कान्ति वाले; dāmodarāmbhodhare — दामोदर रूपी मेघ के; smita-rasaiḥ — मुसकान रूपी रसों से; ambaka-cātakān — नेत्र रूपी चातकों को; ukṣati — सींचते रहने पर।
The fragrance of his forest-garland comes off him in a whole cloud of scent. His colour is the black of the tamāla. Now the sentence finally names him: the Dāmodara-raincloud. And what does the cloud rain? Smiles. What does it rain on? The watching eyes, which are the cātaka birds waiting open-beaked for exactly this water.
उसमें खिलती हुई वनमाला की सुगन्ध का पूरा ढेर भरा है, और उसकी कान्ति तमाल के समान श्याम है। वह दामोदर रूपी मेघ जब अपनी मुसकान रूपी जल-धाराओं से नेत्र रूपी चातकों को सींच रहा है —
The cātaka is said to drink nothing but rain caught in the air. That is why the eyes are called cātakas: they will take no other satisfaction than the sight of him.
कहा जाता है कि चातक आकाश में ही पकड़े गए वर्षा-जल के सिवा और कुछ नहीं पीता। इसीलिए नेत्रों को चातक कहा गया है: वे उसके दर्शन के अतिरिक्त किसी और तृप्ति को स्वीकार ही नहीं करेंगे।

pronmīlad iti caand likewise the compound beginning pronmīlad- ca ties the two compounds together as one grammatical caseऔर 'प्रोन्मीलत्' इत्यादि पद — 'च' दोनों समासों को एक ही विभक्ति में जोड़ देता है
śrī-dāmodara-pakṣewhen you read the verse of Śrī Dāmodara, the person locative of the side of the pun being taken; pakṣa here = one of the two readings a śleṣa carriesश्रीदामोदर-पक्ष में, अर्थात् श्लेष के जिस पक्ष को लिया जाए उसमें; यहाँ 'पक्ष' का अर्थ श्लेष के दो अर्थों में से एक

utsikta iti pronmīlad iti ca — the words utsikta- and pronmīlad-; śrī-dāmodara-pakṣe — on the Dāmodara reading; saptamy-anya-padārthaḥ — are bahuvrīhis with a locative relative.

Jīva takes two compounds: utsikta-valī-trayī-vara-latā and pronmīlad-vana-mālikā-parimala-stoma. Read them of Kṛṣṇa the person, and each one means 'he in whom'. He in whom the fine creeper is the three risen folds. He in whom the mass of scent of the opening garland is.
'उत्सिक्त…' और 'प्रोन्मीलत्…' — ये दोनों पद श्रीदामोदर-पक्ष में सप्तमी वाले बहुव्रीहि हैं। अर्थात् इनका विग्रह 'यस्मिन्' कहकर करना चाहिए।

ambhodhara-pakṣe — अम्भोधर-पक्ष में; tṛtīyānya-padārthaḥ — तृतीया वाला अन्यपदार्थ (बहुव्रीहि) है।
Now the second layer, and this is the hinge of the verse. Take the very same compounds as describing a cloud, and the relative you supply changes case. Not 'in whom' but 'by which': that by which the swollen lines show, that by which the mass of fragrance is carried. Jīva keeps both readings live — one word, two grammars.
मेघ-पक्ष में वही समास तृतीया वाला बहुव्रीहि हो जाता है। अर्थात् वहाँ 'येन' कहकर विग्रह करना चाहिए।

Or else, says Jīva, read it differently again. The verse is not painting two figures side by side. It is painting one embrace. Śrīdāmā and Dāmodara have gone into each other so completely that they are described together — the way you cannot say where the woods end and the cloud sitting on them begins. Jīva does not choose between this and what he said above; both stand.

tatra tatranow to the one, now to the otherवहाँ-वहाँ, जहाँ-जहाँ वे आए हैं

So do not try to police which image belongs to whom. Creeper, forest-garland, tree — the poet gives them now to one friend, now to the other, as he likes. Jīva says that looseness is not carelessness. It is the very thing that makes the verse taste of rasa, because the two are that mixed up in each other.

ambakānithe word ambaka means'अम्बक' शब्द से जो कहे गए हैं, वे
sarveṣāṁ akṣīṇy evanothing other than the eyes of everyone there eva rules out any other sense of ambaka; sarveṣām keeps it general — Jīva does not name whose eyesसबके नेत्र ही — 'ही' से 'अम्बक' का कोई दूसरा अर्थ नहीं रहने दिया जाता; 'सबके' कहकर जीव किसी का नाम नहीं लेते
cātakāḥand those eyes are the cātaka birds the compound ambaka-cātaka is thus a rūpaka: the eyes ARE the birds, not like themवे ही चातक हैं — इसलिए 'अम्बक-चातक' रूपक है: नेत्र चातकों के समान नहीं, नेत्र ही चातक हैं
tān ukṣati siñcatithem he showers — ukṣati simply means 'wets, sprinkles' Jīva replaces the rare verb with the everyday oneउन्हें 'उक्षति' अर्थात् सींचता है — जीव दुर्लभ क्रिया के स्थान पर प्रचलित क्रिया रख देते हैं
dāmodarāmbhodharewhile the Dāmodara-raincloud is doing this he keeps the locative absolute standing: the showering is the occasion, not the main eventदामोदर रूपी मेघ के (सींचते रहने पर) — वे सप्तमी को वैसी ही बनी रहने देते हैं: सींचना अवसर है, मुख्य बात नहीं
śrīdāmā babhauŚrīdāmā shoneश्रीदामा शोभित हुआ
tat-saṁlagnatayā virejethat is, he gleamed because he was pressed up close against that cloud instrumental of cause; babhau is glossed with vireje, and saṁlagnatā is clinging contact — the shine is borrowed from touching himक्योंकि वह उससे सटा हुआ था, इस कारण विशेष रूप से शोभित हुआ — 'बभौ' का अर्थ 'विरेजे' किया गया, और 'संलग्नता' चिपके रहने का स्पर्श है; कान्ति उसी स्पर्श से उधार मिली है
ity arthaḥthat is the senseयही अर्थ है
ambakāni — the eyes of all; cātakāḥ eva — are the cātakas; tān — them; dāmodarāmbhodhare ukṣati — while the Dāmodara-cloud showers; śrīdāmā babhau — Śrīdāmā shone; tat-saṁlagnatayā vireje — he gleamed from being pressed against him.
Now Jīva walks the words. Ambaka means eyes — everyone's eyes — and those eyes are the cātakas. The cloud showers them. Ukṣati is just 'sprinkles'. And while that showering goes on, Śrīdāmā shone. Jīva presses the point: he shone by being stuck close to that cloud. The light is not his own; it comes off the contact.
वह इस प्रकार है। 'अम्बक' अर्थात् सबके नेत्र ही यहाँ चातक हैं। दामोदर रूपी मेघ उन्हीं को सींचता है — 'उक्षति' का अर्थ 'सिञ्चति' है। उसके सींचते रहने पर श्रीदामा शोभित हुआ, अर्थात् उससे सटे रहने के कारण वह विशेष कान्ति से चमक उठा। यही अर्थ है।

Jīva unpacks the compound word by word. The hairs standing up on him are buds, and they cover him — not sprinkled here and there, but all over. The branches are his own limbs, arms first. And the whole compound means: he in whom these budded branches are. That man is Śrīdāmā.

Viśvanātha runs the same words. Ambaka is everyone's eyes; those eyes are the cātaka birds; the cloud that is Kṛṣṇa showers them. He writes in sati to make the construction plain: 'while he is sprinkling'. And then, at that moment, Śrīdāmā's tree — the body whose limbs are set with buds of standing hair — shone.

Viśvanātha is fixing a syntax problem. Why should the cloud's raining on the birds be the occasion of the tree's shining? Because a tree lives on water and nothing else — which is exactly the cātaka's own nature. So when the tree sees the shower starting overhead for the birds, it thrills in hope of its own share, and that thrill is its blooming. Map it: the cloud is Kṛṣṇa, the water is his smiles, the cātakas are everyone's eyes, the tree is Śrīdāmā. Read that way, the 'while he was sprinkling' clause connects properly to 'the tree shone'. Note where the analogy stops: Viśvanātha does not say the tree got the water — only that it saw the shower begin and hoped.
और इस प्रकार भी। वृक्ष का जीवन भी केवल जल ही है, इसलिए वह चातक के ही स्वधर्म वाला है। आकाश में चातकों के लिए जल-सेचन आरम्भ होते देखकर, उसे पाने की आशा से वह हर्षित हुआ और शोभित हो उठा। इस रीति से सति-सप्तमी का अर्थ ठीक बैठ जाता है। यही भाव है।
sati saptamī is the locative absolute — two words in the locative giving the circumstance, 'while X was doing Y'. The construction needs the main clause to have some real connection to that circumstance; supplying the connection is the whole point of this note.
सति-सप्तमी वही रचना है जिसमें दो पद सप्तमी में रखकर 'जब वह ऐसा कर रहा था' यह परिस्थिति बताई जाती है। इस रचना में मुख्य वाक्य का उस परिस्थिति से कोई वास्तविक सम्बन्ध होना आवश्यक है; वही सम्बन्ध जोड़ देना इस पूरी टिप्पणी का प्रयोजन है।

megha-sādharmyam āha — he states the cloud-likeness; utsiktā udriktā trivali-rūpā śreṣṭha-latā yatra — he in whom the finest creeper is the swollen triple fold; megha-pakṣe — on the cloud reading; yena iti tṛtīyā anya-padārthe jñeyā — 'by which' is to be understood, a bahuvrīhi with the instrumental.

Here Viśvanātha turns the compound over to its second face. First the man: utsiktā means risen, so read 'he in whom the three swollen belly-folds are the choicest creeper.' Then the cloud: keep every syllable, change the relative from 'in whom' to 'by which', and it describes the cloud instead. Both readings sit in the one word — that is the śleṣa, and it is why this verse can call a boy a raincloud without saying 'like'.
अब मेघ के साथ साधर्म्य कहते हैं। 'उत्सिक्त' अर्थात् उभरी हुई। त्रिवली रूपी श्रेष्ठ लता जिसमें हो — यह कृष्ण-पक्ष का विग्रह है। मेघ-पक्ष में उसी बहुव्रीहि में 'येन' कहकर तृतीया जाननी चाहिए।

The second compound gets the same double treatment. Read of Kṛṣṇa: he carries the fragrance of the flower-garland opening on his chest. Read of the cloud: the same word vana- is now a stretch of woodland, and the cloud is what lifts its scent — the smell that comes up off trees when rain hits them. Viśvanātha leaves both standing, one under the other.
