Now the dressing-up. First, every kind of flower ornament. Then the patterns painted on the body with the coloured earths of the hill.
dhātu: in medicine and chemistry it means an element or ore; here it is the soft coloured mineral, the red and yellow stuff of the hillside, used as paint by the cowherd boys.

paṭṭa is woven silk; dukūla is the fine cloth of soft bark-fibre or silk that marks a costly dress. pīta, 'yellow', is Kṛṣṇa's own colour of cloth.

naicikī is a prized cow, a fine young milch cow; caya is the mass of them, the herd. cāraṇam is the causative sense: making them graze.

The yasmin … tādṛśa formula is the standard way of spelling out a bahuvrīhi: the compound does not name the blossoms, it names the garland that has them.

yadyapigranted that — he is conceding a point, and the tathāpi below will answer it yadyapi … tathāpi: concession first, reply afterयद्यपि — पहले स्वीकार, उत्तर आगे 'तथापि' से आएगा
ūṇādāvin the Uṇādi section uṇādau, locative, printed with the following sandhi — 'in the Uṇādi-sūtras', where such nouns are derivedउणादि-सूत्रों में — जहाँ ऐसे शब्दों की सिद्धि दिखाई जाती है (छपे हुए रूप में आगे की सन्धि जुड़ी है)
ujjvala-dattenait was Ujjvaladatta who derived it instrumental of the agent with the passive sādhitaḥउज्ज्वलदत्त के द्वारा — कर्मवाच्य 'साधितः' का कर्ता तृतीया में
mallikā śabda eva sādhitaḥand he established only the word mallikā — that form alone eva shuts the door: mallikā and nothing else'मल्लिका' यही शब्द सिद्ध किया गया है — 'एव' दरवाज़ा बन्द कर देता है, केवल यही रूप, दूसरा नहीं

atra yadyapi — although here; ūṇādau ujjvala-dattena — by Ujjvaladatta in the Uṇādi section; mallikā-śabdaḥ eva sādhitaḥ — only the word mallikā was established; mallī-śabdaḥ tu prāmādikaḥ eva mataḥ — but the word mallī was reckoned a mere blunder
Now a difficulty about the word itself. On the Uṇādi-sūtras, Ujjvaladatta derives only mallikā. The shorter mallī he calls an error, plain and simple. Note the yadyapi: Jīva grants this, and is coming back to it.

Here is his answer. Whatever the grammarian says, the poets do write mallī. He gives three lines where they do. Since the poets have accepted the form, it can stand in this verse too. Usage carries the day against the derivation.

So: long mallī he keeps, because poets use it. Short malli he does not, because nobody uses it. On that ground the variant reading is set aside.
pāṭhāntara is a variant reading in the manuscripts — a different wording of the verse itself, not a different interpretation of it.

yasmin — in which; phullāḥ mallyaḥ — the jasmines are blossomed; tādṛśam mālyam bibhrat — wearing such a garland
Viśvanātha unpacks the same compound: a garland in which the jasmines are open, and he is wearing it.
He gives the resolution in the same words Jīva uses, only putting bibhrat where Jīva has the verse's own dadhat; both simply mean 'wearing'.
