paugaṇḍaṁ ca — and paugaṇḍa; tridhā bhavet — is to be reckoned in three ways; ādyaṁ — a first; madhyaṁ — a middle; tathā śeṣaṁ — and likewise a last.
paugaṇḍam — पौगण्ड अवस्था; ca — और; tridhā — तीन प्रकार की; bhavet — मानी जाए; ādyam — पहली; madhyam — बीच की; tathā — और वैसे ही; śeṣam — अन्तिम।
Now the age called paugaṇḍa. It is counted in three parts: an early one, a middle one, and a closing one. The lead-in says only atha paugaṇḍam — 'now, paugaṇḍa' — so this line is the heading for everything that follows.
पौगण्ड अवस्था तीन प्रकार की माननी चाहिए। पहली, बीच की और अन्तिम — ये तीन भेद हैं।
paugaṇḍa is the second of the boyhood ages in this scheme — kaumāra, then paugaṇḍa, then kaiśora. Here Rūpa splits paugaṇḍa itself into three phases so that the bodily signs can be assigned to each.
इस क्रम में पौगण्ड बालक की दूसरी अवस्था है — पहले कौमार, फिर पौगण्ड, फिर किशोर। यहाँ रूप गोस्वामी पौगण्ड के भीतर ही तीन भाग करते हैं, जिससे शरीर के चिह्न अलग-अलग भाग में बाँटे जा सकें।

The signs of the first phase: the lower lip and such parts turn a fine red, and the belly grows slim. The lead-in is tatra ādyaṁ paugaṇḍam — 'of these three, the first paugaṇḍa'.

mukunda — हे मुकुन्द; te — तुम्हारा; tundam — पेट; śanakaiḥ — धीरे-धीरे; aśvattha-patra-śriyam — पीपल के पत्ते की-सी शोभा; vindati — पा रहा है।
O Mukunda, your belly is slowly taking the shape and shine of an aśvattha leaf — broad above, drawn fine below. The speakers are watching a change they had not seen on their last visit.
हे मुकुन्द! तुम्हारा पेट धीरे-धीरे पीपल के पत्ते की-सी शोभा पा रहा है।
An udāharaṇa for the first paugaṇḍa just defined (3.3.62) — the lead-in is only yathā, 'as follows'. Viśvanātha glosses tundam as udaram, 'the belly'. Note the syntax: tundam, kaṇṭham and the rest stand in the accusative through the stanza, and the one nominative subject, lakṣmīr ādhunikī, 'this newly arrived beauty', does not arrive until the last line.

Jīva sets the scene. Bards from outside Vraja had visited earlier; now they are back, and this is what they say. That is why the beauty is called 'brand new' — they are measuring it against what they saw last time.
'तुन्दम्' यह पद्य उन परदेशी वन्दीजनों का कथन है। वे पहले भी यहाँ आ चुके थे, और अब फिर आए हैं।
vandin is a court bard, the singer who greets and praises a person on arrival. Jīva has them masculine, vandinām; Viśvanātha below reads vandinīnām, women bards. The two readings stand side by side.
'वन्दी' दरबार का स्तुतिपाठक होता है, जो आए हुए का स्वागत करके गुण गाता है। जीव गोस्वामी इन्हें पुरुष मानकर 'वन्दिनाम्' पढ़ते हैं; आगे विश्वनाथ 'वन्दिनीनाम्' पढ़ते हैं, अर्थात् स्त्री-वन्दिनियाँ। दोनों पाठ साथ-साथ खड़े रहते हैं।

kambuvad itias for the word kambuvat'कम्बुवत्' यह जो पद है, उसके विषय में
tena tulyaṁ kriyā ced vatiḥPāṇini's rule: the suffix -vat comes in the sense 'equal to that', provided the likeness is a likeness of action Pā. 5.1.115; the condition kriyā ced is what makes the usage here need comment'उसके समान हो और वह समानता क्रिया की हो, तब वति प्रत्यय होता है' — पाणिनि ५.१.११५; 'क्रिया हो तभी' यही शर्त यहाँ अड़चन खड़ी करती है
evaṁ-lakṣaṇe’pieven though the rule is framed with that restriction api concedes the difficulty — the comparison here is of shape, not of action, yet the form standsऐसा लक्षण होने पर भी — 'अपि' कठिनाई को स्वीकार कर लेता है, क्योंकि यहाँ समानता आकृति की है, क्रिया की नहीं, फिर भी रूप वैसा ही बना रहता है
kambuvad-grīvāyā udgamawhat is meant is the rising of a neck like a conchशंख जैसी गरदन का उभरना
ity arthaḥthat is the senseयही अर्थ है
kambuvad iti — on kambuvat; tena tulyaṁ kriyā ced vatiḥ — 'the suffix -vat in the sense of likeness, if it is likeness of action'; evaṁ-lakṣaṇe’pi — even with the rule so stated; kambuvad-grīvāyā udgamaḥ — the rising of a conch-like neck; ity arthaḥ — is the meaning.
kambuvad iti — 'कम्बुवत्' इस पद पर; tena tulyaṁ kriyā ced vatiḥ — 'तेन तुल्यं क्रिया चेद् वतिः' यह सूत्र है; evaṁ-lakṣaṇe’pi — ऐसा लक्षण होने पर भी; kambuvad-grīvāyā udgama — शंख जैसी गरदन का उभार; ity arthaḥ — यही अर्थ है।
Jīva stops on kambuvat. Pāṇini gives -vat for comparison only when what is compared is an action. Here the likeness is of shape — a neck like a conch. Jīva grants the wording of the rule and still takes the sense as intended: the neck rising up conch-like.
'कम्बुवत्' पद पर सूत्र है — 'तेन तुल्यं क्रिया चेद् वतिः', अर्थात् समानता क्रिया की हो तभी वति प्रत्यय होता है। ऐसा लक्षण होने पर भी यहाँ अर्थ यही लिया जाता है कि शंख जैसी गरदन का उभार हो रहा है।
Why cited: Pāṇini 5.1.115 is quoted to state the rule governing the comparative suffix -vat, so that the reader sees the difficulty in kambuvat before Jīva settles its sense.
क्यों उद्धृत: पाणिनि ५.१.११५ इसलिए उद्धृत किया गया है कि वति प्रत्यय का नियम सामने आ जाए और पाठक 'कम्बुवत्' की अड़चन पहले देख ले; उसके बाद ही जीव गोस्वामी उसका अर्थ ठहराते हैं।

Jīva reads sā kāpi as a confession, not a vagueness: this beauty cannot be described. The poet reaches for 'some beauty or other' because no word will hold it.

Viśvanātha gives the same setting as Jīva, with two additions of his own: he marks the gap — some days went by between the visits — and he makes the speakers women, vandinī. Jīva's word was vandin, masculine. The gap explains 'brand new': they are seeing the body against a remembered picture.
