L1definition
ujjvalo’yaṁ viśeṣeṇa sadā narmokti-lālasaḥ ||
ujjvalaḥUjjvala — that is his nameउज्ज्वल — प्रिय-नर्म सखाओं में गिनाया गया एक सखा का नाम; और यही शब्द 'देदीप्यमान, चमकीला' भी कहता है
ayaṁthis one here, the one just named picks up the last name in the running list of priya-narma friends at 3.3.43 — subalārjuna-gandharvās te vasantojjvalādayaḥयह — अभी-अभी गिनाई गई सूची में जिसका नाम आया, वही
viśeṣeṇastands out from the rest in one thingविशेष रूप से — औरों की अपेक्षा कुछ अधिक ही
sadāand always, never off dutyसदा — किसी एक अवसर पर नहीं, हर समय
ayam ujjvalaḥ — this Ujjvala; viśeṣeṇa — above the others; sadā — always; narma-ukti-lālasaḥ — is hungry for joking talk
This is Ujjvala. One thing marks him off from the others: he is always hungry for a joke. Narma-ukti is teasing talk. That craving never leaves him.
ujjvala is also the ordinary word for "blazing, brilliant", so the name reads as a description as well. lālasa is stronger than "fond of" — it is a craving, a hunger.

sphurad-atanu-taraṅgāvardhitānalpa-velaḥ
sphurad-atanu-taraṅgāvardhitānalpa-velaḥsurging waves of Kāma have broken through his boundary, and no small boundary at that — while on the water side, swelling mighty waves have raised his great flood of water one long bahuvrīhi describing tvaṁ samudraḥ in L4. It puns three times over: atanu = Kāma / "not slender, huge"; āvardhita = "cut through" / "swelled"; velā = "limit" / "water". The commentators take each pair apart below.
sphurat-atanu-taraṅga-āvardhita-analpa-velaḥ — you, whose great boundary has been cut through by the surging waves of Kāma (water side: whose vast waters have been swelled by the surging mighty waves)
The illustration begins. It is one long address to Kṛṣṇa, and every word of it works twice — once about him, once about the sea. First word: surging waves have broken a boundary, and it was not a small one. Read it of the ocean and it says the opposite kind of thing — the great waves have swelled its waters.
An udāharaṇa of the narma-ukti-lālasaḥ just defined in 3.3.50 — a specimen of the joking talk itself, spoken to Kṛṣṇa (addressed as aghahara in L5). The whole verse is a śleṣa: one string of words, two readings running side by side, and the joke lives in the overlap.

sumadhura-rasa-rūpo durgamāvāra-pāraḥ |
sumadhura-rasa-rūpaḥyour very form is the sweetest rasa (the sweet mood) — on the water side, your water tastes very sweetजिसका स्वरूप ही अति मधुर रस है — समुद्र-पक्ष में मीठे जल वाला, कृष्ण-पक्ष में माधुर्य-रस-स्वरूप
durgamāvāra-pāraḥand neither the near bank nor the far bank of you can be got at durgama + āvāra + pāra: āvāra is the shore on this side, pāra the shore on the far side. Of Kṛṣṇa: no one reaches his limit from any direction.
su-madhura-rasa-rūpaḥ — whose form is the sweetest rasa; durgama-āvāra-pāraḥ — whose near shore and far shore are alike beyond reaching
Second word: his very form is the sweetest rasa. Say it of water and it means the taste is sweet. Third: you cannot get to the bank on this side or the bank on that side. Say it of the sea and it means you cannot cross it. Say it of Kṛṣṇa and it means nobody ever reaches the end of him.

jagati — in this world; yuvati-jātiḥ — the class of young women; nimnagā — is a river; tvam — you; samudraḥ — are the ocean
Now the joke is stated flat out. In this world, young women are rivers. You are the sea.
nimna-gā means "going to the low place" — the word for river already carries the direction of travel, and that is what the last line will cash in.

kṛṣṇa-pakṣe—vardhitā chinnā analpā velā maryādā yena |
kṛṣṇa-pakṣetake first the side of the pun that speaks about Kṛṣṇa locative: "in the reading where…" — the standard way a commentator opens one half of a śleṣaकृष्ण-पक्ष में — जिस पाठ में यह कृष्ण के विषय में कहा जाता है, उसमें
vardhitāthe word vardhitā in the verse'वर्धिता' का अर्थ यहाँ
chinnāmeans cut through, broken — not "swelled"काट डाली गई, छिन्न कर दी गई
analpāand it was no small oneजो थोड़ी नहीं, बड़ी है
velāthe word velā'वेला' अर्थात्
maryādāmeans the boundary, the line of proper conductमर्यादा, हद
yenaby whom — so the whole compound describes the one who did the breaking yena marks it as a bahuvrīhi: "he by whom…", i.e. the tvam of the verseजिसके द्वारा — इसी 'येन' से यह बहुव्रीहि बनता है, अर्थात् 'वह, जिसने', यानी श्लोक का 'तू'
kṛṣṇa-pakṣe — on the Kṛṣṇa reading; vardhitā — i.e. chinnā, cut through; analpā velā — the boundary, and a large one; maryādā — that is, the limit of decorum; yena — by whom
Jīva takes the Kṛṣṇa side first. Here vardhitā does not mean "increased". It means chinnā — cut through. And velā does not mean the shoreline. It means maryādā — the boundary of proper conduct. So the compound says: he by whom a boundary, and a large one, has been cut through.
Two words are punning at once. vardh can mean "cut" (as a barber cuts hair) as well as "grow"; velā can mean the shore-line and so, by extension, a limit. Jīva does not argue for either — he simply supplies the sense that the Kṛṣṇa reading needs.

samudra-pakṣe — on the ocean reading; vardhitā — i.e. edhitā, swelled; velā — i.e. jalam, the water; yena — by whom
Now the ocean side of the same words. Here vardhitā keeps its usual sense — edhitā, swelled up. And velā means the water. So: the ocean whose abundant water has been swelled by its own surging waves. Both readings stand together; neither cancels the other.
This is the second layer of the śleṣa, not a rejected first attempt. The verse means both at once — that is exactly how the joke is built.

velā syāt tīra-nīrayor ity amaraḥ ||
tīra-nīrayoḥin two senses — "shore" and "water" locative dual: the lexicon's way of saying "in the senses of X and Y"'तीर' और 'नीर' — इन दो अर्थों में (कोशकार की भाषा में 'इन अर्थों में')
iti amaraḥso says Amara — the Amara-koṣa dictionary— ऐसा अमरकोश कहता है
velā syāt — velā is used; tīra-nīrayoḥ — in the senses of shore and of water; iti amaraḥ — thus the Amara-koṣa
He backs the double sense with the dictionary. Amara lists velā under two meanings: shore and water. One word, two senses, both on the books.
Why cited: Lexical proof that velā legitimately carries both senses, so the one word can serve the Kṛṣṇa reading (shore, hence limit) and the ocean reading (water) at the same time — the pun is licensed, not invented.
Jīva glossed velā as maryādā, "limit", which is not one of Amara's two words; it comes off tīra, "shore" — a shore is where a thing stops.

Viśvanātha quotes a verse. Ujjvala makes a joke: he calls him "hari". Kṛṣṇa hears it.
Why cited: Adduced to show the man just defined actually at work — Ujjvala joking with Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa taking it — so "always hungry for a joke" is not a bare label.
hari carries other senses besides the name (monkey, lion, thief). The commentary does not say where the sting lies; it says only that the word itself was the jest.

Why cited: The second half of the same quoted verse: it supplies Kṛṣṇa's answer to the jest, and turns the whole scene into a blessing on the reader.
A benediction (āśīrvāda) — the verse hands the listener the picture itself as the thing that purifies.

nimnagā means a river. Nothing more complicated than that.
The word is built as nimna-gā, "going to the low place". That literal shape is what makes the last line work: a river has only one direction to go.

Two small words get fixed. tat is short for tasmāt, "therefore" — the line is a conclusion drawn from the one before. And eti is prāpnoti, "reaches". So: therefore this whole class of young women reaches you, with their whole being.
The verse as printed reads sarvādhvanā eva, "by every road and no other"; Viśvanātha's gloss here says sarvātmanā, "with their whole being". The two are left standing as they are — do not smooth one into the other.

Now the young-women side. atanu is Kandarpa, Kāma — so the phrase means: she in whom a wave of Kāma is surging. And the rasa in the next word is the sweet mood.
atanu, "the bodiless one", is a name of Kāma; Viśvanātha names him Kandarpa outright. On the water side the same word is only "not small", so the waves are just big waves. Note also that he applies these words to the women, whereas the verse hangs them on tvaṁ samudraḥ.

Viśvanātha's three pakṣas do not line up one-to-one: the water half he calls nadī-pakṣa, the river, while the verse itself says tvaṁ samudraḥ, "you are the ocean". Left as he wrote it.

tīra-nīrayoḥin the two senses "shore" and "water" locative dual — the lexicon's formula for "in the senses of X and Y"'तीर' और 'नीर' — इन दो अर्थों में (कोश की यही कहने की रीति है)
iti amaraḥso says Amara — the Amara-koṣa dictionary— ऐसा अमरकोश कहता है
velā syāt — velā is used; tīra-nīrayoḥ — in the senses of shore and of water; iti amaraḥ — thus the Amara-koṣa
He closes with the dictionary. Amara gives velā two meanings: shore and water. The double reading is on the books, not manufactured.
Why cited: Lexical warrant for the pun on velā — the one word can carry the limit (from "shore") on the Kṛṣṇa reading and the water on the river reading, so both halves of the śleṣa are legitimate.
The sense maryādā, "limit", used just above is not one of Amara's two words; it is drawn out of tīra, "shore" — a shore is where a thing stops.
