śaktāsmīty atra katham ity antam ekaṁ vākyaṁ sametīty antam anyat |
śaktāsmīty atrain this verse, the one beginning śaktāsmi the standard way of naming a verse — quote its opening word'शक्तास्मि' से आरम्भ होने वाले इस श्लोक में — श्लोक का नाम उसके पहले शब्द से ही लिया जाता है
katham ity antamthe stretch that runs up to the word katham ā-antam, 'having katham as its end' — the boundary is inclusive'कथम्' तक — यानी 'कथम्' को भीतर लेते हुए वहीं तक
sametīty antam anyatand the stretch ending with sameti is a second oneऔर 'समेति' तक का भाग दूसरा वाक्य है
śaktāsmi iti atra — in the verse beginning śaktāsmi; katham iti antam — what ends with katham; ekaṁ vākyam — is one sentence; sameti iti antam — what ends with sameti; anyat — is another
Jīva starts by cutting the verse into sentences. Read 'śaktāsmi mānam avituṁ katham' as one sentence, stopping at katham. Then 'ujjvalo 'yaṁ dūtaḥ sameti' is a second sentence, stopping at sameti. Getting these breaks right is what keeps the verse from running together.

śeṣam — the remainder; aparam — is another
The rest of the verse is a third sentence. So the verse is three statements, not one long one.

lajjā-kula-dharma-bhayānāmof shyness, family standing, duty and fear Jīva's list has four items in this order; Viśvanātha lists them as lajjā-kula-bhaya-dharma — the two are not to be squared with each otherलज्जा, कुल, धर्म और भय — इन चारों में से

na vṛṣasyati na kāmayatedoes not crave — which is to say, does not desire him'न वृषस्यति' का अर्थ है 'कामना नहीं करती'
kintuon the contraryअपितु — उलटे

ity arthaḥthat is the sense of the lineयही अर्थ है
sāpatrapā iti ādau — in the passage beginning sāpatrapā; yadyapi — although; lajjā-kula-dharma-bhayānām ekatare api sati — if even one of shyness, family, duty and fear were present; maryādā-laṅghanaṁ na syāt — propriety would not be broken; tathāpi — still; teṣu sarveṣu api satsu — when all of them are present; kā — which girl; gopa-vṛṣaṁ gopa-śreṣṭhaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ — the bull of the cowherds, the best of cowherds, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; na vṛṣasyati na kāmayate — does not crave, does not desire; kintu — rather; sarvā eva kāmayate — every one desires him; iti arthaḥ — that is the meaning
Jīva reads the three api's as a piece of reasoning. Normally, any one of these four — shyness, family standing, duty, fear — would be enough to stop a girl from stepping over the line. Even one. Yet here all four are standing together, and still: which girl does not want him? None. gopa-vṛṣam means the best of the cowherds, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and vṛṣasyati means desires. So the force of the question is the opposite of a question — every single one of them wants him.
