aruṇāmbaram uccalekṣaṇaṁ
aruṇāmbaramhe wears a garment the colour of dawn — red aruṇa = the reddish glow of sunrise; ambara = cloth. A bahuvrīhi, "the one whose cloth is red", accusative — it and everything after it wait for ujjvalam bhaje in line 4जिसका वस्त्र अरुण अर्थात् प्रातःकालीन लालिमा के रंग का है — उसको; यह विशेषण द्वितीया में है और चौथी पंक्ति के 'भजे' की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है
uccalekṣaṇaṁhis eyes never settle — the glance is always in motion uccala (ud + cala) = stirring, restless; īkṣaṇa = eye, glance. Bahuvrīhi again, accusative. A restless eye is the standard mark of the playful, quick-witted friendजिसकी आँखें चंचल हैं — उसको; 'उच्चल' अर्थात् उछलती-फिरती, स्थिर न रहने वाली दृष्टि, जो विनोदी और चतुर सखा का पहचाना हुआ चिह्न है
aruṇāmbaram — [him] whose cloth is dawn-red; uccala-īkṣaṇam — [him] whose glance is never still.
aruṇāmbaram — जिसका वस्त्र अरुण है, उसको; uccalekṣaṇaṁ — जिसकी दृष्टि चंचल है, उसको
The verse opens with two touches of the picture. His cloth is red, the red of sunrise. And his eyes are restless — the glance keeps moving. Both words are accusative; they are describing someone whose name will not arrive until the last line.
उसका वस्त्र प्रातःकाल की लालिमा-सा अरुण है। उसकी आँखें एक जगह टिकती नहीं, चंचल रहती हैं। ये दोनों विशेषण द्वितीया विभक्ति में हैं। इनका क्रिया-पद अभी आया नहीं; वह चौथी पंक्ति में 'भजे' के रूप में आएगा।
An udāharaṇa of ujjvalasya rūpam — "the appearance of Ujjvala" — the friend named in the list of priya-narma-vayasyas at 3.3.43 (subala-arjuna-gandharvās te vasanta-ujjvala-ādayaḥ). The whole verse is one long description hanging on the single verb bhaje, "I worship", at the end.

madhu-puṣpa-balibhiḥ prasādhitam |
madhu-puṣpa-balibhiḥthey bring him madhu flowers as an offering, and with those instrumental of means — "by means of". bali = a tribute, something presented; madhu-puṣpa = the madhu blossom. Viśvanātha will fix which flower is meant in his first noteमधु-पुष्पों की भेंट के द्वारा — तृतीया साधन में है; 'बलि' अर्थात् आगे रखी जाने वाली भेंट। कौन-सा पुष्प अभिप्रेत है, यह विश्वनाथ अपनी पहली टीका में निश्चित करेंगे
prasādhitamhe has been decked out, dressed and adorned from head to foot pra-sādhita, past passive participle, accusative — the dressing is done to him. The pra- makes it thorough: not one ornament but the whole toiletteजिसका शृंगार किया गया है — उसको; कर्मवाच्य में है, अतः सजाने का काम किसी और ने किया; 'प्र' उपसर्ग से पूरा शृंगार सूचित होता है, एक ही आभूषण नहीं
madhu-puṣpa-balibhiḥ — with offerings of madhu flowers; prasādhitam — [him who has been] fully decked out.
madhu-puṣpa-balibhiḥ — मधु-पुष्पों की भेंट के द्वारा; prasādhitam — जिसका पूरा शृंगार किया गया है, उसको
Second touch: he has been dressed up, and the ornaments are flowers. Offerings of madhu blossoms are what adorn him. Note the word bali — these flowers are not just picked, they are presented to him, the way one presents an offering.
मधु-पुष्पों की भेंट से उसका शृंगार किया गया है। 'प्र' उपसर्ग बताता है कि यह एक-दो आभूषण नहीं, पूरी सज्जा है। कर्मवाच्य होने से यह भी स्पष्ट है कि सजाने वाले दूसरे हैं।
bali in ordinary Sanskrit is a tribute or an oblation — what is set before a king or a deity. Here it keeps that flavour: the flowers are brought to him as a gift, not merely worn.
'बलि' शब्द सामान्य संस्कृत में भेंट या उपहार का वाचक है — जो राजा या देवता के आगे रखा जाता है। यहाँ भी वही भाव बना हुआ है: वे पुष्प उसे उपहार-रूप में अर्पित किए गए हैं, केवल पहनाए नहीं गए।

hari-nīla-ruciṁ hari-priyaṁ
hari-nīla-ruciṁhe glows with the deep blue sheen of a sapphire hari-nīla is the ordinary name for the sapphire; ruci = sheen, glow. Bahuvrīhi, accusative — "the one whose lustre is that of sapphire"जिसकी कान्ति इन्द्रनील मणि जैसी है — उसको; 'हरि-नील' नीलमणि का प्रसिद्ध नाम है और 'रुचि' अर्थात् चमक, आभा; द्वितीया में
hari-priyaṁand Hari — Kṛṣṇa — holds him dear accusative again, still describing him; priya = dear, beloved. The same syllables hari- that just meant "sapphire-blue" now mean Hari himself — one sound, two senses, side by side in a single lineजो हरि को प्रिय है — उसको; यह भी द्वितीया में, उसी का वर्णन। अभी-अभी जिन 'हरि' अक्षरों का अर्थ नीलमणि था, वे ही यहाँ स्वयं हरि हैं — एक ही शब्द, एक ही पंक्ति में दो अर्थ
hari-nīla-ruciṁ — [him] whose glow is a sapphire's; hari-priyaṁ — [him who is] dear to Hari.
hari-nīla-ruciṁ — जिसकी आभा नीलमणि-सी है, उसको; hari-priyaṁ — जो हरि को प्रिय है, उसको
His body has the dark-blue shine of sapphire, and he is dear to Kṛṣṇa. Read the line aloud and you hear what Rūpa is doing: hari-nīla, hari-priya. The first hari is the gem-name — hari-nīla is simply the word for a sapphire. The second hari is Hari, Kṛṣṇa himself. The same sound, turned to a new meaning inside one breath. And the two senses lean on each other: his colour is Kṛṣṇa's own colour, and he is Kṛṣṇa's own beloved.
उसकी कान्ति नीलमणि जैसी है। और वह हरि का प्रिय है। एक ही पंक्ति में 'हरि' शब्द दो बार आया है — पहले नीलमणि के अर्थ में, फिर स्वयं भगवान् के अर्थ में। दोनों विशेषण द्वितीया में हैं, अब भी उसी का वर्णन चल रहा है।

maṇi-hārojjvalam ujjvalaṁ bhaje ||
maṇi-hārojjvalama necklace of jewels sets him blazing maṇi-hāra = a jewelled necklace; ujjvala = blazing, brilliant. Accusative, one more descriptionजो मणियों के हार से देदीप्यमान है — उसको; 'मणि-हार' अर्थात् रत्नजड़ित हार और 'उज्ज्वल' अर्थात् जगमगाता हुआ; द्वितीया में, एक और वर्णन
ujjvalaṁ— Ujjvala, and that is his name: "the blazing one" accusative, the object of bhaje. The word has just been used as a plain adjective at the end of the previous compound; here the same word is the name. Both senses are live — he is called Ujjvala and he is in fact ablazeउज्ज्वल को — 'भजे' का कर्म; अभी पिछले समास के अन्त में यही शब्द साधारण विशेषण था, यहाँ वही नाम है। दोनों अर्थ जीवित हैं — उसका नाम भी उज्ज्वल है और वह वस्तुतः जगमगा भी रहा है
bhajeI worship him first person present — the one finite verb in the whole verse. Every accusative from line 1 onward has been waiting for itमैं भजता हूँ — उत्तम पुरुष एकवचन, वर्तमान; पूरे श्लोक की एकमात्र तिङन्त क्रिया, जिसकी प्रतीक्षा पहली पंक्ति से सब द्वितीयान्त पद कर रहे थे
maṇi-hāra-ujjvalam — [him] blazing with a jewelled necklace; ujjvalaṁ — Ujjvala; bhaje — I worship.
maṇi-hārojjvalam — जो मणि-हार से जगमगाता है, उसको; ujjvalaṁ — उज्ज्वल को; bhaje — मैं भजता हूँ
A jewelled necklace makes him blaze — ujjvala. And then, immediately, the same word again: ujjvalam, Ujjvala, which is who he is. The name is the description. Rūpa sets the two side by side so you cannot miss it: he is called "the blazing one", and here he is, blazing. Then the verb lands at last — bhaje, I worship him. Everything from the red cloth onward was hanging on this one word.
मणियों के हार से वह जगमगा रहा है। ऐसे उज्ज्वल को मैं भजता हूँ। 'भजे' ही इस पूरे श्लोक की एकमात्र क्रिया है। पहली पंक्ति से जितने भी द्वितीयान्त विशेषण चले आ रहे थे, वे सब यहाँ आकर इसी क्रिया से जुड़ जाते हैं।
The doubled ujjvala is a yamaka: the same word repeated in two senses, first as an adjective at the end of maṇi-hārojjvalam, then as the proper name. Keeping it in IAST preserves the play, which "brilliant" alone would flatten.
'उज्ज्वल' शब्द की यह पुनरावृत्ति यमक है — वही शब्द दो अर्थों में दुहराया गया: पहले 'मणि-हारोज्ज्वलम्' के अन्त में विशेषण-रूप में, फिर संज्ञा अर्थात् नाम-रूप में। शब्द को ज्यों-का-त्यों रखने पर ही यह चमत्कार बना रहता है; केवल 'देदीप्यमान' कह देने से वह मिट जाता।

madhu-puṣpeti vasanta-kālīna-puṣpāvalībhiḥ |
madhu-puṣpetias for the verse's word madhu-puṣpa — madhu-puṣpa + iti: he quotes the word he is about to explain. iti is the commentator's quotation mark, not part of the sense'मधु-पुष्प' इत्यादि जो कहा गया — अर्थात् जिस पद की व्याख्या करनी है, उसे टीकाकार पहले उद्धृत करते हैं; यहाँ 'इति' उद्धरण का चिह्न मात्र है, अर्थ का अंग नहीं
vasanta-kālīna-puṣpāvalībhiḥhe means, with masses of flowers that bloom in spring instrumental plural, matched to the verse's balibhiḥ — the gloss steps straight into the case of the word it replaces. vasanta-kālīna = belonging to the spring season; āvalī = a row, a whole clusterवसन्त ऋतु में खिलने वाले पुष्पों की पंक्तियों के द्वारा — तृतीया बहुवचन, ठीक मूल के 'बलिभिः' के अनुरूप; 'आवली' अर्थात् पंक्ति या पूरा समूह
madhu-puṣpa iti — [the word] madhu-puṣpa [means]; vasanta-kālīna-puṣpa-āvalībhiḥ — with clusters of springtime flowers.
madhu-puṣpeti — 'मधु-पुष्प' इत्यादि पद का अर्थ यह है; vasanta-kālīna-puṣpāvalībhiḥ — वसन्त-कालीन पुष्पों की पंक्तियों के द्वारा
Viśvanātha settles which flower is meant. madhu, he says, is spring — so madhu-puṣpa is not one named blossom but the flowers of the spring season, and āvalī says they come in masses, not singly. Notice how he pitches the gloss in the instrumental, the same case as balibhiḥ in the verse, so it drops into the sentence without any repair.
विश्वनाथ पहले मूल का पद उद्धृत करते हैं, फिर उसकी जगह अपना शब्द रखते हैं। उनके अनुसार 'मधु-पुष्प' का अर्थ है वसन्त ऋतु के पुष्पों की पंक्तियाँ। ध्यान दीजिए, वे अपनी व्याख्या भी उसी तृतीया विभक्ति में देते हैं जिसमें मूल का 'बलिभिः' है।
madhu is one of the ordinary names for spring (the month Caitra), alongside its commoner sense "honey". Viśvanātha chooses the season, not the honey.
'मधु' वसन्त का — विशेषतः चैत्र मास का — एक प्रसिद्ध नाम है; उसका अधिक प्रचलित अर्थ 'शहद' भी है। विश्वनाथ यहाँ ऋतु वाला अर्थ लेते हैं, शहद वाला नहीं।

prasādhitaṁ kṛta-bhūṣaṇam ||
prasādhitaṁthe verse's word prasādhitam he repeats the verse's own word, accusative, before replacing it'प्रसाधितम्' — मूल का ही शब्द, द्वितीया में, जिसे दुहराकर वे आगे उसकी जगह अपना पद रखते हैं
kṛta-bhūṣaṇammeans: his ornaments have been put on him kṛta = made, done; bhūṣaṇa = ornament. Accusative, matching the word it explains. The passive is the point — someone else does the decoratingजिसका आभूषण-धारण करा दिया गया हो — उसको; 'कृत' अर्थात् किया हुआ और 'भूषण' अर्थात् गहना; द्वितीया में, व्याख्येय पद के अनुरूप। कर्मवाच्य ही यहाँ तात्पर्य है — सजाने वाला कोई और है
prasādhitaṁ — [the word] prasādhitam [means]; kṛta-bhūṣaṇam — one whose ornaments have been put on.
prasādhitaṁ — 'प्रसाधितम्' पद का अर्थ; kṛta-bhūṣaṇam — जिसका शृंगार दूसरों ने कर दिया है, उसको
The second gloss is short. prasādhitam means kṛta-bhūṣaṇam — he has been given his ornaments. Both words are passive, and that is what Viśvanātha is holding on to: Ujjvala does not decorate himself. Others bring the spring flowers and dress him in them.
'प्रसाधितम्' का अर्थ है — जिसे आभूषणों से सजा दिया गया हो। विश्वनाथ का पद भी उसी द्वितीया विभक्ति में है। और यहाँ भी कर्मवाच्य ही मुख्य है: सजाने का काम स्वयं उसने नहीं, दूसरों ने किया है।
