vayasya-goṣṭhyām akhileṅgiteṣu
vayasya-goṣṭhyāmin the circle of friends, right in the middle of the group of boys his own age locative of place; vayasya is "one of the same age", so the goṣṭhī is the crowd of age-mates, not eldersसमवयस्क सखाओं की मण्डली में — 'वयस्य' का अर्थ है समान अवस्था वाला, इसलिए यह गोष्ठी हमउम्र बालकों की है, बड़े-बूढ़ों की नहीं
akhila-iṅgiteṣuin every kind of hint and gesture — a raised eyebrow, a glance, a movement of the hand locative of the sphere of skill, going with viśāradāyām in the next line: skilled *in* all gesturesसब प्रकार के संकेतों-चेष्टाओं के विषय में — यह सप्तमी अगली पंक्ति के 'विशारदायाम्' से जुड़ती है, अर्थात् समस्त इंगितों में निपुण
vayasya-goṣṭhyām — in the circle of friends; akhila-iṅgiteṣu — in all gestures and hints … (the word that governs this locative, viśāradāyām, comes in the next line).
The verse opens by putting us in the crowd. This is not a private corner; it is the whole gathering of Kṛṣṇa's age-mates. And the first thing said about that gathering is what they are good at: gestures — every hint, glance and signal there is. Hold that, because the sentence has not yet said what it is going to do with it.
The lead-in is asya sakhyaṁ, yathā — "his friendship, as follows" — so this is the udāharaṇa illustrating the sakhya of the friend just treated. The verse names that friend itself: Subala.

viśāradāyām api mādhavasya |
viśāradāyāmwhich is expert, which misses nothing feminine locative agreeing with goṣṭhyām — it is the *assembly* that is expert, not any one boyजो निपुण है, उस (मण्डली) में — स्त्रीलिंग सप्तमी 'गोष्ठ्याम्' से मिलती है, अतः निपुण समूह है, कोई एक बालक नहीं
apieven so — even though they were that expert api is the hinge of the whole verse: it concedes the friends' skill only to say that it failed hereफिर भी / तो भी — यही पूरे श्लोक की कील है; सखाओं की निपुणता मान तो ली जाती है, पर केवल यह कहने के लिए कि वहाँ वह काम न आई
mādhavasyabelonging to Mādhava, Mādhava's own genitive held over until vārtā in the last line — "a talk of Mādhava's"माधव का / माधव की — यह षष्ठी अन्तिम पंक्ति के 'वार्ता' तक टिकी रहती है, अर्थात् 'माधव की एक बात'
vayasya-goṣṭhyām — in the circle of friends; akhila-iṅgiteṣu viśāradāyām — expert in every gesture; api — even though; mādhavasya — Mādhava's …
Now the concession lands. These friends are experts at reading signs — that is their trade. api says "even so." Whatever is coming next got past people who could not normally be got past. And the talk about to be described is Mādhava's own.
Praising the audience first is a standard way of raising the stakes: the harder the readers, the more remarkable that they could not read this.

anyair durūhā subalena sārdhaṁ
anyaiḥby the others — by everyone else in that circle instrumental agent with durūhā: they are the ones who tried and failedदूसरों के द्वारा — यह तृतीया 'दुरूहा' का कर्ता है; प्रयत्न उन्होंने ही किया और वे ही चूक गए
durūhāimpossible to work out, not to be guessed dur- + ūh-, "hard to reason out"; the gerundive keeps it passive — hard *to be* figured outजिसका ऊहापोह कठिन हो, जो तर्क से पकड़ में न आए — 'दुर्' और 'ऊह्' से बना; कर्मवाच्य भाव बना रहता है, अर्थात् समझी जाना ही कठिन
subalena sārdhamtogether with Subala, with him and no one else instrumental with sārdham — the exchange has exactly two partiesसुबल के साथ — 'सार्धम्' के योग में तृतीया; इस आदान-प्रदान में ठीक दो ही पक्ष हैं
anyaiḥ durūhā — not to be made out by the others; subalena sārdham — together with Subala …
Here is the point of the verse. Everyone else in the circle is shut out — anyaiḥ durūhā, they cannot crack it. And the one person who is not shut out is named: Subala. The whole line works by contrast, all of them on one side and one friend on the other.
This is what makes the verse an illustration of sakhya. Closeness is being shown, not stated: it is measured by what two friends can say to each other in a room that cannot follow them.

saṁjñā-mayī kāpi babhūva vārtā ||
saṁjñā-mayīmade entirely of signs, carried on in signals alone -maya, "consisting of" — not talk helped along by gestures but talk with nothing in it but gesturesसंकेतों से ही बनी हुई — '-मय' का अर्थ है 'जिसका बनना ही उसी से हो'; अर्थात् वह बात संकेतों की सहायता से चलने वाली नहीं, बल्कि संकेतों के सिवा उसमें कुछ था ही नहीं
kā apisome talk or other — there is no naming it the indefinite kā api is doing rasa-work: it withholds the content, and that withholding is the charmकोई एक अनिर्वचनीय — यह अनिश्चयवाचक पद रस का काम करता है; वह बात क्या थी, यह छिपा रखता है, और वही छिपाव ही माधुर्य है
babhūvatook place, went on between themहुई / हो गई
vārtāa conversation, an exchange of news the subject at last; mādhavasya from L2 and subalena sārdham from L3 both attach hereबात, वार्तालाप — अन्त में जाकर कर्ता प्रकट होता है; दूसरी पंक्ति का 'माधवस्य' और तीसरी का 'सुबलेन सार्धम्' दोनों इसी से जुड़ते हैं
mādhavasya — Mādhava's; subalena sārdham — with Subala; anyaiḥ durūhā — unreadable by the others; saṁjñā-mayī — made of signs; kā api vārtā — some conversation; babhūva — took place.
And only now does the sentence say what it has been describing: a conversation. Not a whispered one — a conversation made of nothing but signs, right in front of everybody. kā api, "some talk": the poet refuses to tell us what passed. That refusal is the flavour of the verse. In a group of expert sign-readers, two friends had a whole exchange nobody else could follow.
Read the verse's own architecture: the crowd and its expertise first, the concession api second, the exclusion of everyone third, and the subject vārtā held back to the last word. The syntax itself keeps the secret until the end.

Jīva's whole comment is one dictionary line. saṁjñā has three listed senses: awareness, a name, and signalling meaning with the hands. He does not spell out which one applies — he does not have to. Two of the three make no sense of a vārtā, so the third is left standing: a conversation conducted by hand.
Why cited: cited from the Amara-kośa to fix the sense of saṁjñā in saṁjñā-mayī vārtā — that it is meaning conveyed by hand-signs, not "consciousness" or "a name".

subalena sahatogether with Subala saha for the verse's sārdham, the ordinary word for the poetic oneसुबल के साथ — श्लोक के काव्यमय 'सार्धम्' के बदले साधारण बोलचाल का 'सह'

akhila-iṅgiteṣu viśāradāyām vayasya-goṣṭhyām madhye — in the midst of the friend-circle expert in all gestures; anyaiḥ durūhā — unreadable by the others; śrī-kṛṣṇasya subalena saha — Kṛṣṇa's, with Subala; kā api saṁjñā-mayī vārtā babhūva — some sign-made conversation took place.
Viśvanātha does the anvaya for us. He rearranges the verse into prose and changes only three things: Mādhava becomes Śrī Kṛṣṇa, sārdham becomes the everyday saha, and he adds madhye — "in the middle of". That last one is worth pausing on. It rules out the easy reading that they stepped aside. The sign-talk happened in the middle of the group, under the eyes of the very experts who could not read it.
Notice what he does not do: he leaves kā api untouched. The verse refuses to say what was discussed, and the commentator refuses to fill it in.

Having construed the verse, Viśvanātha closes with the same lexicon line Jīva gives. The sense wanted is the third: meaning passed by the hands. So saṁjñā-mayī vārtā is a conversation held in hand-signs.
