priya-narma-vayasyeṣu prabalau subal ||
priya-narma-vayasyeṣuamong the priya-narma friends — the intimate ones who share Kṛṣṇa's private jokes and confidences locative of the group within which a selection is made: "among these". narman = playful, private talk; vayasya = an age-mate, a friend of one's own yearsप्रिय-नर्म-वयस्यों में से — नर्म अर्थात् गूढ़ हास-परिहास की बात, वयस्य अर्थात् समान अवस्था वाला सखा; सप्तमी बता रही है कि इसी समूह के भीतर से चुनाव किया जा रहा है
prabalautwo of them stand out as the strongest nominative dual — the number tells you two names are coming, not oneदो प्रबल (सबसे प्रमुख) हैं — प्रथमा द्विवचन; द्विवचन ही कह देता है कि आगे एक नहीं, दो नाम आने वाले हैं
subalSubala — the first of the two the line breaks off here mid-word; the text as transmitted in this unit gives only "subal", so only the first of the two names is legibleसुबल… — पंक्ति यहीं बीच शब्द में टूट जाती है; इस इकाई में जो पाठ मिला है वह केवल 'सुबल' देता है, इसलिए दोनों में से पहला ही नाम पढ़ा जा सकता है
priya-narma-vayasyeṣu — among the priya-narma friends; prabalau — two are foremost; subal[a] — Subala [and the second name].
priya-narma-vayasyeṣu — प्रिय-नर्म-वयस्यों में से; prabalau — दो प्रबल (प्रमुख) हैं; subal — सुबल… (पाठ यहीं टूट जाता है)
Among the priya-narma friends — the innermost circle, the ones Kṛṣṇa jokes and confides with — two stand out above the rest. The first is Subala. The line as we have it here breaks off mid-word, so only his name survives, and the verses that follow describe him.
प्रिय-नर्म-वयस्यों में दो सबसे प्रबल हैं। द्विवचन से दो नामों की आशा बँधती है। परन्तु पंक्ति 'सुबल' पर ही टूट जाती है, इसलिए यहाँ पहला ही नाम पढ़ा जा सकता है।
priya-narma-vayasya is the fourth and highest grade of Kṛṣṇa's friends in this laharī, above sakhā, suhṛt and priya-sakhā. They are the ones admitted to his most private affairs.
इस लहरी में कृष्ण के सखाओं की चार श्रेणियाँ हैं — सखा, सुहृद्, प्रिय-सखा और प्रिय-नर्म-वयस्य। प्रिय-नर्म-वयस्य चौथी और सबसे ऊँची श्रेणी है; इन्हीं को कृष्ण के अत्यन्त गोपनीय व्यवहारों में प्रवेश मिलता है।

tanu-ruci-vijita-hiraṇyaṁ
tanu-ruci-vijita-hiraṇyaṁthe glow of his body has beaten gold at its own game accusative, describing Subala, who is named in line 4. tanu-ruci = the shine of the body; vijita = defeated, outdone; hiraṇya = gold — so the compound says gold loses the comparisonजिसके शरीर की कान्ति ने सोने को जीत लिया है, ऐसे (सुबल) को — तनु-रुचि = देह की छटा, विजित = हरा दिया गया, हिरण्य = सोना; द्वितीया, क्योंकि यह चौथी पंक्ति में नामतः आने वाले सुबल का विशेषण है
tanu-ruci-vijita-hiraṇyaṁ — [him] by whose bodily glow gold is outshone.
tanu-ruci-vijita-hiraṇyaṁ — जिसके अंगों की कान्ति ने सोने को भी मात दे दिया, ऐसे (सुबल) को
Now the description begins. Subala's complexion shines so that gold is beaten by it. The whole line is one long adjective; the word it describes, "Subala", does not arrive until the fourth line.
सुबल के शरीर की चमक ऐसी है कि उसके सामने सोना हार जाता है। यह विशेषण द्वितीया में है और सुबल का ही वर्णन कर रहा है, जिसका नाम चौथी पंक्ति में आता है।

hari-dayitaṁ hāriṇaṁ harid-vasanam |
hari-dayitaṁhe is dear to Hari — Kṛṣṇa holds him close accusative again, still describing Subala; dayita = loved, held dearहरि को जो प्यारा है, ऐसे (सुबल) को — दयित अर्थात् प्रिय, चाहा हुआ; यह भी द्वितीया, सुबल का ही विशेषण
hāriṇaṁhe wears a necklace — and the word also says "he steals the heart" hārin from hāra, "necklace"; but hārin from √hṛ also means "captivating, carrying the mind away". Viśvanātha takes the necklace sense — see his glossहार (माला) धारण किए हुए को — 'हारिन्' शब्द 'हार' से बना; किन्तु √हृ से बने 'हारिन्' का अर्थ 'मन हर लेने वाला' भी होता है। विश्वनाथ हार वाला अर्थ लेते हैं — उनकी टीका आगे देखिए
harid-vasanamand his garment is green harit = green; vasana = cloth. The three words hari-, hāri-, harid- chime deliberately — one sound carried across three different meaningsहरे वस्त्र वाले को — हरित् = हरा, वसन = वस्त्र। 'हरि', 'हारि' और 'हरिद्' — एक ही ध्वनि तीन भिन्न अर्थों में जान-बूझकर गूँजाई गई है
hari-dayitaṁ — dear to Hari; hāriṇaṁ — wearing a necklace / heart-stealing; harid-vasanam — dressed in green.
hari-dayitaṁ — हरि के प्रिय को; hāriṇaṁ — हार पहने हुए को; harid-vasanam — हरे वस्त्र वाले को
Three things in one breath: he is Hari's beloved, he wears a necklace, and his cloth is green. Read the line aloud and you hear why Rūpa chose these words — hari, hāri, harid, the same sound three times over with a different meaning each time. And the middle word does double duty: a necklace-wearer, and one who carries your heart away.
सुबल कृष्ण को प्रिय है, गले में हार धारण किए है और हरा वस्त्र पहने है। तीनों विशेषण द्वितीया में हैं, तीनों सुबल के हैं। 'हरि', 'हारि', 'हरिद्' — यह ध्वनि की सङ्गति कवि ने जान-बूझकर रखी है।

subalaṁ kuvalaya-nayanaṁ
subalaṁSubala — this at last is the name all the descriptions have been waiting for accusative, the object of vande in the next line; every adjective from line 2 onward agrees with itसुबल को — द्वितीया; अगली पंक्ति के 'वन्दे' का कर्म। दूसरी पंक्ति से लेकर आगे तक के सारे विशेषण इसी के साथ अन्वित होते हैं
kuvalaya-nayanaṁhis eyes are blue lotuses kuvalaya = the blue water-lily; nayana = eye. A bahuvrīhi: "the one whose eyes are…"जिसके नेत्र नीलकमल जैसे हैं, ऐसे को — कुवलय = नीलकमल, नयन = नेत्र; बहुव्रीहि
subalaṁ — Subala; kuvalaya-nayanaṁ — whose eyes are blue lotuses.
subalaṁ — सुबल को; kuvalaya-nayanaṁ — नीलकमल-जैसे नेत्रों वाले को
Here is the name: Subala. And one more feature — eyes like blue lotuses.
अब जाकर नाम आता है — सुबल को। उसके नेत्र नीलकमल के समान हैं। ऊपर के सब विशेषण इसी नाम पर आकर जुड़ते हैं।

naya-nandita-bāndhavaṁ vande ||
naya-nandita-bāndhavaṁby his clever handling of things he keeps his kinsman delighted naya = tact, good management, knowing how to arrange matters; nandita = made glad; bāndhava = kinsman, close relation. Viśvanātha reads the kinsman as Kṛṣṇa himself. Note the chime with nayana in the line before — nayana, then nayaजिसने अपनी नीति-कुशलता से अपने बान्धव को आनन्दित किया, ऐसे को — नय = नीति, काम को ठीक ढंग से सँभालने की सूझ; नन्दित = प्रसन्न किया गया; बान्धव = स्वजन, आत्मीय। विश्वनाथ बान्धव से कृष्ण को ही लेते हैं। पिछली पंक्ति के 'नयन' और यहाँ के 'नय' की ध्वनि-सङ्गति देखिए
vandeI bow to him first person present — the whole verse has been building to this one finite verbमैं वन्दना करता हूँ — उत्तम पुरुष वर्तमान; सारा श्लोक इसी एक तिङन्त क्रिया तक पहुँचने के लिए चलता रहा
naya-nandita-bāndhavaṁ — him by whose tact his kinsman is gladdened; subalaṁ vande — Subala, I bow to him.
naya-nandita-bāndhavaṁ — जिसने अपनी नीति से बान्धव को आनन्दित किया, उस (सुबल) को; vande — मैं वन्दना करता हूँ
He gladdens his kinsman by his skill in arranging things. To that Subala I bow. Notice the sound again: the eyes were nayana, and now comes naya, his good sense — the same syllables turned to a new meaning, just as hari, hāri and harid were in line three.
सुबल अपनी सूझ-बूझ से अपने आत्मीय को आनन्दित करता है। विश्वनाथ के अनुसार वह आत्मीय कृष्ण ही हैं। इतने विशेषणों के बाद अन्त में एक ही क्रिया आती है — मैं उसकी वन्दना करता हूँ।

hāriṇaṁ hāra-viśiṣṭam |
hāriṇaṁthe word hāriṇam in the verse he repeats the verse's own word before glossing it — the standard commentary move'हारिणम्' — टीकाकार पहले श्लोक का अपना ही शब्द दोहराते हैं, फिर उसकी व्याख्या करते हैं; यह टीका की सामान्य पद्धति है
hāra-viśiṣṭammeans: marked out by a necklace, that is, wearing one viśiṣṭa = "distinguished by, having"; so hārin is taken from hāra, "necklace", not from √hṛ, "to carry off"अर्थात् हार से युक्त — विशिष्ट का अर्थ 'जिसमें वह वस्तु विशेष रूप से हो'; इस प्रकार 'हारिन्' को 'हार' से लिया गया, √हृ (हर ले जाना) से नहीं
hāriṇaṁ — [the word] hāriṇam; hāra-viśiṣṭam — [means] one who has a necklace.
hāriṇaṁ — 'हारिणम्' का अर्थ; hāra-viśiṣṭam — हार से युक्त
Viśvanātha settles the ambiguous word. hāriṇam, he says, means "wearing a necklace" — from hāra, the necklace. He does not take it as "charming". So on his reading the line is describing Subala's ornament, alongside his green cloth.
विश्वनाथ 'हारिणम्' शब्द उठाकर उसका अर्थ करते हैं — हार से युक्त। अर्थात् वे इसे 'हार' शब्द से लेते हैं, 'हरण करने वाला' अर्थ से नहीं।

nayena nītyā ānanditaḥ śrī-kṛṣṇo yena ||
nayenaby naya — that is, instrumental of means, picking the word out of the verse's compound naya-nandita-bāndhavamनय के द्वारा — तृतीया, करण में; श्लोक के समास 'नय-नन्दित-बान्धवम्' में से यही पद निकालकर टीकाकार खोल रहे हैं
nītyāby good judgment, by knowing how to manage a situation instrumental too, standing in apposition to nayena — nīti is the plainer synonym he supplies for nayaअर्थात् नीति के द्वारा — यह भी तृतीया, 'नयेन' के ही समानाधिकरण में; 'नय' के लिए यह सरल पर्याय दिया गया है
ānanditaḥwas made glad past passive participle — the delighting is done to him, not by himआनन्दित किए गए — कर्मवाच्य भूत कृदन्त; आनन्द उन्हें मिला, आनन्दित करने वाले वे स्वयं नहीं
śrī-kṛṣṇaḥand the one made glad is Śrī Kṛṣṇa — he is the "kinsman" the verse meant nominative, the subject of the participle; this is the identification the commentary is really supplyingश्रीकृष्ण — प्रथमा, कृदन्त का आश्रय; टीका वस्तुतः यही पहचान बता रही है कि 'बान्धव' कौन है
yenaby whom — that is, by Subala; so the compound means "the one by whom…" instrumental relative, the mark of a bahuvrīhi: Viśvanātha is spelling out that the compound describes Subala, not the kinsmanजिसके द्वारा — तृतीया का सम्बन्धवाचक, बहुव्रीहि का चिह्न; इससे विश्वनाथ स्पष्ट कर देते हैं कि यह समास सुबल का विशेषण है, बान्धव का नहीं
yena — by whom [Subala]; nayena nītyā — by naya, that is by good judgment; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ — Śrī Kṛṣṇa; ānanditaḥ — was made glad.
nayena — नय से; nītyā — अर्थात् नीति से; ānanditaḥ — आनन्दित किए गए; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ — श्रीकृष्ण; yena — जिसके द्वारा (वह सुबल)
Now the compound naya-nandita-bāndhavam. Viśvanātha unpacks it as a bahuvrīhi: Subala is the one by whose good judgment his kinsman was delighted. And he names the kinsman — it is Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He also gives naya a plainer word, nīti: knowing how to handle a situation. That is Subala's gift, and it is what pleases Kṛṣṇa.
विश्वनाथ 'नय' को खोलकर 'नीति' कहते हैं। फिर बताते हैं कि आनन्दित होने वाले श्रीकृष्ण हैं। और 'येन' लगाकर स्पष्ट करते हैं कि यह पूरा समास सुबल का विशेषण है — जिसके द्वारा श्रीकृष्ण आनन्दित किए गए, वह सुबल।
