śrīdāmnaḥ pṛthulāṁ bhujām abhi śiro vinyasya viśrāmiṇaṁ
śrīdāmnaḥbelonging to Śrīdāmā genitive, running with bhujām — the arm is Śrīdāmā's, and Śrīdāmā is the first of the two friends the picture namesश्रीदामा की — यह भुजा जिसकी है; चित्र में जिन दो सखाओं के नाम आते हैं, उनमें पहला यही श्रीदामा है
pṛthulāṁ bhujām abhionto his broad, thick arm abhi here is a karmapravacanīya governing the accusative bhujām — 'onto, up against' — which is why bhujām is accusative and not locativeउस मोटी-चौड़ी भुजा पर, उसके सहारे — यहाँ 'अभि' कर्मप्रवचनीय है और द्वितीया को खींचता है, इसीलिए 'भुजाम्' द्वितीया में है, सप्तमी में नहीं
śiro vinyasyahaving laid his head downसिर टिकाकर, रखकर — पहले यह क्रिया हुई, तभी आगे की स्थिति बनती है
viśrāmiṇamhim as he takes his rest accusative — it describes Kṛṣṇa, who only surfaces by name in the last line as vrajendrātmajam; every description in the verse hangs on that one accusativeविश्राम करते हुए उन (कृष्ण) को — द्वितीया; नाम तो अन्तिम पंक्ति में 'व्रजेन्द्रात्मजम्' कहकर ही खुलता है, और श्लोक के सारे वर्णन इसी एक द्वितीया पर टँगे हैं
śrīdāmnaḥ pṛthulāṁ bhujām abhi — onto Śrīdāmā's broad arm; śiro vinyasya — having laid his head; viśrāmiṇam — him, at rest.
śrīdāmnaḥ — श्रीदामा की; pṛthulāṁ bhujām abhi — मोटी भुजा पर; śiro vinyasya — सिर रखकर; viśrāmiṇam — विश्राम करते हुए (कृष्ण) को
The verse opens with Kṛṣṇa lying down. His head is laid on Śrīdāmā's broad arm, and he is taking his rest — the friend's arm is his pillow. Nothing here is said of Kṛṣṇa's name yet. Everything is a description of the one who will be named only at the end.
श्रीदामा की मोटी-चौड़ी भुजा पर सिर टिकाकर कृष्ण विश्राम कर रहे हैं। श्लोक भर में उनका नाम अभी नहीं आया; वे केवल 'विश्रामिणम्' इस द्वितीया से पकड़े जाते हैं।
The lead-in reads 'asya sakhyaṁ, yathā' — 'his friendship, as follows'. The verse illustrates the sakhya of Devaprastha, who was called best of all the sakhās at 3.3.33 and listed in the sakhā class at 3.3.30-31. Viśvanātha reads the opening words the other way round: he takes adhi śiraḥ as śirasi, 'at the head', making the arm the thing laid there rather than the head — the same picture seen from the other side.

ruddha-hṛdayamhim whose chest is held fast bahuvrīhi describing Kṛṣṇa; Jīva glosses hṛdaya as nija-vakṣaḥ — the body's chest, not the inner heartजिनका वक्षःस्थल घेर लिया गया है, ऐसे उन (कृष्ण) को — बहुव्रीहि; जीव 'हृदय' का अर्थ 'निज-वक्षः' करते हैं, अर्थात् देह का सीना, भीतर का मन नहीं
śayyā-virājat-tanumhim whose body shines as it lies on the bedजिनका शरीर शय्या पर शोभा पा रहा है, ऐसे उन (कृष्ण) को
dāmnaḥ savya-kareṇa — by Dāmā's left hand; ruddha-hṛdayam — his chest held fast; śayyā-virājat-tanum — his body shining on the bed.
dāmnaḥ savya-kareṇa — दामा के बाएँ हाथ से; ruddha-hṛdayam — घिरे हुए वक्षवाले (कृष्ण) को; śayyā-virājat-tanum — शय्या पर शोभित शरीरवाले को
Second friend, second touch. Dāmā's left hand lies across Kṛṣṇa's chest and holds it. And his whole body shines, stretched out on the bed. So the picture so far: head on one friend's arm, chest under another friend's hand.
दामा ने अपने बाएँ हाथ से कृष्ण का सीना घेर रखा है। और कृष्ण का शरीर शय्या पर शोभा पा रहा है। ये दोनों वर्णन भी उसी 'विश्रामिणम्' वाली द्वितीया के साथ चलते हैं।
Both names in the picture are built on dāman, 'cord, rope' — Śrī-dāmā and Dāmā — and it is Dāmā's hand that holds, ruddha, Kṛṣṇa's chest. The name and the act echo each other.
चित्र में आए दोनों नाम 'दामन्' यानी रस्सी, डोरी से बने हैं — श्रीदामा और दामा — और घेरनेवाला, 'रुद्ध' करनेवाला हाथ दामा का ही है। नाम और क्रिया एक-दूसरे की प्रतिध्वनि करते हैं।

kandarasyaof the mountain cave genitive held by madhye; Viśvanātha names the cave as one on Govardhanaगुफा के — षष्ठी, जिसे 'मध्ये' पकड़े हुए है; विश्वनाथ इस गुफा को गोवर्धन की गुफा बताते हैं

sundari — O beautiful one; kandarasya madhye — in the middle of the mountain cave; padayoḥ saṁvāhanena — by massaging his two feet; priyam — the dear one.
madhye — बीच में; sundari — हे सुन्दरि; kandarasya — गुफा के; padayoḥ saṁvāhanena — चरण दबाने से; priyam — प्रिय (कृष्ण) को
The speaker turns to her friend: look, beautiful one. The place is inside a mountain cave. The service is a foot-massage. And the one served is priya, the dear one. Viśvanātha does not take priya passively as 'the loved one' but actively: he is the one who makes love happen in everybody around him.
हे सुन्दरि! यह सब गुफा के भीतर हो रहा है। वहीं कृष्ण के दोनों चरण दबाए जा रहे हैं। और वे प्रिय हैं — विश्वनाथ के अनुसार वे ही दूसरों में प्रेम उपजाते हैं।
saṁvāhana, foot-pressing, is the same service the young friends were being urged to at 3.3.32 — 'bhaja aṅga-saṁvāhanam', 'take up massaging his limbs'. It is the standard sakhya service in this laharī.
'संवाहन' यानी चरण दबाना वही सेवा है जिसके लिए ३.३.३२ में तरुण सखाओं को प्रेरित किया गया था — 'भज अङ्ग-संवाहनम्', 'इनके अंग दबाने में लग जा'। इस लहरी में सख्य की यही प्रसिद्ध सेवा है।

This is the nominative subject of the whole verse, and the only nominative in itदेवप्रस्थ — छपा हुआ रूप 'देवप्रस्थ इतः' है, सन्धि-विच्छेद 'देवप्रस्थः' + 'इतः'; यही पूरे श्लोक का कर्ता है और श्लोक में प्रथमा का यही एक पद है
itaḥfrom this — from what he is doing right here the adverb can be taken spatially ('here, on this side', pointing into the scene) or causally ('from this'); Viśvanātha's paraphrase 'from that cause' takes it causally, tying it to the foot-massageयहाँ से, इस ओर से — अथवा इस कारण से; यह अव्यय स्थान के अर्थ में भी लिया जा सकता है, दृश्य की ओर उँगली उठाते हुए, और कारण के अर्थ में भी। विश्वनाथ 'उस कारण से' कहकर इसे कारण-अर्थ में, चरण दबाने से जोड़ते हैं
kṛtīhe is a fortunate man — one who has done the one thing worth doingकृतार्थ, धन्य — जिसका जीवन सफल हो गया
sukhayatihe makes him happyसुखी करता है — यही श्लोक की मुख्य क्रिया है
premṇāout of love instrumental — prema is what the service is made of, not merely the mood behind itप्रेम के द्वारा — तृतीया; प्रेम केवल पीछे खड़ा भाव नहीं, सेवा उसी से बनी हुई है
vrajendrātmajamthe son of the king of Vrajaव्रजराज के पुत्र को — यहीं आकर वह द्वितीया नाम पाती है जिस पर सारे वर्णन टँगे थे
kṛtī devaprasthaḥ — the fortunate Devaprastha; itaḥ — from this; premṇā — with love; vrajendrātmajam — the son of Vraja's king; sukhayati — makes happy.
devaprasthaḥ — देवप्रस्थ; itaḥ — यहाँ से / इस कारण; kṛtī — कृतार्थ; sukhayati — सुखी करता है; premṇā — प्रेम से; vrajendrātmajam — व्रजराजनन्दन को
Now the sentence lands. Devaprastha is the one acting, and he is called kṛtī — a fortunate man, someone who has done the thing worth doing. What he does is simple: he makes the son of Vraja's king happy. And he does it premṇā, with love. That is the whole point of the illustration. Not a servant's duty, but a friend's love — this is Devaprastha's sakhya.
कृतार्थ देवप्रस्थ प्रेम से व्रजराजनन्दन को सुखी करता है। 'इतः' को यहाँ दो तरह लिया जा सकता है — 'इस ओर से', यानी दृश्य के भीतर से, या 'इस कारण से'। अब जाकर वह नाम खुलता है जिसका वर्णन तीन पंक्तियों से चल रहा था।

yena tamhe of whom that is true — him: so the whole compound is a description of Kṛṣṇa the bahuvrīhi resolution; printed yena, where a compound of this shape usually resolves with yasya, 'whose'. Jīva opens the compound ruddha-hṛdaya. Two things get fixed. First, why the hand is lying there at all: sneha, affection, and Dāmā cannot help it. Second, what hṛdaya means here: not the heart within, but the chest — Kṛṣṇa's own chest, which Dāmā's left hand lies across and holds. And with yena … tam Jīva shows that the whole compound is one long adjective for Kṛṣṇa, the one Devaprastha is delighting.

samastāsamastena nityāpeṣeṇa saṅgatiḥ iti nyayena rudha-hṛdayayoḥ samāse kṛte savya-kareṇety asya sambandhaḥ ||
samastāsamastena nityāpeṣeṇa saṅgatiḥa word inside a compound does join with a word outside it, when the two necessarily require each other quoted from the Hari-nāmāmṛta-vyākaraṇa 6.104; printed nityāpeṣeṇa, standardly nityāpekṣeṇa — 'requiring each other as a matter of course'समास में गए पद का समास से बाहर के पद के साथ सम्बन्ध तब बनता है, जब दोनों नित्य एक-दूसरे की अपेक्षा रखते हों — यह वचन हरिनामामृतव्याकरण ६.१०४ से लिया गया है; छपा हुआ रूप 'नित्यापेषेण' है, जो प्रायः 'नित्यापेक्षेण' पढ़ा जाता है
iti nyāyenaby this rule instrumental — the rule is the warrant, not just an ornamentइस न्याय के द्वारा — तृतीया; यह नियम यहाँ शोभा के लिए नहीं, प्रमाण के रूप में लाया गया है
rudha-hṛdayayoḥ samāse kṛteonce ruddha and hṛdaya have been made into one compound locative absolute — 'once … has been done'; the compounding is what creates the problem. Printed rudha- for ruddha-जब 'रुद्ध' और 'हृदय' का समास कर दिया गया — सति-सप्तमी; समास बन जाने से ही यह अड़चन खड़ी होती है। छपा हुआ रूप 'रुध-' है, 'रुद्ध-' के स्थान पर
savya-kareṇety asya sambandhaḥthe word savya-kareṇa still connects with itतब भी 'सव्य-करेण' इस पद का उससे सम्बन्ध बन जाता है
rudha-hṛdayayoḥ samāse kṛte — once ruddha and hṛdaya have been compounded; samastāsamastena nityāpeṣeṇa saṅgatiḥ iti nyāyena — by the rule that a compounded word joins with an uncompounded one they mutually require; savya-kareṇety asya sambandhaḥ — this word savya-kareṇa is what it connects with.
samastāsamastena nityāpeṣeṇa saṅgatiḥ — समस्त का असमस्त के साथ नित्य अपेक्षा से सम्बन्ध; iti nyāyena — इस न्याय से; rudha-hṛdayayoḥ samāse kṛte — रुद्ध और हृदय का समास हो जाने पर; savya-kareṇety asya sambandhaḥ — 'सव्य-करेण' का सम्बन्ध
Now a grammar knot. Once ruddha and hṛdaya are locked into one compound, the usual principle is that nothing outside the compound may be construed with a piece inside it. But the verse needs savya-kareṇa, 'by the left hand', to go precisely with ruddha, 'held'. Jīva answers with a rule from the Hari-nāmāmṛta-vyākaraṇa: where the compounded word and the uncompounded one necessarily call for each other, they do connect. 'Held' by itself begs the question 'held by what?' — so the left hand attaches, and the sentence stands.
समास हो जाने पर भी बाहर का पद भीतर के पद से जुड़ सकता है, बशर्ते दोनों नित्य एक-दूसरे की अपेक्षा रखते हों। इसी न्याय से जीव कहते हैं कि 'रुद्ध-हृदय' समास बन जाने पर भी 'सव्य-करेण' का सम्बन्ध 'रुद्ध' से बना रहता है।
Why cited: cited as the grammatical warrant for construing savya-kareṇa, a word outside the compound, with ruddha inside the compound ruddha-hṛdaya — without it the instrumental in the verse would have nothing to attach to.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह वचन व्याकरण के प्रमाण के रूप में लाया गया है, ताकि समास से बाहर खड़े 'सव्य-करेण' का समास के भीतर के 'रुद्ध' से अन्वय सिद्ध हो सके; इसके बिना श्लोक की वह तृतीया किसी से जुड़ ही नहीं पाती।

Viśvanātha runs the whole verse through in one breath. He starts by re-arranging the opening: adhi śiraḥ means śirasi, 'at the head' — so the head is the place and the arm is what is laid there. pṛthulā he softens to puṣṭā, thick and well-built. Then he supplies the occasion the verse leaves out: this is rest after a wrestling bout. The hand on the chest he explains as Jīva does — affection, and hṛdaya means the chest. He names the cave: one on Govardhana. He reads priya actively — the one who makes people love him — and identifies him as Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Last, he pins down the verse's itaḥ: from that cause and nothing else, the foot-massage itself. The service is the cause, and love is the means.
Two details Viśvanātha supplies that the verse itself does not: that the rest follows a wrestling match, and that the cave is on Govardhana. Note also that he and Jīva agree word for word on the hard part — sneha-vaśāt, and hṛdaya as the chest — but Viśvanātha does not repeat Jīva's grammatical defence of savya-kareṇa; he simply construes it that way.
