jani-tithir iti putra-prema-saṁvītayāhaṁ
jani-tithiḥ"it is the birth-tithi" — the lunar day of his birthजन्म की तिथि है — माता का कहा हुआ एक ही कारण-वाक्य
itiso she said — this closes off her words and gives her reason for holding him iti quoting the mother's one-line reason; everything after it is the speaker's own reportऐसा कहकर — यहीं माता के शब्द समाप्त होते हैं; आगे का सब बोलनेवाले का अपना कथन है
putra-prema-saṁvītayāby her, wrapped up in love for her son instrumental, agreeing with ambayā in the next line — she is the agent who does the holding, and the compound gives the motive: prema for her putra has her completely coveredक्योंकि वह अपने पुत्र के प्रेम से चारों ओर से घिरी हुई है — उसी के द्वारा
ahamI — the speaker, kept back at homeमैं
jani-tithiḥ iti — "it is the birth-tithi", she said; putra-prema-saṁvītayā — by her who is wrapped in love for her son; aham — I …
jani-tithiḥ — जन्म की तिथि है; iti — ऐसा कहकर; putra-prema-saṁvītayā — पुत्र-प्रेम से पूर्णतया घिरी हुई (माता) के द्वारा; aham — मैं
The speaker is reporting what has happened to him this morning. His mother said just one thing: "it is your birth-tithi." That was enough. She is wrapped up in love for her son, and the verse says so before it says what she did — the love is the reason for everything that follows.
'आज जन्म की तिथि है' — बस इतना ही माता ने कहा। और वह माता पुत्र के प्रेम से चारों ओर से लिपटी हुई है। उसी के द्वारा मैं…
The lead-in is asya sakhyaṁ, yathā — "his friendship, as follows" — so this verse is the udāharaṇa illustrating the sakhya of the friend just named. Viśvanātha identifies the speaker as Baladeva and the listener as Subala.
इससे पहले की पंक्ति है 'अस्य सख्यं, यथा' — 'इसका सख्य, जैसे कि' — इसलिए यह श्लोक अभी-अभी नामित सखा के सख्य का उदाहरण है। विश्वनाथ बोलनेवाले को बलदेव और सुननेवाले को सुबल बताते हैं।

snapayitum iha sadmany ambayā stambhito’smi |
snapayitumin order to give me a bath infinitive of purpose from the causative snapayati — she is the one doing the bathing, he is the one bathedस्नान कराने के लिए — कराने का काम माता का, नहाना मेरा
iha sadmaniright here in the houseयहाँ इसी घर में
ambayāby mother instrumental agent of the passive stambhitaḥ; putra-prema-saṁvītayā in the line above describes herमाता के द्वारा — ऊपर की पंक्ति का 'पुत्र-प्रेम से घिरी हुई' विशेषण इसी का है
stambhitaḥ asmiI have been pinned down, held fast where I amमैं रोक दिया गया हूँ
ambayā — by mother; putra-prema-saṁvītayā — wrapped in love for her son; snapayitum — in order to bathe me; iha sadmani — here in the house; aham stambhitaḥ asmi — I have been held fast.
snapayitum — स्नान कराने के लिए; iha sadmani — यहाँ घर में ही; ambayā — माता के द्वारा; stambhitaḥ asmi — मैं रोक दिया गया हूँ
Here is what she did. To bathe him for the birth-tithi she has kept him at home. The word is stambhitaḥ — not "asked" but "pinned in place", the way you stop something that was about to move. He was on his way out to the forest; her love stopped him at the door.
स्नान कराने के लिए माता ने मुझे यहीं घर में रोक रखा है। निकल नहीं पाया।
tithi is the lunar day of the Indian calendar. A birth-tithi is not the birthday date but the recurring lunar day of one's birth, marked with a bath and small honours.
तिथि भारतीय पंचांग का चान्द्र दिन है। जन्म-तिथि का अर्थ अंग्रेजी तारीख नहीं, बल्कि जन्म का वही चान्द्र दिन है, जो लौट-लौटकर आता है और स्नान तथा छोटे-मोटे सत्कार से मनाया जाता है।

iti subala girā me sandiśa tvaṁ mukundaṁ
itithat is the message — everything said so far is what is to be passed onयह जो अभी कहा — यही सन्देश
subalaSubala — he turns and calls his friend vocativeहे सुबल — सम्बोधन
girā mein my words, as coming from meमेरी वाणी से, मेरी ओर से कहकर
sandiśa tvamyou — go and give the wordतुम कहला भेजो — तुम ही जाकर यह सन्देश दे दो
mukundamto Mukundaमुकुन्द को
iti — this being so; subala — O Subala; tvam — you; me girā — in my words; mukundam — to Mukunda; sandiśa — carry the message.
iti — यह (सन्देश); subala — हे सुबल; girā me — मेरी वाणी से; sandiśa tvam — तुम कहला भेजो; mukundam — मुकुन्द को
Now the request. Subala is to go to Kṛṣṇa and speak in Baladeva's own voice — me girā, "with my word". That matters: it is not advice passed along, it is the elder brother's word arriving through a friend's mouth.
हे सुबल! यही बात मेरी ओर से मुकुन्द तक पहुँचा दो।
sandiś- is "to send word, to instruct through a messenger" — the verb already carries the errand, so no separate word for "messenger" is needed.
'सन्दिश्' धातु का अर्थ ही है — किसी के हाथ कहला भेजना, सन्देश भेजकर आदेश देना। पूरा दौत्य-कार्य क्रिया में ही समा गया है, इसलिए 'दूत' के लिए अलग शब्द रखने की आवश्यकता नहीं पड़ी।

phaṇi-pati-hrada-kacche nādya gaccheḥ kadāpi ||
phaṇi-pati-hrada-kaccheto the bank of the lake of the lord of snakes locative of the goal with gaccheḥ; phaṇi-pati, "lord of the hooded ones", is the snake in the lake — Viśvanātha names him Kāliyaफणधरों के स्वामी वाले कुण्ड के तट पर — जाने के लक्ष्य-स्थान में; विश्वनाथ उस सर्प का नाम कालिय बताते हैं
na adyanot todayआज तो नहीं
gaccheḥyou must not go optative second person — the message is now in Kṛṣṇa's own ear, addressed straight to himतुम जाना — अब बात सीधे कृष्ण के कान में, उन्हीं को सम्बोधित करके
kadā apinot at any point, on no accountकभी भी
adya — today; phaṇi-pati-hrada-kacche — to the bank of the snake-lord's lake; kadā api — on any account; na gaccheḥ — do not go.
phaṇi-pati-hrada-kacche — फणिपति के कुण्ड के तट पर; na adya — आज नहीं; gaccheḥ — तुम जाना; kadā api — कभी भी
And here is the content of the message, one sentence long: do not go today to the bank of the snake-lord's lake, not for any reason. Notice how the verse hands the words over — from L3 onward Baladeva is no longer speaking to Subala but through him, straight at Kṛṣṇa. That is the sakhya on display: the friend is trusted to carry the elder brother's protective word, and the whole worry of the verse is for Kṛṣṇa's safety, not for the missed outing.
फणिपति के उस कुण्ड के किनारे आज कभी मत जाना।

jani-tithir iti māsikīyaṁ janmarkṣur yuktā tithiḥ, na tu vārṣikī |
jani-tithiḥ itias for the words "jani-tithiḥ" in the verse'जनि-तिथिः' — श्लोक के इस पद का अर्थ यह है
māsikīyamit means the monthly oneमासिक, हर महीने आनेवाली
janmarkṣur yuktā tithiḥthe tithi that falls together with the birth-star printed janmarkṣur yuktā; Viśvanātha writes the same phrase as the compound janmarkṣa-yuktā, "joined with the janma-nakṣatra"जन्म-नक्षत्र से युक्त तिथि — छपा हुआ रूप 'जन्मर्क्षुर् युक्ता' है; विश्वनाथ इसी को समास बनाकर 'जन्मर्क्ष-युक्ता' लिखते हैं
na tu vārṣikībut not the yearly one tu marks the exclusion — the whole point of the sentence is what jani-tithi does NOT mean hereपरन्तु वार्षिक नहीं — 'तु' से यही निकाला जा रहा है कि यहाँ जन्म-तिथि का अर्थ क्या नहीं है
jani-tithiḥ iti — the phrase "birth-tithi"; māsikīyam — is the monthly one; janmarkṣur yuktā tithiḥ — the tithi joined with the birth-star; na tu vārṣikī — not the yearly one.
jani-tithiḥ iti — 'जनि-तिथिः' का अर्थ; māsikīyam — मासिक; janmarkṣur yuktā tithiḥ — जन्म-नक्षत्र से युक्त तिथि; na tu vārṣikī — वार्षिक नहीं
Jīva pins down one word before anything else. "Birth-tithi" here is the monthly observance — the lunar day that comes round each month together with one's birth-star. It is not the annual birthday.
'जनि-तिथिः' का अर्थ है — जन्म-नक्षत्र से युक्त वह मासिक तिथि। वार्षिक तिथि यहाँ अभिप्रेत नहीं है।
Two observances share the name. The māsika one recurs every month when the tithi and the janma-nakṣatra line up, and is marked quietly at home with a bath. The vārṣika one comes once a year and is a full festival.
एक ही नाम से दो व्रत चलते हैं। मासिक व्रत हर महीने तब आता है जब तिथि और जन्म-नक्षत्र का मेल हो जाता है, और वह घर में स्नान आदि से चुपचाप मना लिया जाता है। वार्षिक व्रत वर्ष में एक बार आता है और पूरा उत्सव बन जाता है।

mahā-mahotsavāyāṁ tasyāṁ tasyāṁ svata eva śrī-kṛṣṇasya gamanāsambhavāt |
mahā-mahotsavāyāmwhen that day is one of great festivalजो बड़े भारी महोत्सव वाली होती है, उस तिथि में
tasyāṁ tasyāmon any such yearly day, whenever it comes round the doubling is distributive — not one particular year but each oneउस-उस में — दो बार कहने से एक-एक करके हर बार, कोई एक वर्ष-विशेष नहीं
svataḥ evaof its own accord, without anyone stopping himस्वयं ही, अपने-आप ही
śrī-kṛṣṇasyafor Śrī Kṛṣṇaश्रीकृष्ण का
gamana-asambhavātbecause going out would simply be impossible ablative of reason, continuing the previous sentence — this is why the yearly reading had to be ruled outक्योंकि जाना ही असम्भव है — इसी कारण से पिछली बात कही गई
tasyāṁ tasyām — on any such yearly day; mahā-mahotsavāyām — it being a great festival; śrī-kṛṣṇasya — Śrī Kṛṣṇa's; gamanam — going out; svataḥ eva — all by itself; asambhavāt — because it would be impossible.
mahā-mahotsavāyām — बड़े महोत्सव वाली उस तिथि में; tasyāṁ tasyām — उस-उस में, प्रत्येक बार; svataḥ eva — स्वयं ही; śrī-kṛṣṇasya — श्रीकृष्ण का; gamana-asambhavāt — जाना असम्भव होने के कारण
And here is why it cannot be the yearly one. A yearly birth-tithi means a huge festival. On such a day nobody would need to hold Kṛṣṇa back — the day itself keeps everyone at home. The verse only makes sense if this is the small monthly observance, where one boy can be detained and the other is still free to wander out to the river.
कारण यह है कि वह वार्षिक तिथि तो बड़े महोत्सव की होती है। ऐसी हर तिथि पर श्रीकृष्ण का बाहर जाना अपने-आप ही असम्भव रहता।
The sentence has no finite verb of its own; the ablative -asambhavāt hangs on the previous sentence as its reason, so s1 and s2 are one argument in two breaths.
इस वाक्य में अपनी कोई तिङन्त क्रिया नहीं है; 'गमनासम्भवात्' यह पञ्चमी पिछले वाक्य से जुड़कर उसका हेतु बनती है। इसलिए दोनों वाक्य दो साँसों में कहा गया एक ही तर्क हैं।

na alaṅghayiṣyatawould not have been stepped over conditional passive — contrary to fact: it was stepped over, so the message must not have arrived in timeलाँघी न जाती — यह 'ऐसा होता तो ऐसा न होता' वाला रूप है; लाँघी तो गई, इसलिए सन्देश समय पर पहुँचा ही नहीं
itiand that closes the inferenceइस प्रकार
saḥ ayaṁ ca sandeśaḥ — and this message; vilambamānatayā gatena subalena — by Subala, who went slowly; jhaṭiti — in time; samāsādayituṁ na śeke — could not be delivered; iti gamyate — this is to be understood; anyathā — otherwise; pūrva-pūrvavat — as on all earlier occasions; tadā api — that day as well; tad-ājñā tu — that order of his; tena — by him; na alaṅghayiṣyata — would not have been overstepped.
Now Jīva reads backwards from what we know happened. The message clearly did not reach Kṛṣṇa in time — Subala dawdled on the way. How does Jīva know? Because Kṛṣṇa had never once crossed his elder brother's word before. If the message had arrived, that day would have been no different. So the only thing that can explain Kṛṣṇa going to the snake-lord's lake is a late-arriving messenger.
और यह सन्देश — सुबल देर करते-करते गया, इसलिए वह इसे झट से पहुँचा न सका। इतना समझ में आ जाता है। नहीं तो पहले की ही भाँति उस दिन भी उनकी आज्ञा उनसे कभी न लाँघी जाती।
Jīva does not name the lake's snake; Viśvanātha, glossing the same line, identifies him as Kāliya.
जीव गोस्वामी उस कुण्ड के सर्प का नाम नहीं लेते; विश्वनाथ इसी पंक्ति की व्याख्या में उसे कालिय बताते हैं।

śrī-kṛṣṇasya śikṣā-artham — to warn Śrī Kṛṣṇa; subalaṁ prati — to Subala; baladevaḥ āha — Baladeva says; he putra adya tava janma-tithiḥ iti — "O son, today is your birth-tithi"; prema-yuktayā mama mātrā — by my mother, full of love; snapayitum — to bathe me; gṛhe eva — in the house itself; stambhitaḥ asmi — I have been held fast.
Viśvanātha sets the scene before glossing a single word. The speaker is Baladeva; he is talking to Subala; and the reason he opens his mouth at all is to get a warning to Kṛṣṇa. Then he fills in the mother's line, which the verse gives in three syllables: "O son, today is your birth-tithi." That is the whole of her argument. She is full of love, she wants to bathe him, and so he never got past the house.
श्रीकृष्ण को सीख देने के लिए बलदेव सुबल से कहते हैं — 'हे पुत्र! आज तेरी जन्म-तिथि है' — ऐसा कहकर प्रेम से भरी मेरी माता ने मुझे स्नान कराने के लिए घर में ही रोक लिया है।
Note what Viśvanātha supplies that the verse leaves bare: the speaker's name, the listener's name, the words the mother actually spoke, and the purpose — śikṣā, a warning. The verse itself names none of these.
देखिए, श्लोक जो कुछ अनकहा छोड़ता है, वह सब विश्वनाथ जोड़ देते हैं — कहनेवाले का नाम, सुननेवाले का नाम, माता के मुँह के असली शब्द, और प्रयोजन भी — शिक्षा, अर्थात् चेतावनी। श्लोक इनमें से किसी का नाम नहीं लेता।

ataḥ — इस कारण; mama vana-gamanam — मेरा वन-गमन; nivṛttam — रुक गया
One short sentence, supplying a step the verse never states. Since he is pinned at home, his own trip to the forest is cancelled. That is why he has to send word instead of going himself — and why Kṛṣṇa would be at the lake unaccompanied.
इसलिए मेरा वन जाना आज रह गया।
The verse says only that he is held in the house. "Therefore my forest-trip is off" is Viśvanātha's own connecting link, put into Baladeva's mouth so the message that follows has a reason to exist.
श्लोक में इतना ही है कि वे घर में रोक लिए गए हैं। 'इसलिए मेरा वन जाना रह गया' — यह जोड़नेवाली कड़ी विश्वनाथ की अपनी है, जिसे वे बलदेव के मुँह में रख देते हैं, ताकि आगे के सन्देश का कोई कारण बन सके।

iti hetoḥ — for this reason; mad-girā — in my words; śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ sandiśa — send word to Śrī Kṛṣṇa; he kṛṣṇa — O Kṛṣṇa; kāliya-hradasya kacche nikaṭe — on the bank, that is near, Kāliya's lake; tvam adya kadā api na gaccha — do not go today on any account; na yāhi — do not go.

Viśvanātha now works through the message. iti he takes as "for this reason" — because the trip is off. me girā becomes "in my words". And he identifies the snake: the lake is Kāliya's. One more thing he does: kaccha, "bank", he glosses as nikaṭa, "near it" — so the warning is not only about the water's edge but about going anywhere close. Then he says the prohibition twice over, na gaccha, na yāhi, the way a worried elder brother would.
इस कारण मेरी ओर से श्रीकृष्ण को कहला भेजो — हे कृष्ण! कालिय के कुण्ड के तट पर, उसके आस-पास, तुम आज कभी मत जाना; मत जाओ।
Look at the shape of the sentence: Baladeva starts by instructing Subala and ends up addressing Kṛṣṇa — he kṛṣṇa. Viśvanātha keeps that shift, which is where the sakhya lies: the friend's voice becomes the brother's voice.
वाक्य की चाल देखिए — बलदेव आरम्भ सुबल को आज्ञा देकर करते हैं और अन्त में सीधे कृष्ण को पुकार बैठते हैं — 'हे कृष्ण'। विश्वनाथ इस पलटाव को ज्यों-का-त्यों रहने देते हैं, और सख्य वहीं है — सखा की वाणी भाई की वाणी बन जाती है।

Viśvanātha closes on the same word Jīva opened on: which birth-tithi is meant. The monthly one, the day the tithi meets the birth-star — not the annual one. Why not? Because the annual one is a great festival, and on a festival day even Kṛṣṇa could not have gone out. If neither boy could leave the village, there would be nothing to warn about and no verse.
यहाँ जन्म-तिथि मासिक है — जन्म-नक्षत्र से युक्त तिथि; वार्षिक नहीं। क्योंकि वह तो बड़े महोत्सव की होती है, और उस दिन तो श्रीकृष्ण का भी बाहर जाना अपने-आप असम्भव रहता।
Viśvanātha adds api to the point — "even Kṛṣṇa's" going out — which turns the reason on the messenger's side: on a festival day the warning would have had no addressee.
विश्वनाथ इस हेतु में 'अपि' जोड़ देते हैं — 'श्रीकृष्ण का भी' निकलना। इससे कारण दूसरी ओर मुड़ जाता है: उत्सव के दिन चेतावनी देने के लिए कोई सुननेवाला ही न होता।
