vana-bhramaṇa-kelibhir gurubhir ahni khinnīkṛtaḥ
vana-bhramaṇa-kelibhiḥbecause of the games of roaming about in the forest — that is what wore him out instrumental of cause, plural: the day's play is many separate keli, not oneक्योंकि वन में घूमने की क्रीड़ाओं ने — बहुवचन है, इसलिए दिन भर की एक ही क्रीड़ा नहीं, अनेक क्रीड़ाएँ
gurubhiḥand they were heavy ones — hard, strenuous play, not light amusement agrees with kelibhiḥ; guru here is 'weighty, taxing', not 'elder'जो भारी थीं, थका देने वाली — यह विशेषण 'केलिभिः' का है; यहाँ 'गुरु' का अर्थ बड़ा-बूढ़ा नहीं, अपितु भारी है
ahniall through the daytime locative of time, set against niśi 'at night' in L2 — the verse is built on that day/night contrastदिन में — और आगे पंक्ति में 'निशि' अर्थात् रात में आता है; इसी दिन-रात के भेद पर सारा श्लोक खड़ा है
khinnīkṛtaḥhe has been made tired out khinnī-kṛta: khinna, 'weary', turned into a verb — 'made weary'; passive participle, so the doer is the play itselfथका दिया गया है — 'खिन्न' अर्थात् थका हुआ, उसी को क्रिया बना दिया; कर्मवाच्य होने से थकाने वाली स्वयं वे क्रीड़ाएँ ही हैं
ahni — all day long; gurubhiḥ vana-bhramaṇa-kelibhiḥ — by the heavy games of roaming the forest; khinnīkṛtaḥ — he has been worn out
vana-bhramaṇa-kelibhiḥ — वन में घूमने की क्रीड़ाओं के कारण; gurubhiḥ — जो भारी और थका देने वाली थीं; ahni — दिन भर; khinnīkṛtaḥ — (वह) थका दिया गया है।
All day long he has been roaming the forest at play. And that play was heavy going, not light amusement. It has worn him out.
दिन भर वन में घूमने की क्रीड़ाएँ चलती रहीं। वे क्रीड़ाएँ हल्की नहीं थीं, भारी थीं। उन्हीं ने इन्हें थका डाला है। थकाने वाला कोई और नहीं, वही दिन भर का खेल है।
An udāharaṇa: the lead-in reads asya sakhyaṁ, yathā — 'his friendship, as follows.' So the whole verse is spoken in the voice of the friend just described, and it shows his friendship in action. The verse does not name the speaker; it names only the one he speaks to, Subala.
यह उदाहरण है। इसके पहले की सूचना है — 'अस्य सख्यं, यथा' अर्थात् 'इसकी मित्रता, जैसे कि यह'। इसलिए सारा श्लोक अभी-अभी वर्णित उसी सखा के मुख से कहा गया है और उसकी मित्रता को क्रिया रूप में दिखाता है। श्लोक बोलने वाले का नाम नहीं देता; केवल जिससे वह कह रहा है, उस सुबल का नाम आता है।

sukhaṁ svapitu naḥ suhṛd vraja-niśānta-madhye niśi |
sukhaṁcomfortably, with nothing to disturb him adverbial accusative going with svapituसुख से, चैन से — यह क्रिया के साथ जुड़ता है, 'स्वपितु' के साथ
svapitulet him sleep — the speaker is arranging it, not asking third-person imperative: 'let him sleep'; this is the main verb of the first halfवह सो जाए — यही पूर्वार्ध की मुख्य क्रिया है, प्रथम पुरुष की आज्ञा
naḥ suhṛtour friend, the one whose heart is good to us nominative, the subject of svapitu; naḥ is genitive plural — 'ours', shared, not 'mine'हम सबका प्रिय मित्र — यही 'स्वपितु' का कर्ता है; 'नः' सम्बन्ध बहुवचन है, इसलिए 'मेरा' नहीं, 'हम सबका', सबमें साझा
vraja-niśānta-madhyeinside the dwelling in Vraja locative of place; niśānta is literally 'night's end', and it is used for a house — Viśvanātha takes it here as vrajastha-mandira, 'a house standing in Vraja'व्रज के भवन के भीतर — 'निशान्त' का अक्षरार्थ तो रात का अन्त है, पर यह घर के अर्थ में रूढ़ है; विश्वनाथ इसे व्रज में स्थित मन्दिर अर्थात् भवन लेते हैं
niśinow that it is night locative of time, answering ahni in L1; note the play — niśānta ('night-end') sits right beside niśi ('at night')रात में — पहली पंक्ति के 'अह्नि' का उत्तर; ध्यान दें, 'निशान्त' अर्थात् रात का अन्त, और उसी के पास 'निशि' अर्थात् रात में
naḥ suhṛt — our friend; niśi — now that it is night; vraja-niśānta-madhye — inside the dwelling in Vraja; sukhaṁ svapitu — let him sleep comfortably
naḥ suhṛt — हम सबका प्यारा मित्र; niśi — रात में; vraja-niśānta-madhye — व्रज के भवन के भीतर; sukhaṁ — सुख से; svapitu — सो जाए।
So now, at night, let our friend sleep — and sleep in comfort — inside the house there in Vraja. Notice he says naḥ, 'ours': the friend belongs to the whole group, and the speaker is arranging his rest on everyone's behalf.
अब रात है। हम सबका प्यारा मित्र व्रज के भवन के भीतर सुख से सो जाए। यह किसी एक का मित्र नहीं, सबका साझा मित्र है।
niśānta is a homely word for a dwelling, though its parts say 'the end of night'. Rūpa sets it next to niśi, 'at night', so the line quietly rings the same syllable twice.
'निशान्त' घर के लिए घरेलू-सा शब्द है, यद्यपि उसके अवयव 'रात का अन्त' कहते हैं। रूप गोस्वामी ने उसी के पास 'निशि' अर्थात् रात में रख दिया, जिससे पंक्ति में वही ध्वनि दो बार धीरे-से बज उठती है।

ahaṁ śirasi mardanaṁ mṛdu karomi karṇe kathāṁ
ahaṁI — the speaker takes his own share of the work first the ahaṁ here is answered by tvam in L4: the two friends divide the taskमैं — आगे की पंक्ति के 'त्वम्' से इसका उत्तर मिलता है; दोनों मित्र काम बाँट लेते हैं
śirasion his head locative of place — where the massaging happensसिर पर — जहाँ मालिश हो रही है
mardanaṁa rubbing, a massage accusative, the object of karomi; mardana is the plain word for kneading with the handsमालिश — 'करोमि' का कर्म; 'मर्दन' हाथों से दबाने का सीधा-सादा शब्द है
mṛdugently, with a soft hand adverbial — the care is in this wordकोमलता से — सारा स्नेह इसी एक शब्द में है
karomiI am doing it — right now, as he lies down present tense, not imperative: the speaker is already at work while he instructs Subalaमैं कर रहा हूँ — आज्ञा नहीं, वर्तमान काल; अर्थात् सुबल को कहते-कहते वह स्वयं काम में लगा हुआ है
karṇeinto his ear locative; it does not belong to karomi but to visṛjan in L4 — Viśvanātha reads it that wayकान में — यह 'करोमि' से नहीं जुड़ता, आगे की पंक्ति के 'विसृजन्' से जुड़ता है; विश्वनाथ ऐसा ही पढ़ते हैं
kathāṁa story, quiet talk accusative, the object of visṛjan in L4; the sentence runs across the line-breakकथा को — यह भी आगे की पंक्ति के 'विसृजन्' का कर्म है; वाक्य पंक्ति की सीमा लाँघकर आगे चलता है
ahaṁ — I; śirasi — on his head; mṛdu mardanaṁ karomi — am giving a gentle massage; karṇe kathāṁ — and [as for] a story into his ear —
ahaṁ — मैं; śirasi — सिर पर; mṛdu — कोमलता से; mardanaṁ — मालिश; karomi — कर रहा हूँ; karṇe — कान में; kathāṁ — कथा को (आगे 'विसृजन्' के साथ)।
I am massaging his head, and doing it gently. Then the line turns to the other half of the job: a story, into his ear. The words karṇe kathāṁ start here but their verb comes in the next line.
मैं इसके सिर पर कोमलता से मालिश कर रहा हूँ। और कान में कथा — वह बात आगे की पंक्ति में पूरी होती है। बोलने वाला उपदेश देते-देते स्वयं सेवा में लगा है।
The division is exact: ahaṁ … karomi in this line, tvam … lālaya in the next. One friend takes the head, the other the legs, and the story runs in between.
बँटवारा ठीक-ठीक है — इस पंक्ति में 'अहं … करोमि', अगली में 'त्वम् … लालय'। एक मित्र सिर सँभालता है, दूसरा पैर, और बीच में कथा चलती रहती है।

tvamyou — this is Subala's share answers the ahaṁ of L3तू — पिछली पंक्ति के 'अहम्' का उत्तर
asyahis — the sleeping friend's genitive, holding together both karṇe of L3 and sakthinī here: his ear, his thighsइसके — यह सम्बन्ध पिछली पंक्ति के 'कर्णे' और यहाँ के 'सक्थिनी', दोनों को थामे हुए है; इसका कान, इसकी जाँघें
visṛjanletting the talk flow out, pouring it in present participle agreeing with tvam — a running action alongside the main command; vi-sṛj is 'to release, let go', so the story is let loose into the earछोड़ता हुआ, डालता हुआ — 'त्वम्' के साथ चलने वाला वर्तमान कृदन्त, मुख्य आज्ञा के साथ-साथ चलती हुई क्रिया; 'वि-सृज्' का अर्थ छोड़ना है, इसलिए कथा कान में छोड़ी जा रही है
alaṁplenty of it, to the full it can be taken with visṛjan ('pour in plenty of story') or with lālaya ('knead them well') — the word sits between the two and the verse does not decideखूब, भरपूर — इसे 'विसृजन्' के साथ ले सकते हैं (खूब कथा सुनाता हुआ) अथवा 'लालय' के साथ (भरपूर मालिश कर); शब्द दोनों के बीच में पड़ा है और श्लोक स्वयं निर्णय नहीं करता
subalaO Subalaहे सुबल!
sakthinīhis two thighs accusative dual, the object of lālaya; Viśvanātha spells it out as caraṇayor upari-bhāga-dvayam, 'the two upper parts of the legs'दोनों जाँघों को — 'लालय' का कर्म, द्विवचन; विश्वनाथ इसे खोलकर 'चरणयोः उपरिभागद्वयम्' अर्थात् दोनों पैरों के ऊपरी भाग कहते हैं
lālayawork them tenderly — knead them imperative of lālayati, 'to fondle, to caress a child'; Viśvanātha glosses it flatly as mardaya, 'massage', so the tenderness is in the word, the action is a rubलाड़ से सहला — 'लालयति' की आज्ञा, जो बच्चे को दुलारने के लिए आता है; विश्वनाथ इसका सीधा अर्थ 'मर्दय' अर्थात् मालिश कर बताते हैं, इसलिए स्नेह शब्द में है और क्रिया मालिश ही है
subala — O Subala; tvam — you; asya karṇe kathāṁ visṛjan (karṇe kathāṁ from L3) — pouring a story into his ear; alaṁ — plenty; sakthinī lālaya — knead his two thighs
subala — हे सुबल; tvam — तू; asya — इसके; karṇe (पूर्व पंक्ति से) kathāṁ visṛjan — कान में कथा छोड़ता हुआ; alaṁ — खूब; sakthinī — दोनों जाँघों को; lālaya — लाड़ से सहला।
And you, Subala — while you let a story flow into his ear, work his thighs well. Two hands on him at once: mine on his head, yours on his legs, and your voice in his ear so he drifts off. The little word alaṁ, 'plenty', can attach either way — pour in plenty of story, or knead them thoroughly. The verse leaves it hanging between the two.
हे सुबल! तू इसके कान में कथा डालता रह। और इसकी दोनों जाँघों को लाड़ से सहला। 'अलम्' खूब का अर्थ देता है — वह कथा के साथ भी लग सकता है और सहलाने के साथ भी; श्लोक इसे खुला छोड़ देता है।
lālaya is the verb used for petting and soothing a child. Choosing it, rather than a plain word for rubbing, is what makes this friendship rather than service.
'लालय' वही क्रिया है जो बच्चे को दुलारने और चुप कराने में आती है। रगड़ने का कोई साधारण शब्द न लेकर इसी को चुनना — यही इसे सेवा नहीं, मित्रता बना देता है।

An editorial notice, not an interpretation. It records that the verse is left uncommented in both commentaries, so nothing should be read into the silence.
यह सम्पादक की सूचना है, कोई अर्थ-निर्णय नहीं। इससे इतना ही जाना जाता है कि दोनों टीकाओं में यह श्लोक बिना व्याख्या के छोड़ दिया गया है, इसलिए इस मौन में कुछ पढ़ना नहीं चाहिए।

vraja-niśānta-madhye vrajastha-mandira-madhye, tasmāt he subala ! tvaṁ karṇe kathāṁ visṛjan sakthinī caraṇayor upari-bhāga-dvayaṁ lālaya mardaya ||
vraja-niśānta-madhyethe verse's words 'inside the vraja-niśānta' — he takes them up first because niśānta could mislead the lemma quoted from L2'व्रज-निशान्त-मध्ये' — यह पद दूसरी पंक्ति से उठाकर व्याख्या के लिए रखा गया है
vrajastha-mandira-madhyethey mean: inside a house that stands in Vraja the gloss settles niśānta as 'dwelling', not 'the end of night' — mandira is simply the buildingअर्थात् व्रज में स्थित भवन के भीतर — यह व्याख्या 'निशान्त' को घर के अर्थ में पक्का कर देती है, 'रात का अन्त' अर्थ में नहीं; 'मन्दिर' यहाँ सीधा भवन ही है
tasmāttherefore — because he has been worn out all day Viśvanātha supplies the connective the verse leaves unspoken, tying L1's tiredness to the instruction that followsइसलिए — जो जोड़ श्लोक ने अनकहा छोड़ दिया था, वह विश्वनाथ स्वयं जोड़ देते हैं, और पहली पंक्ति की थकान को आगे के आदेश से बाँध देते हैं
he subala !O Subalaहे सुबल!
tvaṁ karṇe kathāṁ visṛjanyou, pouring a story into his ear he pulls karṇe kathāṁ down from L3 and joins them to visṛjan in L4 — that is his reading of how the sentence runsतू कान में कथा छोड़ता हुआ — वे तीसरी पंक्ति के 'कर्णे' और 'कथाम्' को नीचे खींचकर चौथी पंक्ति के 'विसृजन्' से जोड़ देते हैं; वाक्य कैसे चलता है, यह उनका पाठ है
sakthinīthe word sakthinī — lemma quoted for glossing'सक्थिनी' — व्याख्या के लिए उठाया गया पद

lālayaand 'lālaya', caress — lemma quoted'लालय' — व्याख्या के लिए उठाया गया पद
mardayameans: knead them, massage them a plain synonym; it fixes the action as rubbing, and rules out reading lālaya as mere pettingअर्थात् मालिश कर — सीधा पर्याय; इससे क्रिया मलना-दबाना निश्चित हो जाती है और 'लालय' को केवल दुलारना समझने की गुंजाइश नहीं रहती
vraja-niśānta-madhye — 'inside the vraja-niśānta'; vrajastha-mandira-madhye — means inside a house standing in Vraja; tasmāt — therefore; he subala — O Subala; tvaṁ karṇe kathāṁ visṛjan — you, pouring a story into his ear; sakthinī — 'sakthinī'; caraṇayor upari-bhāga-dvayaṁ — the two upper parts of the legs; lālaya — 'lālaya'; mardaya — means knead them
Viśvanātha does three things. First he fixes vraja-niśānta: it is a house standing in Vraja — a dwelling, not the end of the night. Then he supplies the joint the verse leaves out, tasmāt, 'therefore': because the friend has been worn out all day, therefore this is what you should do. Then he settles two words: sakthinī is the two upper parts of the legs, the thighs; and lālaya means mardaya, knead. Along the way he shows how to construe the sentence — karṇe kathāṁ from the third line goes with visṛjan in the fourth, so Subala is doing both things at once, talking into the ear and working the legs.
