śveta-raktas tu pāṭalaḥ ity amaraḥ |
śveta-raktaḥwhite mixed with red — pinkश्वेत और लाल का मिला हुआ रंग
tuand — the kośa's own connecting particle, not an objectionऔर (कोश की पृथक् प्रविष्टि जोड़ते हुए)
pāṭalaḥis called pāṭala'पाटल' नाम पाता है
iti amaraḥso the Amara-kośa lays it downऐसा अमरकोश का कथन है
śveta-raktaḥ tu — white mixed with red; pāṭalaḥ — is called pāṭala; iti amaraḥ — so says the Amara-kośa.
śveta-raktaḥ tu — श्वेत-मिश्रित लाल तो; pāṭalaḥ — पाटल है; iti amaraḥ — ऐसा अमर कहते हैं
Viśvanātha opens with the same dictionary line: pāṭala means white blended with red, pink. He fixes the colour first and then, in the next sentence, builds the rest of the picture on it.
श्वेत-मिश्रित लाल रंग को 'पाटल' कहते हैं — यह अमरकोश का वचन है।
Why cited: cited from the Amara-kośa to fix pāṭala as pink; it is the peg for the 'tādṛśena paṭena', 'a cloth of that kind', in the sentence that follows.
क्यों उद्धृत: विश्वनाथ अमरकोश से यह वचन लाकर 'पाटल' को गुलाबी सिद्ध करते हैं; आगे के वाक्य में जो 'तादृशेन पटेन' — 'वैसे वस्त्र से' — कहा गया है, उसका आधार यही है।

tādṛśena paṭena — by a cloth of that kind, the pink one; lasad-aṅgaḥ — his limbs shine; śikhaṇḍena — by a peacock feather; śekharī — he wears a crest, kṛta-śiro-bhūṣaṇaḥ — that is, he has made it his head-ornament; ali-nibhām dyuti-maṇḍalīm dadhat — 'carrying a bee-dark ring of light'; iti anena — by this phrase; śyāma-varṇaḥ — his dark colour; dhvanitaḥ — is hinted at.
Viśvanātha now walks through the picture. The cloth is 'of that kind' — the pink just defined — and it is against that cloth that his limbs shine; so he reads the verse's compound as pink-cloth plus shining-limbs. śekharī he unpacks: he has made the peacock feather the ornament of his head. Then the sharp observation. The verse says he carries a bee-dark ring of light. It never says what colour he is. But a halo that dark can only come off a dark body — so his śyāma colour is suggested, dhvanita, not stated.
उसी गुलाबी वस्त्र से उसके अंग शोभित हैं। 'शेखरी' का अर्थ है — मोरपंख से जिसने सिर का आभूषण बना रखा है। और 'भ्रमर जैसी कान्ति का वलय धारण करता हुआ' — इस पद से उसका श्याम वर्ण ध्वनित होता है।
dhvani is a term from alaṅkāra-śāstra, poetics. At home it means the sense a verse gives you without saying it — the suggested meaning riding on top of the literal one. Here Viśvanātha uses it exactly so: the words state only the halo; the complexion arrives as the overtone.
'ध्वनि' अलंकारशास्त्र का पारिभाषिक शब्द है। वहाँ इसका अर्थ है वह अर्थ जो श्लोक बिना कहे दे देता है — शब्दार्थ के ऊपर चढ़ा हुआ व्यंग्य अर्थ। विश्वनाथ यहाँ इसे ठीक इसी अर्थ में प्रयुक्त करते हैं — शब्द केवल कान्ति-वलय कहते हैं; वर्ण की बात संकेत बनकर आती है।
