parethe next ones after them para here is 'the further / following one' in a list, not 'supreme'इसके बाद वाले, अर्थात् सूची में आगे आने वाले (यहाँ 'पर' का अर्थ 'श्रेष्ठ' नहीं, 'अगला' है)
suhṛdaḥ ca — the suhṛds, and; sakhāyaḥ ca — the sakhās, and; tathā pare priya-sakhāḥ — likewise the next ones, the priya-sakhās
Rūpa Gosvāmī begins to sort Kṛṣṇa's friends. First the suhṛds, the good-hearted ones. Then the sakhās, the friends as such. Then, next after them, the priya-sakhās, the dear friends. The list is not finished — one more kind comes in the next line.
suhṛd is literally 'good-hearted'; the word already leans toward a friend who wishes you well and looks after you, which is why this class turns out to be the protective, slightly older one.
'सुहृद्' का शब्दार्थ ही है 'अच्छे हृदयवाला'। शब्द में ही वह मित्र झलकता है जो भला चाहता है और देखभाल करता है — इसीलिए यही भेद आगे रक्षा करने वाला और कुछ बड़ी आयु का निकलता है।

priya-narma-vayasyāś cety uktā goṣṭhe catur-vidhāḥ ||
priya-narma-vayasyāḥthe priya-narma-vayasyas — age-mates with whom he shares his dearest joking and teasing — the fourth kindप्रियनर्मवयस्य — गूढ़ हास-परिहास में सम्मिलित समवयस्क मित्र

goṣṭhein the cowherd village, in Vraja locative of place: the classification is stated for the Vraja settingव्रज में — सप्तमी स्थान बताती है कि यह विभाजन गोकुल के प्रसंग में कहा गया है
catur-vidhāḥthey come in four kindsचार प्रकार के
priya-narma-vayasyāḥ ca iti — and the priya-narma-vayasyas, so ends the list; goṣṭhe — in the cowherd village; catur-vidhāḥ uktāḥ — they are said to be of four kinds
And fourth, the priya-narma-vayasyas — friends of his own age who share his most intimate fun. That closes the list. So in Vraja the friends are said to be of four kinds.
narma is playful joking; vayasya is one of the same age. So priya-narma-vayasya names the friend who is let into the private jokes — the innermost of the four.

vātsalya-gandhi-sakhyāṁ tu kiñcit te vayasādhikāḥ |
vātsalya-gandhi-sakhyāṁtheir friendship has a whiff of parental affection in it gandhi at the end of a compound means 'smelling faintly of, having just a trace of'; so the sakhya is not pure sakhya — vātsalya colours itजिनके सख्य में वात्सल्य की हल्की गन्ध है — समास के अन्त में 'गन्धि' का अर्थ है 'जिसमें उसकी थोड़ी-सी महक हो'; अतः यह सख्य शुद्ध सख्य नहीं, वात्सल्य से रँगा हुआ है
tubut — marking off this class from the other threeपरन्तु — अब इन चारों में से पहले भेद की बात अलग करके कही जाती है
vayasā adhikāḥare ahead of him in age — older instrumental vayasā tells you in what respect they are 'more': in yearsआयु से बड़े — तृतीया 'वयसा' बताती है कि वे किस बात में अधिक हैं, अर्थात् वर्षों में
te tu — but as for them; kiñcit vayasā adhikāḥ — they are somewhat older in age; vātsalya-gandhi-sakhyāṁ — their friendship carries a trace of parental affection
Now the suhṛds. They are a little older than Kṛṣṇa. So their friendship is not friendship pure and simple — it smells faintly of a parent's love. They befriend him and they also want to look after him.
This whole stanza answers the lead-in tatra suhṛdaḥ — 'among them, the suhṛds'. The age difference is what produces the vātsalya tinge, and the tinge is what produces the guarding described in the next line.

One friend calls out to another. 'Maṇḍalībhadra! You are running, waving that spotless blade of yours. Why?' The alarm has gone up and the armed friends are already moving.
This stanza illustrates the lead-in eṣāṁ sakhyam, yathā — 'their friendship, as follows' — that is, the sakhya of the suhṛds just listed in 3.3.21-23. Note the sound-play: maṇḍalāgram against maṇḍalībhadra, the weapon echoing the man's name. Viśvanātha takes maṇḍalāgra in quite another sense — see his gloss below.

mā kṛthāḥ is the standard prohibition: mā with the aorist, 'don't do it'. Two friends have been addressed so far; a third comes in the next line.

'That is a big thundercloud, rumbling. It is not a demon in the shape of a bull.' The whole scene is one friend talking the others down. And the joke of the verse sits in the sound: balī, 'mighty', is the very word that opens balīvarda, 'bull'. He says the mighty one — but not the bull-shaped one.
The mistake is easy to make: a dark mass roaring in from the direction of Govardhana looks and sounds like a charging bull. That the friends reach for sword, club and spear before checking is the point — this is what suhṛd-sakhya feels like from the inside.

Viśvanātha reads the running friend as shaking the ground, not a blade: maṇḍala-agra is the face of the earth-circle, that is, the soil of Vraja, and his running makes it tremble. Why is he running? To kill Ariṣṭāsura. And the second address: noble one, don't pick up that heavy club for the killing either.
This is where the verse turns on a word. maṇḍalāgra can be heard as the curved sword a guard brandishes, or, split as maṇḍala + agra, as the surface of the earth-circle. Viśvanātha takes the second: what is being shaken is Vraja itself, under the friend's pounding run. Both hearings leave the picture intact — armed friends charging out — but they put the shaking in different places.

kintu — but rather; ghaṭanā-āvalī megha-śreṇī — a banked-up mass, that is, a line of clouds; govardhane gacchati — is passing over Govardhana; na tu balīvarda-ākṛtiḥ ariṣṭāsuraḥ — and not Ariṣṭāsura in bull form
Viśvanātha names the thing they are all pointing at: a banked line of clouds moving over Govardhana. And he names the demon the verse only calls 'a demon' — Ariṣṭāsura, who comes in the form of a bull. So the alarm was a cloud all along.
