The lead-in reads tatra pura-sambandhinaḥ — "among them, the friends connected with the city": this line begins the roll-call of Kṛṣṇa's friends in the city (Dvārakā/Hastināpura) as opposed to the cowherd friends of Vraja.

An udāharaṇa of eṣāṁ sakhyam, "the friendship of these city friends", the class just defined in the previous line. Smelling the head (mūrdhany avaghrāṇam) is how an elder shows affection to someone younger.

Śrīdāmā and Draupadī are named in the list too. Jīva says they are not illustrated directly — they are picked up along with Bhīma and Arjuna, who stand in for the whole set.
upalakṣaṇa versus viśeṣaṇa. A viśeṣaṇa is part of what the thing is: "the blue lotus" — blueness stays with the lotus. An upalakṣaṇa only helps you find it: "the house with the crow on it" — the crow flies off and the house is still the house. Here Bhīma and Arjuna are the crow: naming them lets you locate Śrīdāmā and Draupadī in the same class of city friends, without the verse describing those two at all.
