Viśvanātha unfolds the whole verse with both readings held side by side. O Śrī Kṛṣṇa — you who are their very life, and on the water-layer the water itself — when you go off to a distant land, then in the row of lakes that are your servants, ringing Vraja on every side, the swans that are their very life-breaths, stricken with grief, no longer wish to live there. He names each pun in turn: jīvana as life/water, dāsa as the lakes, haṁsa as the life-breaths.
