Jīva reads the verse as pure suggestion (vyañjanā). To convey the burning of separation, the poet first hints that 'friend of the sun' and the like are only a semblance of a reason for heat; then hints that 'friend of the moon' is the outright opposite of a reason for heat. What is thereby suggested is this: separation, and separation alone, is so unconquerable that it turns even the lotus and the rest into instruments that scorch.
यहाँ ताप दिखाने के लिए — सूर्य का मित्र होना आदि दो हेतुओं का आभासमात्र होना व्यंजित करके, और 'विधु-सुहृत्' वाले उस हेतु का तो विरुद्ध होना व्यंजित करके — यह दिखाया गया है कि वियोग की ही ऐसी दुरन्तता है, जो कमल आदि को भी तारक-रूप में कर देती है।
Jīva's text here reads tārakatvena — literally 'as a tāraka, that which carries [one] across'. The argument he is building (tāpārtham, the sun-reasons as mere semblance, the moon-friend as contrary) points to the sense 'agent of burning'; the parallel Viśvanātha comment on this verse spells the same clause tāpakatvena. Decoded here as it stands.

Jīva notes a variant reading of the last line, 'taṁ smārayad dahati pāriṣadān munīndra'. There the participle 'smārayad' is neuter, so to make it agree with the different subjects one has to mentally shift its gender.
'तं स्मारयद् दहति पारिषदान् मुनीन्द्र' — इस पाठ में 'स्मारयद्' पर लिंग-विपरिणाम करना पड़ेगा।

In the other reading, 'taṁ smārayan muni-pate dahatīti sabhyān', the participle is masculine. Here, Jīva says, once you split the sandhi the sentence construes easily throughout — no gender-adjustment required.
किन्तु 'तं स्मारयन् मुनि-पते दहतीति सभ्यान्' — इस पाठ में सन्धि-विश्लेष कर देने से सर्वत्र अन्वय सुगम हो जाता है (लिंग बदलने की आवश्यकता नहीं)।

Viśvanātha voices the verse as Uddhava's lament, each item a concession paired with its reason. Let the lotus torment us — it recalls Kṛṣṇa's face and limbs, and after all it is the sun's friend. Let the ocean torment us too — it recalls his dark complexion, and after all it hides the submarine fire in its depths. But the blue lotus — how can reminding us of the Lord make it burn, when it is the friend of the utterly cool moon? The answer: separation is so unconquerable that it turns even the coolest things, the lotus and the rest, into agents of scorching. That, he says, is the point.
