The illustrative verse (udāharaṇa) set up by the lead-in 'asya rūpam, yathā—' ('his form, thus'). It paints the rūpa of Raktaka, held foremost among Vraja's followers in 3.2.45, and is spoken in a servant's own voice: 'I follow Raktaka.'

Take 'rakta-kaṇṭha' this way: 'rakta' means skilled in the art of rāga—music. So it names one whose throat is expert in song, and him [I follow]. Jīva and Mukunda thus read the 'red throat' as a master singer's throat.

'Kharvitā' means eclipsed. The great luster—'ruk,' that is, the sheen—of the hundred-jointed dūrvā grass is the thing eclipsed. By whom? By Raktaka's bodily glow. So the compound means: he by whom dūrvā's rich sheen is outdone.
